My personal favorite bedroom amp is my Micro Dark. The hybrid design lets it sound consistent at any volume, it has a headphone jack for late night practice or writing, an effects loop, and it’s super tiny and light so I could take it with me on out of town trips. When I had an OR15 I really didn’t think of it as a bedroom amp, even in 7w mode that thing was super loud and like any all tube amp you’re dooming out on it doesn’t really have the same character with the master rolled down.

I have a micro dark as well it was my first amp. It has a cool character especially when I boost it with my Dronemaster it gets a nice sludgey chug tone. My only issue is it doesn't have enough low end even with my Marshall 1960 cab and the shape control is pretty limited with the EQ. I've tried an EQ in the loop and it didn't really help. I got the best luck by running the FX send of the micro dark into the front of another amp as if it was a distortion pedal. I have an Origin 20 and I agree even on half power or .5 watts it's still loud enough to disturb people 😂 but the micro dark can be pretty quiet but it still can bother others in my house so I often practice with plugins at night

I have the micro terror. Looking to try out the Dark version. For the moment I have put together a 1x12 cab with a Mojotone BV 30V and I am super happy. Im a 50 year old guitar noob on a budget and I dont really plan on playing any shows so It works really well for me and I love the tone I get with a Kealy Fuzzbender and a JHS Notaklon.

My go to is the legendary Pignose. Small and portable, batteries last forever, has a preamp out. Basically a fuzz pedal with a speaker. They record really well, take pedals nicely, and can get lots of unique tones. And, louder than you might think. You can get really creative with them. I tried hanging it from a string in front of a mic, and spinning it really fast. Sounded so cool. Those little amps deserve more love.

I recently upgraded to an OR15 and PPC112 cab and it’s amazing. It has the ability to get very, very loud if you want it to and the tone is killer. It takes pedals well, but also has a great stoner metal tone using just amp gain. 10/10 I would absolutely recommend it for Doom and Stoner metal.

The Blues Jr. is SO underrated. If you have a nice clean tone, you have a great pedal platform... for ANYTHING! They're easy to maintain and really loud! The reverb is lovely and the fat switch, really adds some nice bottom end. Like the Boss Blues Driver, it's not just for blues. It's very limited by it's name

Used Peavey Bandit and Joyo splinter for some nasty loose sludge that works in the bedroom, but keeps up with a drummer and can play gigs. Lead channel good for non stoner sounds, nails death doom, funeral doom, post metal, etc. I replaced the speaker in my Redstripe Bandit with a Celestion Redback, and it's a weapon.

Any tube amp with an effects loop and stick a Mooer preamp pedal in the effects loop (on its clean blue channel). This becomes your attenuator, allowing you to turn up a large 100watt head to get the tone you want, then use the Mooer Pedal of your choice and use its volume to control how loud you want your amp. These preamps are under $100 US. I use the US Gold 012 Mooer preamp on my Marshall DSL HR head though a Marshall 2X12 cabinet with a V30 and Creamback H in it.

What about the Blackstar Debut 50R? It's sort of like the Boss Katana, but with different features (not as many built in effects, but it has an FX loop in it). It's a solid state amp with a power reduction switch so it can go either 50W or 5W. It has a clean channel, an overdrive channel w/ MOSFET preamp, and a headphone jack. I think it sounds pretty good too.

I’ve got a Laney Cub combo, I think it’s 20W, tube driven, master volume, with a 12” speaker, a digital reverb, a channel switch, a footswitch jack for the reverb and gain channel, and a send-return. It’s a nice small amp, and has served me well, and they are not that expensive. There’s also a head version although they seem less commonly available. However, it’s downstairs in storage of late, as I mostly use a two note cab sim at the end of my pedalboard and go straight to the mixer. But I’m gonna keep that amp. Would definitely recommend.

