Oh man I JUST read Shards of Honor and LOVED it!!! Cordelia did steal my heart, and so much happened in such a short book. Right with you also on Jade City, Ship of Magic, and the Fifth Season all being great series starters-no doubt I need to try all the rest!!

Love that feeling when you pick up a first book in a series and immediately want to get all the following books. I think Sush and I are going to reread Burning Kingdoms before the third book comes out too.

The Green Bone Saga and specifically Jade City absolutely changed the game for me in terms of fantasy. I was DNF-ing a lot of other adult fantasy books prior to reading Green Bone, but once I read Jade City, I was hooked. Even though I've now read a lot of other fantasy books+series, the Green Bone Saga still lives rent free in my mind to this day 😅

I was gonna start Mask of Mirrors this month BUT NOW IM EVEN MORE EXCITED TO. The way you talk about that series is how I talk about Dark of the West by Joanna Hathaway (the whole trilogy is brilliant). First book is a little more intrigue-y like you describe and then it just.... Opens up so much. So great. Audiobooks too! (Well only book 1 and 2). Now I want to reread it haha.

I started Vorkosigan with Warrior's Apprentice, which is still one of my favorite reads. (I thought Shards of Honor was good, but it didn't have the impact of the start of Miles's own story. I also really like the way she starts Chalion, Penric & Desdemona, and The Sharing Knife, but then I think she might be the best writer in SF&F today. I'd recommend Steven Brust's Jhereg strongly. The whole Vlad Taltos series is quite good, but Jhereg is exceptional ... IMO the best heist fantasy I've read (much better than The Final Empire for me). The Phoenix Guards, set in the same universe but a very different series, is unique. I find it brilliant, but it's not much like anything anyone else is writing. I'd recommend reading the sample on Amazon; if you don't like the start, you probably won't like the rest either. I really like the way that Mercedes Lackey starts many of her Valdemar series. I'd recommend Arrows of the Queen as a first read, even though she has become a better writer with later books, because it makes me immediately care about the protagonist and her allies (and hate her vile enemies, of course) and the book has heart. And as a bonus, I'll mention Nine Princes in Amber, which is both short and a compelling thrill ride, even though it has long sections of surrealism (which I normally despise) and the protagonist begins the book with amnesia (which can be done really badly). But Zelazny managed to make both of those work brilliantly (Matt's opinion notwithstanding).

🎭 No Ninth Rain?! No Ninefox Gambit?! No The Final Empire?! I'm truly shocked. Some of my favorite first books in series are--in no particular order--Titus Groan by Mervyn Peake (Gormenghast), The Fifth Season by N. K. Jeminsin (Broken Earth), The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden (Winternight), Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb (Farseer/Realm of the Elderlings), Senlin Ascends by Josiah Bancroft (Books of Babel), City of Last Chances by Adrian Tchaikovsky (Tyrant Philosophers), Devices and Desires by K. J. Parker (Engineer), My Heart is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones (Indian Lake), The Grace of Kings by Ken Liu (Dandelion Dynasty), The Black Company by Glen Cook (Black Company), Dune by Frank Herbert (Dune Chronicles), Elric of Melnibone by Michael Moorcock (Elric), Dawn by Octavia E. Butler (Xenogensis), and Hyperion by Dan Simmons (Hyperion Cantos).

I picked up The Ruin of Kings and The Mask of Mirrors because you pitched them so well 😊 I loved The Ruin of Kings (tho not the rest of the series, because Janel exists and is fully responsible for me be stuck in book 3 for 2 whole years at about 50 page mark 😅). I am currently about two thirds in The Mask of Mirrors and I am completely adoring it. I love all the characters (even Grey is growing on me 😲) and I don't remember when was the last time that happened! That isn't true even for my favorite series of all time! So as a character driven reader, I am currently adoring my reading time 💖

@@LiteratureScienceAlliance Hehe, I'm glad you love Janel, cause that means that you can properly enjoy that series! ☺ I've noticed that, for fantasy books at least, I have the biggest overlap with you out of all of the BookTubers I follow ☺ However, I feel that I am much pickier with characters than you are - I am especially sensitive to characters that an author believes are these amazing people that we should all adore while I think that they are bad people or unlikable (or both) 😅 I really don't like it when I feel like an author is trying to force down my throat just how angelic a character is, while I am sitting here in complete disagreement with them 😂 My current worst offenders are Feyre from ACOTAR and Althea from Liveship Traders.

This reminds me that I still need to go back and give The Fifth Season another go now that I know better what to expect because I just didn't click with the first like chapter I tried on audio only, but maybe immersion or physical, or just now that I am not in school anymore it'll click better
