Yes, I have made one of the mistakes you mentioned. My husband built me a new garden with multiple raised beds and a fence around it last year (thank you Hubby). We bought premium soil which included mushroom compost and manure. As we were shoveling the soil into the new beds, you could still see (and smell) the manure. Well, I was so excited about the new garden that I immediately planted. Hmmm, did I wait for the soil to cure? Of course not! My radishes were just leaves, with no radishes. My beets had the same problem, all leaves, no beets. So, I pulled them out and just kept re-seeding. Eventually I got results. But it did take about 4 -5 months. I wish I saw your video back then. Oh, and the soil is great...now

I made the mistake of planting collard greens in Florida during the spring hoping to nurse them through summer. They grew just fine...very well in fact and I got several harvests from them, however...it was a daily battle with cabbage moths. I literally had to use BT on my plants daily just to get leaves with only a "few" holes in them. By mid June I gave up and pulled them out. It just wasn't worth the trouble. Now I grow Malabar spinach and amaranth for summer greens. I'll save the brassicas for fall and winter. I hope this might help someone out there. This was a good video.....Thanks :)

great tips! I think my mistake was planting vegetables out of season, growing cauliflower and broccoli in the middle of July when it was too hot. Also, I didn't prepare the soil ahead of time, I just dug up some rows of grass in my backyard lawn and planted vegetables. A lot of weeds grew around my vegetables. I didn't know i needed to clear the whole yard of grass and weeds first, and fertilize the soil. I grew bell peppers, cauliflower, broccoli, romain lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers. I think I also waited too long to harvest, the squirrels ate a lot of my tomatoes and peppers. Thanks for the tips!

In the last 3 year since I moved in next door to my parents to help them with their small farm either myself or my Dad have committed most of these mistakes. I was not of aware of the too much nitrogen issue with root crops until now. But he makes a very rich soil mix for all the raised beds and this very well may be the issue. Our green beans are not producing and I had read that could be their issue as well. Thanks for this informative video. Back to the old drawing board.

It's a little out of season for some, but we have a longer growing season here in Texas. I did stay away from planting the cool weather veggies though, and stuck to those that needed warm soil and temps to germinate.

For pests I have dealt with... mostly earwigs and slugs. I use food grade Diatomaceous Earth for the earwigs and for slugs I have used a combo of egg shells, coffee grounds and Sluggo. Also I have a large supply of Rosemary and I will place clippings of Rosemary around my edible plants. It works, but you have to remove the clippings in a day or so to avoid fungal issues. I have Neem Oil for most other creatures that want to eat my plants.

when I plant my tomatoes I make the hole deeper and add 2 cups of Azomite (rock dust has 76-78 elements), 2 cups peat moss, 1/2-1 cup oyster shell for chickens ( it is crushed/sterilized/and pelleted, breaks down easly), 3-4 rounded tablespoons of Epsom Salts, dried kelp, and 1/4 cup bone meal, and 2 TBS of Miracle Grow, mix well and cover with 1" soil (so tomato grows into nutrients) plant tomatoes and water well with a weak solution of Miracle Grow 2 TBS to 5 gal of water. You know when the plant has grown into the mix you covered with dirt, they grow fast and get dark green, and start producing fruit. You can see the plant change reaching the burried treasure trove of nutrients everything they need to thrive well.

Good advice. Mine is (which I learned the hard way) is ALWAYS READ AND FOLLOW THE PRODUCT INSTRUCTIONS. If you're using any product whose name ends in "-cide" this should go without saying, but this also applies to feeding your plants as well. Too much fertilizer can do more harm than not feeding your plants at all.

When I lived in the SoCal desert, I once grew a cauliflower from seed. Planted in early spring and grew into a big healthy plant. I did have to spray it for caterpillars but otherwise it did amazingly well in the summer heat that averaged 120 degrees every day. It even headed well, but the mice got to the heads before I did. :( Even stranger, it survived the winter (and we got below zero there) and greened up in the spring. However it attracted mice so eventually I pulled it up. And that's when I discovered it had big thick roots like cables, some were over 15 feet long. The entire plant is edible and all tastes the same, and the roots have nodules that look and taste just like the part you normally eat!

Compost and organic material is very good for the efficiency of nutrients being available for the plants,it makes soil better, by increasing its cation exchange capacity, and mechanic composition , but on longs terms of using the soil year after year it will wither of the basic nutrients, so synthetic fertilizer become a necessity either way..

Started a lot of tomatoes by seed this year (wanted a lot of color varieties and especially wanted to try the lemon drop heirloom that won many awards. Thing is, I got a late start. So, to prevent further delay, I made sure to fill a kiddie pool with water overnight so I didn't have to use the cold chlorinated water out of the tap. Our tap water is very cold (around 50 degrees, deep well water from municipality) and I am sure it would have shocked and slowed the growth of starter seeds if I had used the cold water. By using the pool, the water warmed in the sun and was non-shock and no longer contained chlorine when I watered. I used this for much of my watering. I then stuck my 2 gallon watering jug in the pool (which it filled quickly) and watered all my plants this way for most of the first 2 months. As the garden got big and demanded more water, I balanced using the pool and use of tap water from the hose on those plants less impacted by temperatures. I think this non-shock water made a big difference for catching up with my tomatoes over the first 6 weeks and I would highly recommend it.