I HIGHLY recommend the Joyo Meteor. A mini head that's a clone of the Micro Dark. It actually sounds better and has bluetooth. So you can run your phone or laptop without need to connect with a cable. I find myself using it more than my high dollar tube amps. It sounds killer even without pedals. I set it on top of my larger amps and have probably knocked it off for a drop of 4ft to a hardwood floor 20 times and it still works. I also had the Blues Jr. If you get one I highly recommend changing the speaker out to a Celestion Creamback or clone of one. Just make sure you match the ohms or your amp will be half as loud. I actually don't recommend the Blues Jr at all and sold it off pretty quick. Surprised it made the list at all in that price range. A Vox AC15 would be a cooler amp or even the Marshall DSL series. Personally I would recommend the Marshall Origin series heads over a Fender of any kind. They get a bad rap because the controls don't work the same as normal Marshalls. But there are KZbin videos that show how to set them to get a perfect AC/DC tone then you can base your cleaner tone off that. They also have the drop down watts selection but I always run it at full then use a pedal for more dirt. Which I'm sure 100% of you will do with any amp. I have an Orange 1x12 cab but they run a 4x12 great and are plenty loud if needed. When you get to amps from $700 to $1400 I again recommend something else. I have the Supro Black Magick combo. You can find them used for only about $700+. An amazing sounding amp that takes pedals extremely well and you can run an ext. 8 ohm speaker cab with it at the same time. Which is cool because currently I'm getting the sound of an open back and closed back at the same time. They are also plenty loud if you need it. I believe 35w. The speaker they come with is a great sounding Eminence designed for the amp. With zero need to be changed out. That's one of the issues with lower priced combos. Normally the speaker they come with is garbage so you have to figure in the cost of a higher quality speaker to get the most out of your amp. Mine is the loudest amp I have anymore and can shake the windows if turned up. But sounds great at lower volumes. They are a faithful clone of the amp that Page used. I also highly recommend the Bugera Power Soak "PS-1". I have had mine for 5 years now with zero problems. You can run any amp at full volume and turn the output down to whisper quiet. So it acts like the greatest overdrive pedal ever. But your amp has to be 100w or lower. Probably the best option if you have a loud amp already. No need for a bedroom amp at all and they're inexpensive. I got mine new for $99. I'd recommend buying it off Amazon for their return policy so if you get a bum one you can easily replace it. As with all inexpensive gear there is a higher chance of getting a bum one but mine has worked flawlessly and I use it constantly with my Supro and that cost me $1300 new. So basically I disagree with every lower option than this video. But I promise you I'm giving you correct info after trying most every option suggested in a reasonable price range. I do recommend getting the Origin 20w head. That way you can run any cab and not have to get your tubes biased every time you change them. Just plug and play. The 50w Origins you have to get biased. 20 tube watts is alot louder than you think and can hang live. In the Origins the red label Marshall tubes are actually JJs and the white label ones are Chinese. Personally I changed the white labels to JJs but the Chinese sound good. I think it's only the preamp tubes that are Chinese but they did vary from year to year. I think the new ones are mostly JJs. If I'm honest, Chinese tubes can sound great and I probably didn't need to change them. If JJs are good enough for AC/DCs mountains of vintage Marshalls live then they are good enough for me.

I am literally MORTIFIED that the Hughes and Kettner Grandmeister 40 got no mention. Seriously, that amp is LOADED. You don’t need a cabinet because the cab simulation on it is actually really good, it’s 40 watts so you can gig with it, it’s got a clean channel that goes from almost fendery cleans to more of a Vox type sound when you kick in the boost, and 3 gain channels that range from early 70s Marshall tones all the way to Soldano (ish) and Rectifier tone and feel. Then you get MIDI, effects and a killer noise gate. ~950-1100 on the used market all day long. There’s only one other amp that comes close to the value brought and that’s the new Soldano Astro 20

@@FuzzlordEffects You definitely should, the amp was way ahead of everybody and still is...only just in the last 3 years are we starting to see some amps even come close to having a feature-set like that, but usually the options cost 25-50% more. It's crazy that it came out around TEN years ago and still barely has any competition. For whatever reason, Hughes and Kettner stuff barely ever gets the fanfare it deserves, but they're always a huge innovator.

LA30 ftw. If you snag any kinda boost with a coloring option. Like the TIboost, or like a tc spark boost, you can get really close to early sabbath tones. Worth the purchase. I play mine thru some orange cabs, so with the treble channel, you kinda get a bit too bright sound, so you gotta EQ to darken that up. But it’s killer. Would love to play thru something with greenbacks, or even some old fane speakers.

Great topic for a video but unless your bedroom is a medium sized venue, some of these are going to blow your door off the hinges at a modest volume. I think I'd be considered a hobbyist/bedroom guitarist/Fender enjoyer and my Mustang LT25 gets more use than my Princeton. My neighbors bang on the wall when I use the Mustang but they'd call the landlord and the cops if I plugged in the Princeton. Anyway, I needed an amp that didn't need a grounded outlet and had a flat sound for my amp/cab sims. I bought a 15 watt combo discounted at Bezos-mart from a company I've never heard of. Big mistake. The fizzy, static-like drive channel faintly bleeds into the clean channel and the fizzy drive channel has clean signal in parallel. I'm kicking myself for not getting the Orange and an extension cord.

