I think those of us who have been in the hobby for a long time forget about the "beginner" fish. One of the best things I've done is to set up some aquariums with live bearers or easy cichlids. It lets me just enjoy the aquarium instead of going from 1 tank emergency to another.

I love gouramis, but have never kept them! I think that the pearl gourami might be too big for my aquariums? Don't know if it's best to have a pair or a small group and what size of an aquarium for them, because everyone seem to have different opinions... Then I also love the sparkling gourami, but that one seems so sensitive that there's always some kind of health issue? And the same about the chocolate one? We do have some red/orange thick lipped gouramis in the store where I work, and I like them, but don't know much about them compared to the others.

I haven't watched the podcast, but will post my recommendations here in the comments just to post them prior to watching as instructed. I am biased of course, based on my personal experiences. But here it goes, broke down into categories: All fishkeepers should keep at some point in their journey keep the following for a real rounded experience: For Cichlids: 1. Dwarf - German Blue Rams (a bit challenging to keep alive, but worth the beauty) or substitute with Kribensis 2. South/Central American - Thorichthys (recommend aureus or maculipinnis) for smaller but sheer beauty 3. African - Shellies or any of the smaller mouth brooding African Cichlids, to see this in real life is amazing. For Oddballs: 4. Any of the bichirs - for a very stimulating and mind-boggling experience For Tetras: 5. Cardinals, neons - in large group only, it will dazzle. For Danios: 6. Choprae for amazing colors but Pearl / Giant / Zebra could suffice For Plecos: 7. Ancistrus Bushy Nose (everyone should experience, I recommend long-finned too) For Catfish: 8. Pictus or Dwarf Petricola (Lucipinnis) For Barbs: 9. Tiger barbs for the sheer fun but can be rough (substitute Black Rosy or Hexazona for peaceful) 10. Any Dawkinsia, these get beautiful as they age, recommend Black Spot for cheaper or gorgeous Mascara.

Ram cichlid. Phantom tetras. Some of the small rasboras. Then, I think that everyone should try neocaridina shrimps at some point! They're fantastic.
