I didn't know anyone else ever heard of shinning force games and phantasy star 4. I remember renting both of them and shinning force 2 I could not get past the first devil guy. I want to say Zio until the kanomi cheat. . phantasy star I was stuck in the guy who kills Alys... Lol Zio again?? Anyway after finally beating him I had very little trouble with the rest of the game until the last guy I had to beat it later in life on an emulator.

Sonic 2 is also the game that began the tradition of video games being released on Tuesdays. When Sonic 2 was released SEGA had a huge nationwide advert fir Sonic 2sday. It was so successful that companies began following the same tradition and releasing games on Tuesdays. That became the standard and was true up until digital releases began to take a major chunk out of brick and mortar stores sales. So if you ever wondered why you had to go to Midnight releases on a Monday in order to get your new copy of Call of Duty, you have Sonic 2 to thank.

The reason that I ask is because the music on some of the games is definitely a bit off in a way that reminds me of that one clone Genesis from about a decade ago.

While I don’t agree with some of these games I do appreciate you being authentic in what you love man. Phantasy Star 4 is the best game in the series but contrary to most people I think the 3rd game is better than the 2nd. I would have included Mortal Kombat 2 and Shining Force 2 on a list like this. But we are all different. That’s the beauty of gaming!

Glad to see some love for Sonic Spinball! I never had a Genesis back in the day, but later on when Genesis emulation was making strides on the PC, Sonic Spinball was one of the first games I tried playing and I fell in love with its weird amalgamation of pinball and platforming elements. Is it a great pinball game? Not really. The physics are floaty and the game often feels sluggish, but I actually like that it plays a bit differently than most pinball games. I think it is unfairly maligned. I can understand that people may have been frustrated at the time when this game out instead of Sonic 3, but I think a lot of the people who dislike it today are just parroting what they've heard and have never actually bothered to play it.

Great list. Sonic 2 is the game my sisters and I played most as kids. It's the only sonic game i ever completed. Ghouls n Ghosts is my favorite game of all time but other than not seeing that i agree with your choices. Thanks for the video it was a good time

If you like "Sonic Spinball" I would suggest checking out "Dragon's Fury." Also, if you like "NBA Jam" (and who doesn't like "NBA Jam?), step it up one notch, and check out "NBA Jam: Tournament Edition" for the Sega CD. Specifically the SEGA CD version and not the Genesis version (although it's fine too).

For me, Thunder Force 4 (Lightening Force) is really missing, it's a title that should be included in any TOP Mega Drive #joke 😁 And personally, I would put Dragon's Fury instead of Sonic Spinball, the latter is in 30fps and that has always bothered me. The Growl, for me it's not an excellent title, but I respect your tastes =) Your top 10 is overall very good ! On paper, to a new Mega Drive player, I would say that objectively the holy trinity on MD is : Streets of Rage 2 Sonic 2 Thunder Force 4 But my personal holy trinity is : Sonic 1 Thunder Force 4 Dragon's Fury

But the Sonic 2/SoR2/Thunder Force 4 trio knew how to exploit the Mega Drive in the most beautiful way, they have no real faults, and are among the best in their genre of the entire 4th generation of console. SoR3 or Sonic 3 are excellent but not perfect.

There are wonderful games on this list. However, even though Growl, NBA JAM and Sonic Spinbakl are good games they are not even in my top 200. You should have considered triple A games like Shining Force 2 and 1, Beyond Oasis, Monster Workd IV, Comix Zone, Strider, Quackshot, Alien Soldier, Gargoyles, Pocahontas, Aladdin, Vectorman, Eternal Champions, Castle of Illusion, The Revenge of Shinobi, Virtua Racing, RocketKnight Adventures, Ristar, Pulseman, Shadow Dancer, Ranger X, Thunder Force IV, Moonwalker, Flashback, Road Rash 1 and 2, Red Zone, Kid Chamaleon, Toe Jam & Earl, Rolling Thunder 2, Alysia Dragon and many others.

I don't consider that a Sonic game can be in the top 5, nor that it really competes with Mario (shorter, easier and returns you to the beginning after losing, unlike Mario which had longer, more difficult games and with continuations unlimited). They are games where speed partially automates the experience (except in the first one), and they are also relatively easy games, due to the lack of dangerous obstacles and enemies during the game (and the rings make things easier). And it does not have a difficulty selection (like many other Genesis games did).

I really like this list! I have a lot of time for Growl despite it not being considered a great game generally. In the UK we had a store in a nearby town that had Japanese imports, which was crazy back then for this area. At that time, Growl was pretty unheard of here, I bought it based on the images on the back of the box and loved it, spent many hours on it :)
