I remember watching one event (I think it was either Rio or the 2019 one) where a gymnast was the last option for her team to at least win bronze and she ended up falling near the end of her routine. I can't imagine the pressure she must have felt and it sadly must have gotten to her. ):

A lot of the gymnasts are very young and put a lot of pressure on themselves. I felt so sorry for the Romanian gymnast who was crying because of her fall. You not only have to have excellent skills but a very strong mindset. I don’t think it’s easy and am surprised at those who consistently dominated like Simone (even while being sexually assaulted!) and others but, eventually, it takes it’s toll.😢

Gymnasts are taught on how to fall safely just like what Nastia did. Spotters are only there incase the fall is too dangerous(head first,side ways etc.)
@nell__byte3 жыл бұрын
What Mark said. At that level of competition gymnasts know how to fall safely. The spotter is there in case the gymnast has a particularly scary fall, to keep them from injuring themselves in any life or career-threatening way. There've also been times when the uneven bars themselves collapse, though that's thankfully fairly rare. Spotters are there for those cases too to ensure that the collapsing bars don't kill the gymnast who's on them.

Sacramone's 1.7 deductions (2 falls, 0.8 each at 05-08 CoP and the 0.1 OOB on floor) still were not enough to reach the difference between USA and China (CHN 188,900 - USA 186,525 = 2,375). Even without Nastia's and Shawn's OOB on floor, the USA WAG Team wouldn't beat China's WAG Team. Mustafina would not win the silver medal even without the beam fall. The difference between her and Komova was 2.407 (Mustafina's fall costs a full point). And Raisman lost the bronze medal when she took off the first pass connection on floor (only a double arabian without the punch straight front). THIS cost her the podium. Iordache never would be the first qualified on UB finals in 2015. Her final UB score in qualifications was 13.200. Without the fall would be 14.200, and the last reserve spot (Noemi Makra - HUN) got a 14.233 final score. The last full qualified was Shang Chunsong (CHN) with a way higher 14.666.

I came to say the same thing! If they took 0.8p for Aly's beam grab and 1p for Aliya's fall, then say that didn't happen, they'd end up with AA scores of 60.366 for Aly (4th place), a 60.566 for Aliya (bronze), both still not near Viktoria's silver 61.973 or Gabby's golden 62.232. So the battle of the bronze was close anyway, but the battle of the silver wasn't and if both didn't fall the outcome would still be the same. Sometimes it’s safer to try and catch the gymnasts, sometimes it’s safer to let them fall. In the case of Nastia Liukin, it was safer to let her fall. She was going to fall flat on her body which was very safe, would not likely lead to injury. But if a gymnast was falling in a dangerous way, the coach would step in and try to reorient her. I hope this helps :)

@tony braxter I don't disagree with you, the math speaks for itself, but I think it's fair to point out that Alicia's falls might've somewhat affected Nastia and Shawn's performances, which took place after. That's when we saw those mistakes that contributed to their loss of the gold medal in the end - like Nastia stepping out of bounds, which was interesting given she had had an amazing and high scoring bars performance earlier on. I think each athlete is responsible for their own performances, mind you, I'm not actually blaming Alicia here - just wondering how Nastia and Shawn would've performed had Alicia not had such huge deductions and gold hadn't basically slipped through their fingers already. But we'll never know.
