Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, three of tennis’ all-time greats have been entertaining us on the courts for years now, with fans debating who is the best. The GOAT list in any sport is always a debate had amongst fans, with it being no different with tennis, with people having their own views and thoughts. How They Play have compiled their list of the top 10 tennis players of all time, so with Wimbledon just around the corner, what better time to take a look at the list?
1) Novak Djokovic. At 35 years of age and in the late prime years of his career, Djokovic certainly has the potential to win more Grand Slam titles. With 21 Grand Slam titles already under his belt he trails just Rafael Nadal who stands at 22. And with a record 373 weeks ranked as number one, it’s hard not to give Djokovic serious consideration as the greatest of all time.
Novak’s dominating start to the 2021 season with wins at the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon made it clear that Djokovic was the best player in the world in 2021. 2) Rafael Nadal. At 36 years of age, the fiery Spaniard, known as Rafa and “The King of Clay,” has won 22 Grand Slam titles to eclipse his closet rivals, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. Rafael is widely regarded as the greatest clay-court player of all time, although fans of Bjorn Borg may dispute this claim. His record 14th French Open title in 2022, in dominating fashion, certainly makes it difficult to imagine anyone being better on clay. Nadal has proven that he deserves serious consideration in the discussion for the greatest of all-time. His impressive start to the 2022 season with wins at the Australian Open and French Open gives Rafa 22 Grand Slam Championships to surpass Federer and Djokovic who remain at 20 and 21 respectively. I'd still rate Federer higher than Nadal. He has more titles than him at Wimbledon, USO, AO and WTF (4 of the 5 biggest tournaments), he has way more weeks at no1, showing more dominance on diffirent surfaces. Nadal usually is absent after the USO, when the indoor season starts.

Rafa is better than Roger in Grand Slams, M1000, Olympics and H2H. Besides, Rafa has won every GS at least twice. The GOAT is between Rafa and Novak.

The difference in olymipcs and GS isn't that huge (1 and 2), where i would say the difference is huge is in masters tittles. One the other hand, Federer has huge advantage in number of weeks at no1 and number of ATP finals. You can't compare 1 gold medal to 6 ATP finals, the difference is too great. And also what i think, the big stain in Rafa's career it's their h2h. But not the way you thought. In their last 8 encounters, Federer won all of their matches. Rafa wasn't able to figure out Roger's game at the end of his career. This isn't a good way to end their rivalry. And Nadal also has never developed a game style for indoor hardcourts, which both Novak and Federer did. Not just on that surface, both Novak and Federer had the game for all the surfaces, which cannot be said for Nadal. So when you add and substract everything, i would put Federer above Nadal.

Controversial opinion! I think Murray is probably top 10 of all time in terms of the level of tennis he reached. He may not have the stats in terms of slams but I think he did so consistently well throughout his career and the biggest factor that made him an all time great is that he had to compete with the big 3. Just my opinion and I understand why other players would be seen as better.

If we were just going to go off slams alone then yes Rafa would be the 2nd greatest player of all time, however Roger was always a more complete player than Rafa. Won more slams than Rafa at every slam besides RG of course. Roger also held more weeks at number one showing Rogers dominance more across all surfaces. For me it’s 1. Nole 🐐 2. Roger 🐐 3. Rafa 🐐

Since you mentioned a WEAK era here are some facts to consider : -Federer won his first 10 grand slams against : Philipoussus, Safin, Roddick, Hewitt, Roddick, Agassi (at age 35), Baghdatis, Nadal (but at age 20), Roddick and Gonzalez. Throughout his entire career he won only 4 slam finals against Nadal and Djokovic. Three against Nadal (when the Spaniard was 20, 21 and 32 years old) and only ONE against Djokovic when the Serb was 20 years old (in 2007). Federer won a total of 20 slams and the total number of slams his opponents in those finals held at the time of the final was 36 (1,8 slams per finalist). The average ATP ranking of his opponents in the finals was 15. Never won a slam final against the #1 ranked player, won 5 slams against players outside the top 10. -Djokovic won his first 10 slams against : Tsonga, Murray, Nadal, Nadal, Nadal, Murray, Federer, Murray, Federer, Federer. Throughout his career he won 4 slam finals against Nadal, 4 against Federer and 5 against Murray. That is 13 slams against players from the Big 4. Djokovic won a total of 21 slams and the total number of slams his opponents in those finals held at the time of the final was 126 (6,0 slams per finalist). The average ATP ranking of his opponents in the finals was 7.05. The level of competition Djokovic faced was much higher and all tennis players admit it. Won just 2 slams against players outside the top 10. There is no way around statistics and this is how it goes : - Against top 10 players : -Djokovic played 347 matches, won 240 (69,2%), lost 107. By far the best record and counting. Of all the matches Djokovic played in his career a whopping 28,1% was against top 10 players. -Federer played 347 matches, won 224 (64,6%), lost 123. 22,7% of his matches were against top 10. Nadal played 288 matches, won 186 (64,6%), lost 102. 22,4% of his matches were against top 10. - Against top 5 players : -Djokovic played 188 matches (15,2%), won 114 of them (60,6%), lost 74. -Federer played 179 matches (11,7%), won 104 of them (58,1%), lost 75. -Nadal played 154 matches (12%), won 93 (60,6%), lost 61. Overall, Federer is THIRD best. Djokovic is just a year younger than Nadal (they are almost the SAME age) but you only blame Djokovic for being younger than Roger, LOL. All things considered Roger was probably lucky to win so much before Nadal and Djokovic matured. There are no ifs, just metrics, and Roger is losing in almost every category. He is not even a contender for GOAT anymore. It`s between Nadal and Djokovic and the gap will only increase. Game over for him and his fanboys. But it WAS a great run. While it lasted.

On clay Federer beat Nadal only in Madrid. Federer never won the Masters 1000 in Monte Carlo or in Rome and he never beat Nadal there either. Djokovic won Monte Carlo twice, Madrid three times and Rome six times. At every clay slam or Masters 1000 Djokovic beat Nadal at least twice. Federer won only two matches against Nadal on clay. Both in Madrid, because of the altitude and greater speed of the ball. One of those two wins was on the slippery blue clay. Face it, Federer couldn`t touch Nadal on clay over his whole career. The only player who could push Nadal on clay was Djokovic. When people talk about all-time greats they talk by using metrics. That`s why your Federer is in front of Borg.
