Now THIS is what I need when someone is going to recommend books--passion, enthusiasm and a cogent summary of *why* you loved the book(s) and what is to be expected in terms of world-building, character development, magical systems etc. I am inspired to check out the list you have provided and I thank you for that. I have also read hundreds of fantasy novels in my life and rarely am I surprised by how the story ends. Which is why I found Steven Erikson (Malazan Books of the Fallen), Tad Williams (Memory, Sorrow and Thorn) and Anne Bishop to be thoroughly amazing. I had very little sense of what was unfolding when I read Erikson; his world-building is profound, the magic system is compelling and his characters are so very, very grey-complicated and nuanced. There are scenes in those books that haunt me for their heartbreaking poignancy and can still make me cry unashamedly when I recall them. It is masterful and epic in its scope, and while it is long (10 volumes in the series, not including prequels and companion novels), that is why it makes me so happy. I am always saddened when I find a magnificent series but the story ends too soon for my liking and I am left wanting so much more. Williams' trilogy seemed more 'typical' of the high fantasy genre, and it is easy to believe you know how it will conclude and the enjoyment comes from the storytelling and character development. But I was so wrong...the end blindsided me (something he also did with the sci-fi (?) Otherland series) so that was impressive and well worth it. It's not often an author gets the drop on me like that. Bishop also does a superb job at worldbuilding and I would recommend anything she has written-Black Jewels, Tir Alainn, The Others, Ephemera. Each world she creates is rich and complex, her characters are vivid and while some of the themes can be triggering for some readers, her writing is careful and evocative. She also has a delicious and wicked sense of humour.I have read all her series multiple times, they are that good. In terms of an underappreciated work, I would recommend Sarah Ash and the Tears of Artamon trilogy. An unexpected mash-up of ideas and themes, but I found it compelling and enjoyable. Ian Irvine is also another excellent author whose works are underappreciated from what I can see. And for storytelling that is raw and poignant and provocative, the Merlin Codex series by Robert Holdstock.

Obligatory cheer for Aurelian Cycle and Red Rising! I'm with you regarding Mistborn! I remember loving it, but I read it so many years ago that I don't feel comfortable putting it in any favorite lists. On one hand, I really think people have a better memory than I do! On the other, I vividly remember most details from Red Rising and Fireborne, and it's been respectively 5 and 2 years since I've read them (compared to the 6 of Mistborn). I often wonder if it is because those are *truly* favorites, like top 3 of all time, or just because my memory really sucks!

@@FunFantasyBooks Boringly... the other one is ASOIAF. I forgot most of the details, but not how it made me feel when I read it almost ten years ago. This one I'm afraid to reread because then I'll start suffering from heartbreak again if the series is never completed! For Mistborn, same. It was my first adult Sanderson and my mind was blown by certain things, but knowing them beforehand I feel will diminish my experience. Also, I just realized that KZbin is being stupid again and not sending me notifications when you answer a comment, it only sends me that you liked the comment, so sorry if I did not answer any previous one/answered late❣

I absolutely loved A River Enchanted, happy to see it get some attention in a top 10 list! Incidentally, given the things you mentioned enjoying about Piranesi, has anyone recommended you check out Gormenghast by Mervyn Peake? All through my reading of Piranesi I just kept thinking it read like a spiritual successor to the first in that series, Titus Groan, written in a more forgiving style to be accessible to a wider audience. Gormenghast is one of the many classics of fantasy that have faded into the sidelines because of Tolkien and his heir's commercial success. Worth giving a shot, if you haven't as yet.

I am completely charmed. The fantasy series that I really enjoyed outside of the true classics of _The Lord of the Rings_ and _The Chronicles of Narnia_ was R. Scott Bakker's _The Prince of Nothing_ series. I know that these novels are very controversial, but there's something about the way he writes, builds a world, and crafts characters and their motives that really drew me in. I was avidly reading all of the reprints of Robert E. Howard's _Conan_ stories and a friend recommended _The Prince of Nothing_ , thinking I would like them due to a particular character. I collected all 7 of Bakker's books in this setting and was mostly very pleased. Again, I know these books aren't for everyone, but I found the grim-dark fantasy genre particularly enjoyable and challenging at the same time. Another I found fascinating was Tad Williams' _Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn_ trilogy. Incredibly immersive, and said to have inspired George RR Martin. Which leads me to my next series I really enjoyed. Stephen R. Donaldson's _Lord Foul's Bane_ a series that is incredibly complex and beautifully written. George RR Martin considers this series the best in the fantasy genre, and I understand why he appreciates it. Another challenging, but highly recommended novel series is Gene Wolfe's _Book of the New Sun_ . These were incredible and so difficult and complex, I have them queued to read again now that I'm a bit older and marginally wiser. My honorable mention is _The Lies of Locke Lamora_ by Scott Lynch. Lynch writes beautifully, and I am looking forward to finishing his series.

