@@Fishtory Jake Broe is definitely not part of the Fish Fam. but maybe there’s some interesting fish in Ukraine 🇺🇦 that will be worth mentioning in your channel. I don’t know 🤷‍♂️. On Jake Broe’s channel I always say “Glory to the heroes of Ukraine 🇺🇦 & all who assist”. I do not watch Father fishing any more because like you I do not have enough time. I’d like to go on the shoal but just not enough time & now that I know the things he stands for I am vehemently opposed to his personal beliefs. Changing gears. Joe Blogs is another guy I really like to follow but again not in the Fish Fam. & I also follow a few channels with astrophysics & geology. When you said in one of your videos how much time you spend returning comments I was really impressed with your medical issues that you could go through so many comments & respond to any of them at all much less as many as you do so I am deeply honoured & appreciative of your priceless time to so kindly donate to better the lives of other people & their critters. I promise so as soon as I learn how to use the computer better I’ll figure out how to do the $2 a month thing. this would be my one and only monthly subscription to anything on the Internet because unfortunately the most I can afford to do for Ukraine is simply say what I say to Jake bro channel and this other guy called Artur’s Army. Problem with so many channels available is you simply have to pick one if that’s all the budget can afford so I’m glad you’re able to just keep it at $2 a month for as long as you too will let you. I know you will get too busy & will not have time to read such long texts & I’m really surprised you’re able to make it happen now so I’ll try my best to start their membership thing.

@@Fishtory Artur Rehi is a gentleman I like to follow. I have 11 siblings that are all half blood. I have no for blood siblings. I’ve always been a Democrat, but I’ve had relatives that we are Republicans & some strangler independent parties relatives as well. I do not have any openly racist or homophobic relatives thankfully. I do have relatives as part of the LGBYQ Community thankfully. Anyway fish & plants really do save lives my friend but even more so good people like you help others understand our Hobby are the ones who save lives. Problem is people keep talking & very quickly & we find ways to not be interested in their channels. I don’t see how that could ever happen with your channel though. As a social experiment (I have Asperger’s like Elon Musk but I don’t like Musk) I have a friend who is my only guy friend in Australia who is a gentleman that is exactly the opposite of me in every way. I try to learn from him to learn how to talk to people. I don’t like. The only thing we having common is we are 2 white men. That’s it. Nothing else. Anyway, keep up the good work. You Rock.

It's been part my fault too. Holidays and health issues. You know how that is. But glad to report that the 55 is coming along after 6 months of nursing it along. Started it in Aug. then 2 or 3 days later found FatherFish and the same day found www.youtube.com/@Fishtory Wish I had seen both before filling it, but it was a rush job all for a single orange Tetra my daughter brought home. Started with a sterile, gravel and sand bottom but it's beginning to get some stratification/detritus so the plants are kicking it. Everything seems to be coming into balance. No wonder Susswassertang spreads like a weed. I got it accidentally and now I need to control it, otherwise every tank has it all over the bottom and hardscape. However I agree, it can look great, esp. when it anchors to wood or rocks. SAE ate all my Java Moss, so Susswassertang kinda replaced moss in that tank (there's also Anubias, Bucephalandra, Boulbitis and 3 types of Java fern). So I keep half the list in my aquarium: I have 10 (V. giant and V. mini), 7 Ludwigia repens, palustris, few related species to 6 (mostly Crypt. xWillisi), 2 (Taxiphylum), 1 Susswassertang. 8. Lotus lily is rarely on stock, similar with other species, 4 pennywart - maybe I will try it, now I keep related Hydrocotyle Japan which is related, but it's hanging by a thread, 5 Probably Egeria Najans, which I never kept. Related Egeria Densa never lasts in my tanks for some reason. Bummer, I heard breweries used to keep Egeria Najans aka "Canadian water plague" in their water-supply ponds to soften and clear the water. I didn't even try 9, 3, but seeing them on the video makes me want to add them to my tanks. :-)

I love it "....Guppy grass, it's so easy it's a little scary.." 😆 I do have to add though water pH isn't always a co-current function of hardness, it is in most cases, but, there are exceptions. Especially if your bedrock is a non alkaline earth metal like Gypsum or other Sulfate bonded Calcium and Magnesium compounds, you can have relatively slightly acidic waters that have a general hardness (GH) up into the 6 to 10 range. These are what most people are shooting for with Crystal Bee Caridinia shrimp tank water, because of their weird native water conditions. Plants also do better with some Ca and Mg in Sulfate form, a General Hardness of 4 to 7 is fine for most aquatic plants.