I didn't feed my plants after 3 months so they just sort of become week and leaves burn or the plants starts to shut down and stops producing fruit....its important to prepare the soil as well but if the plants take all the nutrients from the soil to get halfway to growing point and you still have the rest of the growing phase to go to fruit or produce vegetables then you need to feed you plants some sort of fertilizer or add more fertilizer slurry so they can complete their growing cycle....I saw one cool method of placing a plastic coke bottle with a large opening cut and holes throughout the bottle into the center of the plants and putting compost in the center so when you watered the plant you watered the nutrients breaking down along with some nutrient rich dirt and fed your plants to its complete growing cycle...you lose some space but you gain rich healthy plants that way....there is a woman on u tube from India who showed this method along with adding worms for worm castings in the rich moist soil she was producing for her plants....thanks for sharing.....i ve made all of these mistakes...hoping to avoid them this year....I ve been trying to grow plants successfully ever since a bean died in kindergarten and I was devastated I killed my plant....think the bean was a dud one of my mean brothers played a mean trick on me...or my witch guardian but either way...I have successfully grown green beans and tomatoes and peas so I know I can do it if I pay attention and put in some effort.....thanks again for sharing ..its a reminder of what I have to do before summer...prepare my beds....prepare some sort of phosphate oil mixture for aphids...and put beer in the garden for the slugs....ty

This is my first time and here's what I'd say..Start planting seeds indoors at the end of your winter months. Pick a pack of seeds. Start with one kind of vegetable and do as much research on that one as possible. Get a peat pellet mini greenhouse made by Jiffy and follow instructions on the package (especially watering directions) you can get one from a local Walmart for $5-10 depending on size. There's a guy on youtube named Gary Pilarchik ? that will show you how to build an inexpensive grow light out of pvc pipes. So that's how you start seedlings. After about 1-2 months, the seedlings will need to be transplanted into larger containers. Buy a bag of potting soil, a stack of plastic cups from a dollar store, and I also get some disposable baking pans from the dollar store (like lasagna pans made of silver foil looking material). I use an electric drill to put holes in the bottoms of my cups for drainage, but you could use a nail or scissors or even a cigarette..whatever works..to put drainage holes. Put a little soil in the bottom of the cup and up the sides. Remove the mesh from the peat pellet and put the plant in the cup and add soil until it's covered. After you have several plants in cups, put the cups in the disposable baking pan. Put water in the baking pan--enough to cover bottom--that way the cups are sitting in there and you're watering from the bottom. Keep using your grow light until you have 70 degree days and 50 degree nights. If you're having warm days, but cold nights, bring your plants inside at night. After you have a little plot of land tilled or a raised bed ready, and your plants are getting bigger with sturdy stems and the roots are getting tight in the cups, and it's warm enough outside...plant them in your garden. (You'll have to do research on soil nutrients to add for your particular plant, maintenance tips, insect and disease remedies etc..but generally that's all you need to do) May look complicated by how much I've written, but it's very easy and rather inexpensive. Happy growing!

I have a hard time with pests, caterpillars were chewing through my young runner bean leaves so i had to re-plant . I have started using neem oil thanks to your video so i am hoping that will help out. I've had just about every situation except for seed sources. I get most of my seeds from Johnnys Selected Seeds in Maine via mail. I especially like their pelleted seeds for things like carrots and parsnips or other very small seeds. Two serious problems I have in particular are gophers and powdery mildew. I have to grow just about everything in wire baskets or with underground wire sheets to prevent damage. I do use a chemical for powdery mildew control on peas, beans and cucubits. Aphids, as mentioned are a serious issue and as suggested spray with insecticidal soap as soon as they appear. If you see ants in the leaves there are definitely aphids there as well. The items selected are pretty common and I've been guilty of just about every one.

Shawnakay Hasphall if you have the fast food taco bell and buy a cup with the domed lid it is just right to start garlic

root knot nematodes in south fl also found their way into purchased soil, in pots. $250.00 in dirt- makes me want to quit. and cannot make my own hot compost without them.

Great video!! "liked" all your videos!! I'm in California as well and would like to make a request if you do a video of what plants are rodents "resistant". There are a lot of rodents in this warm weather and most of us have small gardens, planting food so near the house attract all the rodents in the area and would love to know if you can share any variety of plants that "they" do not like as much....

I know I overcrowded my kale seeds last year - tried to put 100+ seeds in a 6 foot section, plus the seeds from several other packets in their own sections. Also, do not mulch seeds right away - that killed 2 of the sections, although, the fact that I kept lifting the mulch up to check underneath probably didn't help.

My pepper plants were yellow and started dropping leaves. I stopped watering and applied a foliar spray of Epsom salt. They are looking a lot better now.

Overwatering is also a common mistake most people do.

Here in Georgia, zone 8...Temps got so hot so fast I could not keep garden watered sufficiently. Did you do a video while back on irrigating raised garden beds? Also early Spring rains ruined my bush lima beans that got some kind of rust on leaves and plant did not produce at all. Just some problems in zone 8

I agree. Here in North Mississippi the extended early rains followed by our sudden high humidity has really made even our raised beds quiet challenging. hang in there "Georgia"! Have a great day. Lord bless!