@ADudeWhoReads
@ADudeWhoReads Жыл бұрын
@@FunFantasyBooks Now I'm super curious to understand how you went from "6 months deeply hating it" to it being in your 5th spot! My take: the first half of the first book was really promising. Then the second half: The pacing was a mess. I don't think the "grit" actually served the story, it felt like it was just there to be shocking. Despite having lived through such horrors, the protagonist's motivations feel immature at best and plain dumb at worst. I couldn't bring myself to care about any of the characters. The writing style felt like it was trying to make every single sentence feel dramatic. To be fair, there are some redeeming qualities (mostly around world building and well-crafted historical parallels), but they're not enough to justify the high praise this series usually gets, in my humble opinion!

No book series is perfect, but some of the best I've seen are: *1) RA Salvatore's Legend Of Drzzt The first 25 or so books are really good, even phenomenal as a whole. Eventually he loses focus and starts doing reruns, but try writing 38 books in the same series. And Drizzt is one of the most popular fantasy characters. It would be really hard to pick out one or a few books that stand out. Personally book 3, Sojourn, is my favorite. The whole Dark Elf Trilogy stands out. Many enjoy The Icewind Dale Trilogy, the first published set in the story. There are even a few books dealing directly with characters others than Drizzt. *2) RA Salvatore's Saga Of The First King Unlike the Drizzt books, set in the D&D world created by others, this was his own imagination at work. This is enjoyable if a reader doesn't want a long epic. It's four books, that reach a perfect climax at the end. I think a main difference between the two styles & protagonists is while Drizzt is the person we want to be Bransen is the person we are more likely to feel we are and strive to overcome. *3) Ursula LeGuinn's A Wizard Of Earthsea While part of a largers series, The Earthsea Cycle which actually expanded from a trilogy into a quartet or tetralogy, the 1st book is the gem of her work. It deals with a foolish young man, barely more than a boy, who wants to be a wizard but makes mistakes on his path. There's demons and dragons, there's exciting adventures, there's a world of magic. It's intriguing. It's a shame the next 3 books are very dry and to me not enjoyable, but her imagination was great. Not every style works for everyone, and book one was a very different style than the others. The books were adapted into a miniseries on the scifi/syfy channel and later an animated version. *Honorable Mention) yeah, I like Game Of Thrones (or A Song Of Fire & Ice as Martin officially called it). I have read most of the books, and I'm not swearing off the newer installments, but since I have seen the whole HBO series & know the conclusion it's not a priority. It is an interesting and intriguing world, where many characters are likable and living between good & evil. Martin took great inspiration from historical figures and married it with his own fantasy world.

Sword of Kaigen was a good Avatar fan fiction turned into something more in-depth, but while I started off enjoying the book (the author took some interesting risks that I won't spoil for others to uncover), but it ultimately ended as a disappointment. I wonder if it would have worked better for me as a duology. What really bugged me was the pile of exposition at the end hinting at a second book.....in a book that is a stand alone. You cannot seriously have a top 10 Fantasy Series without: #1 The Lord of the Rings. The first and still the best and most popular fantasy series ever. Also Memory, Sorrow and Thorn by Tad Williams, an absolutely brilliant writer; and also The Nine Princes in Amber series by Roger Zelazny following the family of immortals who can create any world of their desires, but who scheme and plot for the throne of the one true world: Amber. Honorable mention to the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan.
@w8stral
@w8stral Жыл бұрын
Sorry, wheel of time sucks, wordy BORING books which should be 1/3 their length. Started good then went into polygamy and rambling boring BS and I'll even admit I own the books. Tad Williams Memory sorrow thorn ... is meh. He has a MUCH superior series Otherland which should be in top 10.
@cugelchannel4733
@cugelchannel4733 Жыл бұрын
@@w8stral I liked Otherland too, but Memory Sorrow and Thorn is much more popular. So, much so that fans badgered Tad for over 10 years for a sequel so he started a new series with The Witchwood Crown. You might not agree, but going by sales Tad is one of the most popular fantasy authors behind JK Rowling. I think Tad's best novel is The War of the Flowers, which has the advantage of being 1 volume. I'd say the Wheel of Time gets progressively more boring, until the last book, but again, it was overall a good series and also judging by popularity as measured by sales. I did not include the Percy Jackson series, which I found amusing light hearted reading, but I wouldn't argue its great adult fiction. It is good for kids though.