I had a beautiful val species that got bronze to red tips under high light. I can't remember what it was now and I really want it again. I've had the best results with vals in harder, more alkaline water. It melted in my low pH tanks. They also require moderate to high lighting but they don't need ferts in water column or CO2 as long as you have a rich substrate (eg soil or aquasoil or similar). In the wild they grow in pretty much full sun in rivers etc, they root strongly and like a bit of current. Also unlike most aquarium plants these are actually true aquatic plants that grow submerged in the wild (most aquarium plants are marginal plants that can tolerate being submerged, vals only grow underwater). I read that they can use carbonates from the water in place of CO2 but I don't know if that's true or not. I've grown them both with and without Co2 and not noticed much of a difference in growth so I'm inclined to believe it.

To get rid of my hair algae i reduced my light time abit and stopped using liquid fertiliser. I added some root tabs just to help the planted in sand plants. My Hair Algae stopped frowing back when i removed it. Do i need to strat using my All in one Liquid vertiliser again. Will my plants suffer. I have a seperate tank for a musk turtle with the same Fluval 3.0 light and i dont put anything in that tank. I dont even trim plants. The plants are really green and are doing well without anything. Any reason vallisneria grow’s low to the ground ? Mine spreading but some have been growing for weeks but not tall but leafs are long. I adjusted my light after reading 2hr aquarist site on lighting a few days ago hoping that helps built my hygger light around red and blue light and only 20% white and neutral green light on average 20% less than blue and red.
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 11 ай бұрын
So it could be the dwarf form perhaps... or nutrients (root tabs will show you it's true potential. ) then light works in a bell curve ... low light causes the plant to stretch to reach light, but it won't spread... medium light will make it tall , too much light and it grows deeper in color, denser and wider.
@Calebsfish23
@Calebsfish23 11 ай бұрын
@@Fishtory its definitely not dwarf i believe it gigantea version. It has really wide blade of grass the mother plants where very tall and there like 5 of there sprouts. But they staying low with very healthy blades. The mother plants I believe are melting away and will regrow as i have only had them a couple months. My Amazon sword is doing amazing same with duckweed. I have nearly cleared out all the duckweed. I have used pond advertised fertilizer. Its crystal clear thrive in Amazon has like 10% nitrogen and bunch of other stuff. It is ammonium based but haven’t seen any ill effects. I do keep limestone in the tank to ensure there plenty of minerals. I have deep substrate similar to father fish but my own style. Also using hygger 999 lighting for 75 gallon tank. My newest setup since the paper i read is now 20% white 100% red 100% blue 80% green for 8 hours a day while the other 4 hours is slowly brought up from 50% and white is consistent the whole day.

If these plants feed from the water column and use roots as anchors, is there any reason to not think all underwater plants are like this? Would it be better to just go full sand and pebble for anchoring and feed through the water? Has to be studies on this. I know dirt/aquasoil tanks do well, but could it just be due to leeching from the soil into the water column?
@evergreenpsyche
@evergreenpsyche 11 ай бұрын
Most plants will do both, but many plants are objectively known to be primarily root feeders that will not absorb much nutrient content out of the water column. Alex mentions this in a few videos but you can do your own experiments if not convinced....one that comes to mind is any Cryptocorine, might survive plain sand but needs a rich soil to thrive
@Fishtory

So almost all aquatic plants do feed from the water collumn but anywhere from 4 to 200x slower and less efficiently than the roots. This is precisely why hydroponics works...just using extremely rich nutrients in circulated water on roots of terrestrial plants

Most crypts definitely need stability...they die if moved and or melt. There are a handful of tough ones that propagate via fractional tissue transfer....(daughter plants breaking off and not seeds or flowering). Those are the water column feeders including the 3 i mentioned in this video, however most others need nutrients... crypt nurii, balansea, spiralis, and wendeti all come to mind as wanting to stay put in substrates

@@Fishtory you are such a gold mine of knowledge 😸 I have a wendeti in a dirted tank that I planted in an unfortunate corner location...I've been wanting to move it but afraid of killing it like you mentioned

I see this in our lakes, can I bring some home for my tank? Or is that a bad idea?

Its fine 🙂 i recommend that you keep a bucket with tap water for a day or two in between, just to make sure no snail eggs or other pests. But indeed they're just free plants

Hi can you tell me if there are male and female banana plants if so how to tell and how to get more plants?
@Fishtory
@Fishtory 10 ай бұрын
They can all reproduce both via plantletes...the bananas spliting up, or flowering at the surface and seeds falling back into the water

Guppy grass is a weed. It's hard to get rid of once you have it in your tank. The upside I got a record 70-80 babies per guppy when I put them in a tank overgrown with Guppy grass (I used to get overexcited and count babies back in the day 😂)

@@Fishtory The drawback is that the mothers are so exhausted from birthing babies that if they are not able to eat some of them, they can die from it. It could also have been a coincidence that I lost 3 mothers like that (almost back to back) 🤷🏾‍♂️

I have killed just about all of these at one time or another. I have well water with 0 gh and 0 kh and until I learned to add stuff to my water and to not change 50 percent of the water a week, I killed a lot of plants. I just got a tds meter and my water from the well reads 16.
