The top spot should have gone to "Shadow Man" while the game's A.I. isn't particularly difficult the overall level design is an exercise in platforming that would give seasoned Mario players a run for their money. No cheap time limits here, just pure, unfiltered exploration that pushes your navigational skills to the edge. "Asylum Cageways" being among one of the most challenging levels to grace a video game. Collecting all of those Tribals for the last ship part was extremely exhausting since you had to play every section perfectly without accidentally killing a tribal, you kill one, do the section all over again, no matter how far you're into it. It was extremely unfair, but the ending was worth it. Great game.

Jet Force Gemini is underrated. It's ÜBER fun and captivating. I also do not remember a more fluid combat system that meshes third person and first person shooting so seamlessly. it has a ton of re-exploration value. you go through tons of things that require a key or another character, forcing you to revisit later with your new character or key, and find what you could not before. lots of fun weapons, there's even mini games, there's rewards for collecting insect heads! rare really had the formula back then.

Conker was easy exept for the Saving Pricate Ryan chapter (especially when you escape with the timer and lasers). Banjo Kazooie was tougher than Tooie, items would reset if you left level. Perfect Dark on Perfect difficulty wasn't that hard, the pattern to killing enemies was quickly peak out then take cover, let enemies shoot at cover till they stop, peak back out and kill them.

I actually can get past the Lava Race level in Conker's Bad Fur Day without dying or getting any damage. It's believe it or not one of my favorite parts of the game. Here’s my strategy; whenever you’re about to approach a stegosaurus, pull back on the control stick and Conker will slow down. That always helped me. In fact, it still does to this day whenever I replay Conker. Although playing Conker's Bad Fur Day for the first time ever in my life and escaping Omaha Beach during the end of the “It’s War” chapter however was a HUGE pain! It took me about twelve times until I finally got past it. I don't have a huge trouble with it now, but when I first played this game I wanted to punch something!

@MechaGodAnri6 жыл бұрын
I disagree. I think they should only take normal difficulty into consideration when making a list. I only say this because from game to game how they raise difficulty level differs. Some games make it so that the higher the difficulty the less damage you do and the more you receive. Others make puzzles harder, shorten time limits and some just increases health of enemies but don't affect anything else. Then you have some that will give you a boost in damage but also at the expense of your opponent doing more as well. The list goes on so it wouldn't really be balanced to do it that way which wouldn't really be fair game unless the list was specifically made for that topic.

It was back when you had to actually go out to a video store to rent a game where I rented those game and tried them out on a weekend. One thing I remember most about Mischief Makers was the fact that in order to beat the game entirely, you had to collect everything from each level. If you didn't, then the ending would stop in the middle and then you would get the message about having to go back and try to complete the game all over again. That made me want to throw my controller at the tv a few times.

Over a decade later: several of those games, I still haven't completely beat. (Racer, Tooie, and Gemini)
@Steffu4 жыл бұрын
Tooie's challenging, now i'm older, i can respect and see the points. I learned a little trick to beat Canary Mary. place your finger and thumb together nails touching each other and run them across the button as much as you can, saves having blistered thumbs :)

I totally called it. Jet Force Gemini was the hardest gaming experience for me on the N64. I love it so much.

Doom 64 should have been an honorable mention at least. But then again, like with Turok 64, I used the codes. :)

Turok, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Jet Force Gemini, Shadow Man, Blast Corps, Perfect Dark and Banjo Tooie, This could also double as a best of N64 list. After owning most of the N64 library, I can safely say that these are truly must play games, I can also add that Rare made alot of the games on this list, some of their best games in my opinion.

***** Open world, no real sense of direction or what to do next. Difficult shooting segments, time travel. That game had too much to offer indeed. That reminds me of another title on N64 fuckin' Shadowman. That game was ridiculously non-linear.

So glad Mischief Makers is on this list!! Not only super hard but so much fun and innovative. Jet Force Gemini is a masterpiece, only beat it once. Its that hard. I also think Diddy Kong Racing should be on this list. Those silver coin challenges were no joke. Also it has a hard mode if you enter "timetolose" in the magic codes.

Turok 2 - never played it, but I beat Turok 1. Banjo-Tooie - one of the hardest games? No way, same difficulty as Super Mario 64. Blast Corps - Some of those Platinum Medals are hell. Definately super hard. Respect to all who got all Platinum medals! Star Wars Racer - Played it, very hard game. Respect to everyone even considering to play this. Conker's Bad Fur Day - like any of Rare's platformers, challening but 100% beatable, difficulty like Super Mario 64. Mischief Makers - Love this game! Just like Blast Corps, some of the S-Times are crazy, but they're just optional. Still respect for everyone who got them all! F-Zero X - Challenging, but 60fps made controls so flexible that once you get the hang of it, even the hardest cups became kind of easy. Imo the difficulty in F-Zero X and GX is fair and balanced. Perfect Dark - Just like GoldenEye, beating some of the stages in hardest mode is a real achievement and earns my gamers respect. Silicon Valley - Of all the N64 platformers I beat 100% (or in this case 99% because of the bug), this was definately the hardest. You should have put Body Harvest on the list instead. Jet Force Gemini - Of all the games I beat 100% (or in this case 99% again, because of a missable energy tank for Lupo) this one had the hardest final boss I ever ecountered. What a relief, that I was able to beat the game still, with help of a second player controlling Floyd the robot to assist in shooting. Even with everything maxed out, this boss was relentless, unforgiving, and deadly.

Conker's bad fur day wasn't that hard. There were a few challenging stages like the lava surf race and the zombie house. But two games that I am struggling N64 that I haven't beat are Banjo tooie and zelda: Majora's mask.

Glassjaw 311 Ha, I remember that one. Can't remember the cheat itself though (either invincibility or invisibility), but you had to beat facility in under 1Min 30Sec on 007 difficulty. I sat three days at that shit ;-)
