All of these Bugs Bunny shorts are timeless classics. One not mentioned that's an absolute riot is "Operation :Rabbit" known for being the first pairing of Wile E. Coyote with Bugs Bunny (there would be 4 more shorts to follow) and actually Wile E. Coyote's second short after his debut with the Roadrunner in "Fast and Furry-ous." This is also the short that most people look at as "Wait, Wile E. Coyote can talk?" Oh, but it works so damn well. Bugs has to deal with the self-proclaimed "Wile E. Coyote, Super Genius" and it's a game of book smarts vs. street smarts. Also, the opening to this one with Coyote introducing himself and his plans to Bugs in front of that folding door is one of the funniest things ever.
@brianthomas24347 ай бұрын
A Wile E. forerunner, a wolf instead of a coyote, but looking and sounding like in the Bugs cartoons, deserves mention. He appeared with a sheepdog, the two starting the day punching a time clock, then the wolf attempts to steal sheep, the dog foils him. This is repeated ( with a time out for lunch) and at the end of the day they clock out, bid each other goodbye and head home.
@glowworm27 ай бұрын
@@brianthomas2434 The character in question is Ralph Wolf. He actually came AFTER Wile E Coyote. His first cartoon is "Don't Give Up the Sheep" which aired a year after "Operation: Rabbit" in 1953. He looks identical to Wile E. Coyote except for having a red nose. Also, the sheep dog's name is Sam. They are iconic!
@brianthomas24347 ай бұрын
@glowworm2 thank you. Maybe I'm being petty towards great artists, but it seems there should been some effort to distinguish between the characters, in voice and appearance (okay, Wile E. only spoke, two, three times?) What I really took from the Sam / Ralph cartoons was the fact that it was a job, complete with (contractually mandated?) breaks. Even as a child, I felt an existential comment was being made.
@glowworm27 ай бұрын
@@brianthomas2434 Ralph did have a distinctive voice from Wile E. actually, as Wile E. always spoke with a distinctive British accent. Ralph's was more American. Technically, Wile E. Coyote spoke at least 6 times. There were 4 Bugs Bunny shorts (there was a fifth one, but he didn't speak in that one, because Bugs was filling in for the Roadrunner) and two shorts, Roadrunner A Go-Go and Zip Zip Hooray! (Both these shorts were originally from a failed 1962 television pilot, Adventures of the Roadrunner. Honestly, even as a kid, I took Ralph as a separate character despite him looking exactly like Wile E. Coyote due to his red nose. The funny part though is that in "Sheep Ahoy", at the end of the short is a dead ringer for Wile E. Coyote, who has come to take over Ralph's shift for the evening. As Ralph and Sam haven't quite gotten their names yet in this short, the black nosed one greets Ralph as "George" while Ralph calls the other one "Sam". 🤣

I was so shocked cause they looked better than many other cartoons at the time. Even know over 80 years later they still hold up extremely well. It just goes to show you why it was called the golden age of cineme cause it really was amazing. Most cartoons today gwt forgotten soon after they stop airing but Looney Tunes is timeless.
