Lord Byron; being a champion only begins with winning. Unequaled legend.

For those who wonder why, he couldn't serve in the service because of a serious blood disorder/ perhaps hemophilia. I met him at Ridgewood CC when Trevino won the Senior Open... what a gentle man.

One of golf's all-time greats and gentlemen, Lord Byron won eighteen tournaments, including eleven in a row, in 1945; a record that will surely never be beaten. It took fifty years and a fellow named Tiger Woods to have a lower scoring average than the 68.33 Byron averaged that magical year. He kept his clubface square longer than any other player with the exception of Moe Norman, a key to his wonderful ball striking.

John, are you aware of any Byron Nelson biographies? I've know the basics but looked to no avail and would love to read his full story.

Actually, now that you mention it, Mark, I haven't read any biographies on Byron. I'll have to do some checking. It would really be quite surprising if there weren't. He was certainly a fascinating man. Apparently, one of the reasons he retired quite early, other than having made enough to buy his ranch, was that he suffered quite badly from nerves when he played. Actually, so did Bobby Jones. That year of golf, Byron played in '45, has to rank right up there with Bobby Jones' Grand Slam, don't you think?

Definitely. He was still young when he retired too and his record against Hogan was tremendous. Would have been interesting to see how Hogan's career panned out if Lord Byron had carried on playing.

That's true. Byron often got the better of Hogan when they played together.

+John Haynes The most notable example being the 1942 Masters, the last before the event was suspended for three years for World War II. After Nelson and Hogan were tied after 72 holes, Nelson defeated Hogan in an 18-hole playoff to earn his second Masters title, joining Horton Smith, the first Masters champion, as only the second multiple Masters champion. It would be nine long years (six Masters Tournaments) before Hogan would win at Augusta.

I follow golf moderately and this is literary the first time I remember hearing of him. Wonder why he's not talked about more, or maybe I've just been under a rock?

This was clearly a professionally done video, with a professional narrator who probably went to College. Not to mention countless editors and writers that were involved with this video, who also went to college. He called Byron Nelson an ex golfer. That is so wrong and disrespectful. The term is former not ex. Ex is to cross out ei ex con or ex wife or is a cop has been fired or a soldier dishonorably discharged. Former as an adjective mean previous. Some m my any people get this wrong and is sad.
