I think those of us who have been in the hobby for a long time forget about the "beginner" fish. One of the best things I've done is to set up some aquariums with live bearers or easy cichlids. It lets me just enjoy the aquarium instead of going from 1 tank emergency to another.

I love gouramis, but have never kept them! I think that the pearl gourami might be too big for my aquariums? Don't know if it's best to have a pair or a small group and what size of an aquarium for them, because everyone seem to have different opinions... Then I also love the sparkling gourami, but that one seems so sensitive that there's always some kind of health issue? And the same about the chocolate one? We do have some red/orange thick lipped gouramis in the store where I work, and I like them, but don't know much about them compared to the others.

My list 1) orange finned blue spotted hill trout (Barilius bakeri) - a fantastic shoaling fish with beautiful colours and very active 2) black neon tetra - as they are very hardy and great shoaling fish, 3) clown pleco - as they stay small, great algae eaters and a great looking fish 4) platy - these have some amazing colours, very hardy and breed very well 5) clown loach - puppy dogs of the fish world, great colours and scare the crap out of you because you think they are dead but they are just asleep at a funny angle 6) honey gourami - peaceful and just a stunning fish 7) pearl gourami - again just a stunning fish with its mixed colouration 8) leopard/zebra/giant/pearl danio - you can really get their patterns popping if you treat them right, they are fun to watch and so easy to look after 9) tiger barbs (all variants including ruby) - they have some great colours, always active and can keep you watching all day! 10) Ruby shark - such an intriguing fish, great colouration, very active and always looks busy and easy to look after.

I haven't watched the podcast, but will post my recommendations here in the comments just to post them prior to watching as instructed. I am biased of course, based on my personal experiences. But here it goes, broke down into categories: All fishkeepers should keep at some point in their journey keep the following for a real rounded experience: For Cichlids: 1. Dwarf - German Blue Rams (a bit challenging to keep alive, but worth the beauty) or substitute with Kribensis 2. South/Central American - Thorichthys (recommend aureus or maculipinnis) for smaller but sheer beauty 3. African - Shellies or any of the smaller mouth brooding African Cichlids, to see this in real life is amazing. For Oddballs: 4. Any of the bichirs - for a very stimulating and mind-boggling experience For Tetras: 5. Cardinals, neons - in large group only, it will dazzle. For Danios: 6. Choprae for amazing colors but Pearl / Giant / Zebra could suffice For Plecos: 7. Ancistrus Bushy Nose (everyone should experience, I recommend long-finned too) For Catfish: 8. Pictus or Dwarf Petricola (Lucipinnis) For Barbs: 9. Tiger barbs for the sheer fun but can be rough (substitute Black Rosy or Hexazona for peaceful) 10. Any Dawkinsia, these get beautiful as they age, recommend Black Spot for cheaper or gorgeous Mascara.

My list, with just 5 fish, before this video, no particular order: Some Pseudomugil-rainbowfish (I have the luminatus, love them, but there are many others as well). Some Melanotaenia-rainbow. Ram cichlid. Phantom tetras. Some of the small rasboras. Then, I think that everyone should try neocaridina shrimps at some point! They're fantastic. And then of course there are a lot of fish that I really want to learn more about, but I can't put them on a list like this because I have no experience of them (yet).

Downloaded a bunch of podcasts for a long trip. I listened to two of yours before I got to Joe Rogan! Great podcast, great list. I've kept 7/10 and currently have 5/10, and they are all keepers! My list would be similar, but I'd have to add another African Cichlid, the Krib. Peaceful, don't need a huge tank, and go well with many tetras and rasboras. And the last two tanks I will give up if I downsize are an Angel/Rummynose/Molly/Cory tank and my mbuna tank. I'll give up my reef before I give up those!

Ok Spotify as I do WC to these. But I stopped and want to congratulate for saying Angels need 55. So tired of the 29 BS. I have my 6Lx 2Wx 3T ( planted stump tank) for Angels and yes they get tall. So happy a 55 got recommended

I was maybe 5-8 years old. I had a 55 with an Oscar and a common pleco. That was the early 90s in Southern Indiana. I saw a TON of Oscars in 55s. I have a 55 now, but know better than to put an Oscar in it.