@@FuzzlordEffects I did the Billboard article a disservice, it was in the “Best Amps for Home Use” section. 🤦🏻‍♂️😂 “Best Guitar Amps for Home Use Kamerman advises that you shouldn’t choose your amp solely based on its volume capabilities. “You never need to turn an amp up too loud,” he says. “If you’re playing the biggest venue, the sound guy is still going to be like can you keep that at two [amps max]?” Your focus should remain on what you think sounds the best when you play your guitar. Roland JC-120 Jazz Chorus 120-Watt Guitar Amplifier One of Kamerman’s favorites is the Roland JC-120 guitar amp, which comes with built-in wheels to move it smoothly from one spot to another. The Boss Katana is the real deal, man. For those of you who are curious, it Dooms. I have a few videos on my channel that demonstrate it's capability for that style of play, but it's a very versatile amp. I have the MkII version and it has: - Headphone jack for silent practice. - Multiple slots to "save" a custom-built tone (can have one clean tone and separate distorted tone at the press of a button) - Variable Wattage Knob (can be 0.5, 50, or 100 watts; thus covering everything between bedroom, practice, and gigging) - FX Loop - Aux Input - Built-in Reverb and Delay (delay has tap tempo too!) - Takes pedals very well For the price, you get a lot of functionality. So much tweakability in basically every knob on the amp. There's even an application you can get for your PC that lets you further tweak each setting. It's seriously a killer piece of gear. I can't suggest it enough.

One very important piece of info you didn't mention. Tube watts are ALOT louder than solid state watts.

They aren’t if you use the proper impedance cab for solid state

@@FuzzlordEffects Hmmmm. I guess I'm wrong then. This is from previous experience as a 54 year old man. Back when I cared a solid state Peavey, etc had to be a higher rated wattage to compete. I will say my Joyo micro dark copy is very loud for 15w but it has a tube in it. But my 20w all tube Marshall head is much louder. I've never really dug into it. It was just the opinion back in the day and my experience with old school solid state amps. They are probably more efficient these days?Honestly, it's not something I care about since I have 7 amps Lol. I feel like a 50W tube amp would put out much more volume than a 50W Katana. But I have zero experience with a Katana. I will delete my incorrect comment after you have read my response and previous experience. Weirdly, Fender amps seem to be louder than other amps. Twins are deafening but only 85w? I don't like the sound of a Twin. By far my least favorite classic amp.

A lot of the confusion and bit of truth to it is that most solid state amps are meant to drive a lower impedance load like 4 ohms for example. So when plugging into a standard 8 or 16 ohm guitar cab they do lose a lot of power from that. I just got a super crush 100 and it should be able to actually put out 100w into a normal 8 ohm load, but I do plan on doing a video soon comparing a solid state amp to a tube and doing a power test and measuring! Should be fun to check out It’s a bit confusing thing for most folks and glad it came up in this video 🙏

@@FuzzlordEffects Ok. I'll leave my comment and will definitely be looking forward to your video. The solid state amps I was talking about were combos so I would think impedance would be correct. Mainly talking about the 80s Peavey combos vs the tube amps of the time. I've never had a solid state head unless you count the Joyo with a preamp tube.

I have a JP2C half stack and it works fine for bedroom jamming…sounds a bit better when you crank it but I never take it past 8 o’clock because this mf is LOUD but it sounds great down low too.

Good stuff and nice range. I have an older Vox VT 30 where I swapped out the speaker for a Jensen MOD and it sounds and plays great. It also has one tube in it and mine is a Sovtech tube. What I love about this series is that there is a power attenuator on the back so while it can go up to 30 watts, I usually just play it at 15-20 (it's a knob so I just adjust it to ear). These amps were Vox basically building an amp around their foot pedal. They are also a good place to start if you are effects curious as there are usually quite a few built in. I bought a Fender Cyber Twin back in 2000 and this is the simplified version of that. I also have an Ibanez Tubescreamer amp that looks like an old TV. I swapped out the stock Ruby tubes with JJs and there was only a slight tone shift. Still it's a fun 5 watt tube amp that has a Tubescreamer built right into it. I also have bigger combo amps: a Roland JC 120, a Yamaha G100 II, a Peavey Studio 210, and a Peavey KB 100 (really bad very underrated amp for both guitar and bass since it originally was intended for keyboard).

Missing was the Randall Diavlo 1 watt tube RD1. Great for any metal, paired with typical boost/fuzz/distortion pedals. FX loop. Can also mess with different tubes to change tone. There are even people selling mod kits to really change is tone.
