Indeed, most big banks have very similar good benefits, even for part-time employees. Probably because the need for in-person staff is becoming less and less as banking technology advances.

I am a mail carrier. Part time employees will likely work 60 hours or more a week You will not have access to TSP. You will work Sundays. You will work holidays. Part time employee just means you are gauranteed a minimum number of hours. You will have to pay the full premium for health benefits. Usps pays nothing. Usps is not a good fit for barista fire.

thank you Jason for educating me on this, I was very mistaken in my thinking that USPS was good for Barista FIRE. My research on the internet said that part time employees get benefits, but your firsthand experience is much more valuable.

Part time flex(ptf) are career employees with access to TSP, paid holidays, etc. They are gauranteed a minimum of 6 hours per day. Nearly every ptf works like a dog though. Ptf's are almost never hired off of the street. Usually they are hired as a city carrier assistants then 'converted' to career status after a year or two. Needless to say I could go on and on with details but it's probably not nessesary. You will work a ton no matter what. Thanks for responding! :)

I work in Healthcare (not a nurse) and can go PRN (on demand) but most medical employers give no benefits for PRN employees. These are very high stress jobs, and that is why there is so much demand and high pay for them. I plan to go PRN 2 days a week later this year because the stress has become too much to keep it up. I can live 'Barista FI/RE" from now to retirement.

I am an experienced RN in the SF Bay Area. Great pay but because I’m Per Diem I don’t get health care. I only need to schedule myself 1shift /week but I often work more than that when my co-workers need time off and ask me to fill in for them. It can be very stressful but it’s very doable because as it’s only 1 or 2 shifts / week. I am able to pay into a 401k and my employer matches some of it.

Work for the government. Part time employees get benefits most of the time and it's usually desk work. You can find positions that are strictly remote too. Set hours and great benefits.

Hmm, I think that most Barista FIRE jobs are going to be easier to qualify for even if your background is technical. I think it would be impressive to potential employers in the first place to have such a skilled worker, Just be honest and make a good looking resume I would say! :)

@@CeciliaMarieAngela They probably get a lot of applications and you might have to tweak your resume to fit the individual job posting more since they probably have an algorithm that automatically delete resumes that don't match up well.

Yeah I agree. My girlfriend's mom has worked at USPS as a temp fed employee. It sounded like a really toxic work environment, at least at her post office

I have a friend who has worked for USPS for years. Says it pays well, lots of overtime opportunities (triple pay!), and great benefits including retirement. Says it's a good place to work, though am sure that's more to do with supervision and the team.

Absolutely, but I don't think it has broad appeal to most people? Especially in FI because even in the reserves you have obligations that limit your flexibility since you still have to sign a contract for I think (6?) years active reserve and (2?) years inactive reserve.

OnCashFlow Enlisted contracts are 2, 4, or 6 years (regardless of selected or inactive status). But Selected Reserve is the only way to get the great Tricare coverage. Being in the Reserves has been the most flexible part time job I’ve ever had. Of course there are obligations, but I don’t find them limiting. Speaks directly to your points on connection to colleagues and contribution to a higher cause (mission).
