Word of Honor being the highest rated costume drama of 2021 is incredibly well deserved!! It was the perfect amalgamation of martial arts, adventure, found family dynamics, and of course, the most epic and unforgettable romance between the two male leads, Zhou Zishu and Wen Kexing. ❤

@@trojanleo123 And you would be objectively wrong because Zhou Zishu and Wen Kexing are canonically lovers in the novel the show is based on. You would have to be sleeping through the show to think that a man putting his own hairpin on another man's head is platonic when it's 100% a romantic gesture in Chinese culture, especially when it signifies the engagement between two lovers. They're also shown to be "dual cultivating" at the end of the drama, which has sexual connotations in wuxia and their promise to live and die together is rooted in their romantic feelings for each other. Their relationship simply isn't up for interpretation. It's factually a romantic one.

China has banned explicit depiction of homosexuality in its media so Boys Love dramas are often censored unless you have clever screenwriters like the one from Word of Honor who carefully injected romantic elements in the show while passing censorship standards. Word of Honor, at its core, is about the love story between two men. This is indisputable fact as many people who watched this in China generally understand this is a Boys Love drama. You have to be dense, high, a homophobe, or a combination of all three to miss that.

@@trojanleo123 Considering the censorship in China, WoH seriously pushed the boundaries in making their subtext as contextual as possible. This doesn't count as queerbaiting. This counts as desperately trying to commit as much as they can, and still be aired. The cast and crew are clear the characters are gay and in love & there is a scene where ZZS says ' I love you' to WKX soundlessly, that the lip readers have picked up. If *you* don't want to read this story as m/m, knock yourself out, but the cast & crew have absolutely no doubts what they were making from day one.

I’m loving Luoyang, it’s a thrilling ride with a side of humour. Huang Xuan/Gao Bingzhu is killing his part, plus Victoria Song and Wang Yibo are also terrific as their characters. Baili Hongyi’s wife is trying so hard to get her husband to notice her, thankfully she is very slowly winning and cracking that brick 😂, but really, how many times has she called out his name! I can’t pick out my top 3, there’s too many that I like equally. I’m so happy that Word of Honor is at #1! Zhan Zhe Han must be proud of this accomplishment. I still can’t believe that I’m worried about him, his family and his future. I normally wouldn’t pay ongoing attention but the injustice and hate he received really upset me. Every time I see Simon Gong in another show I can’t help but think of ZZH. While I’m happy for SG and I do like him, I feel that ZZH is a better actor (SG is improving) and he’s missing so many opportunities. Ok I’ll stop now. 🤭 I can’t wait to start Sword Snow Stride, just wanting more episodes before I start. I normally watch shows that are completed because I can’t stand waiting for new episodes, but there are some shows that I can’t wait any longer. I haven't watch any Chinese drama this 2021 aside from "One and Only" I'm so happy it's on top 3! 👏 One and Only is a slow-burn drama, therefore, it might not be everyone's cup of tea. However, it is still a really good drama with its romance and court intrigue. This is definitely a good drama for those who are looking for a slow burn yet beautiful romance story.

i agree that Luoyang is just too good to only managed a rating of 7 this far. it probably has something to do with the "rating sabotage" which was exposed when iqiyi's airing of the first episode was delayed by an hour due to some technical glitch. according to reports, ratings of 1 and bad reviews came flooding in within that hour in spite of no one could have possibly seen the drama yet at that point. it's obvious that there's some sort of insidious and malicious campaign to counteract whatever good ratings Luoyang would receive thereafter.

I am surprised that the Long Ballad is not higher rated. I really enjoyed this costume drama - the only drama so far where I did not skip scenes. I really like its pacing from beginning to end. It's also the only dramas that I care about the characters and what happen to them even the supporting cast. The only negative and distracting quality about this drama is as Marcus pointed out, the overuse of red lipstick by the FL.

Hey Marcus; a little late to the party today but I too have a list though it contains both modern and costume dramas. My favorite costume drama of the year is TLB hands down. Modern goes to YAMG. But I also really liked (in no particular order) DC, The Imperial Coroner, YAMH, Ultimate Note, and A River Runs Through It. I can definitely say that out of the 3 I'm watching now, in order of best plot and cohesion and character development; it would go: WITM, Luoyang, and The Psychologist. Definitely a year for good dramas. I hope this continues into next year! Thanks for a great update.

