The video is about “visible” tornadoes, inside the store it was not seen only heard. It is one of the scariest I agree with
@ClefairyRox4 ай бұрын
Probably because that footage doesn't show the tornado, or much of anything, for that matter, because it's so dark. While I agree that footage is haunting, it's memorable for the audio, not the visuals like with these videos. That said, I'd say the fact that you can't see anything is what makes that video so scary. You're forced to visualize what's happening based on the audio, and the things your mind makes up are always much scarier than seeing something in person.

@@slipknottin That very video is what gave the Tornado an F5 rating. Surveyors initially rated the damage as high end F4 thinking that the tornado likely lingered or slowly moved over the area, which to be fair it did circle back on itself in that spot, but once the video surfaced it was undeniable. After Canada adopted the EF scale they said it was enough for the Tornado to have been rated an EF5. Truly a wild event!

For the overpass thing, it's not about girders or not, it's about the venturi effect. Forcing wind into a confined spot only strengthens the wind and makes wind tunnels, the girders may have been passable for that f2, but 300 mph winds forced into an overpass is a whole different story.
@knurlgnar245 ай бұрын
Boundary effects far outweigh the venturi effect. Wind speeds at the edge where there are girders offering resistance will result in much lower wind speeds. Like he said it's all about whether you have something solid between you and the wind. A bridge truss is excellent cover. Modern pre-stressed concrete designs don't offer you much.

I've read that the tornado in the overpass video actually ended up missing the overpass entirely. You can kind of see it move off to the left in the video. All that wind screaming through is the inflow into the tornado, which I would say makes it even scarier because that video doesn't actually show the full force of the tornadic winds.

Regarding honorable mentions, I'd have included that footage at Dallas in 1957 (The clip with the big pieces of debris) and a suburban shot of the 1987 Edmonton tornado. When asked by a child what he's looking at, the cameraman at Edmonton replies "That's a cloud. That's a funnel cloud." Just as chill as you please. Superb video! My favorite clip got the first slot!

We frequently bounced between KAKE and KSN for live weather coverage. The McConnell AFB footage. That was a terrifying season, and what’s more, over the next few years, nearly all the same places had been hit again. The same poor boat shop in Goddard got hit twice in a few years. Doppler radar was a new thing and if you couldn’t tune in to tv. You listened to the trained spotter coverage on KFDI. The 90’s was a wild decade to grow up and witness it all. Not to mention all of the science and technology to come. Footage and knowledge of what these places looked like before and after the storms is something I’ll never forget. I request that you cover the Elkhorn tornado on April 26 2024. Although it happened a few hours ago and I would like to know about it when the information comes out. It was part of a small outbreak in the plains on April 26 2024, hitting Omaha, Council bluffs, and many more places.

If anyone wants to see an absolutely crazy tornado video that is one of my favorites, type in “Rochelle Tornado Car” in KZbin and the name of the video is something along the lines of “risk taker almost swept up by the tornado in Rochelle, IL”. That guy got crazy lucky

Im not sure if he recorded the video or just took a photo, but the Natural Disaster Survey Report written by the United States National Weather Service has a photo from seemingly the same or very similar angle and credit Airmen 1st Class Daniel L. Studebaker

"Get up under the girders!" drives me insane. I mean, yes the bridges in my town have them, a friend slept between them when he was homeless. But most bridges do not have them and you're more than likely to get killed by debris if you run under an overpass. You're safer lying face down in the ditch covering the back of your head with your hands.

Wife walks into the room and asks, "who's that guy with the hair?" (referring to Swegle). She received a blank stare from me and she just left the room. Will file for divorce in the morning.

Wow, your shirt changed color! Using Google Earth and going to the address mentioned in Kirkland, Ill and using the date shifter, if you go to 4/2015 you can see a lot more of the destruction and the scouring path into town!

Can't believe the video of the guy on the road nonchalantly reversing his car to make way for the passing tornado, didn't make your list. It's unbelievable footage of a tornado up close from a guy who seems completely unfamiliar with tornadoes and also has some great quotes from him: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpq2Y4l9itx4o5o

The Sam Smith footage of Fairdale Tornado on this list should be an honourable mention. I've watched a lot of tornado footage and my stomach leaps out of my throat watching it every time. Crazy how the same tornado made two horrifying videos.

Great list! For me, I would have included: - Duke Evans' footage of Andover at or near the top, as the insane ground motion and black wedge of death over the suburban homes was the truest stuff of nightmares for me growing up - The 'angry octopus' footage of the 2011 El Reno (the real El Reno EF5, much scarier than the 2013 one), which is the most violent motion I've still ever seen in a tornado video, plus the storm chasers nearly die - RODALCO2007's footage in Joplin, which is not the most iconic or horrific from Joplin (see my next one), but is the creepiest as they are filming all along Rangeline Road as the monster approaches, without realizing the exact locations they are at will soon be annihilated with tons of tragic deaths - Jeff Piotrowski's footage of Joplin, which is horrifying in every single way, and he didn't even release the worst of it, thankfully - Reed Timmer's footage of the Philadelphia, MS EF5 from the 2011 Super Outbreak; crazy motion, insane speed, unbelievable footage from an unbelievable day - the Elie F5 footage, super narrow, but insanely powerful and slow moving clear on camera - Jason Rosolowski's parking lot footage of Tuscaloosa, just incredible that he captured it so close with all its vortices...scary - the Jarrell video, because it is Jarrell

I still think the greatest and most terrifying tornado video of all time is Fritch, Texas (Video 2) 1992, EF4, where the guy is right inside it (his house is struck by lightning and he's knocked out for a few seconds), and he keeps filming as the neighborhood is obliterated by multiple vortices all around him. One that gets wrongly overlooked in my opinion.

In a one year period in 2022/23 I heard two tornadoes touch down here in central Louisiana less than 2 miles away. One was just after 2am a full 2 minutes before NOAA issued the warning but it was obvious to me what I was hearing. Thankfully both were in uninhabited areas...a swamp and a pine forest. It`s a terrible sound to hear when you live in a camper and get awakened by thunder after midnight then check the weather to find out dangerous storms are moving through with possible high winds, hail, constant lightning, and tornadoes. A lightning strike killed 4 trees 30 feet from my only shelter...a 3ft diameter flooded drainage culvert 130 feet up the driveway from my camper. Power was out from 3am until midnight the next night because of high winds.

Very good list, I do think that there is one more video that could've potentially been in the top 10 (if not mentioned, at the very least). That video being of the Joplin tornado from 2011, where a bunch of strangers were gathered in a gas station and you get to actually hear the roar of the tornado. The roar was so loud, you could only faintly hear the sound of those inside (a freezer, I think?) screaming their heads off or trying to calm everyone down. As a kid, it was the scariest video of a tornado I had seen even though there was no tornado visible...which is probably why it's not on this list, but still should've been mentioned lol
