Why would you think that Cam or Mitch did not experience dysfunctionality in their relationship though? It should be a given that they've been through period in which they were dysfunctional, given their background and personality: a closeted farm boy growing up with no gay role model and an uptight closeted boy growing up with an oppressive father. Hell, they still find themselves being occasionally, mildly dysfunctional throughout Lily's childhood. Everything sweet starts out bitter.