Out of these...Word of Honor was my favorite,but the best wasn't listed because it was aired in December, and just finished being subbed first part of January. I highly recommend it. It is Novoland: Pearl Eclipse. Best Chinese drama I've seen so far. 48 episodes and it keeps you interested. No lagging in the middle to make it longer. I've watched over 500 dramas, Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean and Japanese , so far ,and this one is great!❤ leads are Yang Mi, William Chan, and Xu Kai chen.

Given the recent issues with Douban and the fact that it is so manipulated, is it really still a valid source to be judging dramas by? The rating for Luoyang for example has to be heavily influenced by the constant ongoing attacks and prejudice against Wang Yibo (and Victoria Song). Perhaps you can also explain why viewers in China are unable to view actors based on their performances rather than a whole set of pre-determined reasons that they won't be any good. Again with Luoyang the number of people who are unaware that the novel has not been published and continue to use that comparison for their mean spirited attacks is almost laughable. What happened to the great declaration of cleaning up the internet in China? My suspicion is that without the ability to have discussions about politics, current affairs, global issues, and other sensitive topics, the only outlet they seem to have is to focus on entertainers as public figures they can target. It's curious that there are so many attacks claiming Wang Yibo is unattractive and untalented but at the same time he's apparently so hugely popular for these same traits.

@@leelien5679 And when it comes to any ratings, I read the comments carefully and analyze what the cons and pros about the drama, does the explanation make sense? What is the drama kind of about? Is there anything that stands that would make give the drama a try. I never really watch a drama base on popularity, it depends if the drama captures my attention to make it all the way to the end. I had dramas that I stopped watching in the middle, so many things do matter, like directing, script/storyline/plot, any memorable characters, team chemistry and battle choreography if any in order for me to make it to the end. I understand most dramas are not perfect and may have flaws, but as long the flaws does not get in the way of a good drama.

RE SWORD SNOW STRIDE NO SPOILER ALERT Marathon 1-8.Very highly recommend to watch.Interesting drama plot of developments all interwined together with fantastic fighting performances.Each episode will reveal interesting details which are important to the drama plot developments.2 FL .Nangong pu she, one of the FL, super good in martial fighting skills.Drama plot moves from bei Liang to WUDANG.......drama continues.Cheers for dramatic nonstop drama time

Really. I missed the quality of Nirvana in Fire I & II. And for me, this really reminds me of them, at least the quality. The story is so deep and complex, yet not that hard to keep up, and really interesting. I wish I could read the novel in english, if any. Oh and I have been waiting for it because male lead really performed well in Joy of Life, even tho I did not finish the novel. Waiting for 2nd cour JOL tooo.

@@Pqoq noted .yes when I saw the first few episodes the atmosphere, the background sceneries, the background music .....certainly reminded me of nirvana in fire season 1 and 2. Still awaiting for info on start of filming for nirvana in fire season 3.it goes backwards to the time before season 1.happy drama time to you

Hey Marcus, thanks for the latest info! My favorite Chinese costume drama thus far is Luoyang without a doubt! SSS is very interesting thus far as well. I’ve only seen 6 episodes of SSS but it has my attention. Production, script, direction and cast in both dramas have been outstanding to me. I love the pace and intrigue of Luoyang most of all. I don’t care about the ratings and depend heavily on recommendations of other viewers and channel personalities to provide new dramas for my list. Thanks Marcus for your recommendations as all the dramas you’ve shared with us such as Nirvana in Fire and Joy of Life we’re quite enjoyable. I’ve watched and enjoyed most of the dramas on the ratings list except for WOH and Duolou Continent. I’m looking forward to more great dramas next year as we are finishing this year on a high note with Luoyang and SSS. Enjoy the season Marcus and stay safe💃🏽

My fav costume drama is One and Only. Bai lu and Allen ren were outstanding in their characters. And fav modern drama is You are my glory. These two dramas were everything that i liked in these dramas. Chemistry was on fire🔥🔥🔥and plot was really brilliant with great cast. 😘😘😘😘😘😘 Other than these two i also enjoyed Crush, Imperial Coroner and Falling into ur smile very much. Unforgettable love and Fall in love were good too.

I'm really happy that Sword Snow Stride finally came out, because at least I get to see Zhang Ryo Yun while I'm waiting for Joy of Life to come back. I hope the Flying Tiger and Enemy come out with eng subs soon, but a part of me is expecting them not to 😢. The Sweetest Secret looks cute, I might watch that. Too many divorces this year, it's very sad.

Hi Marcus. I watched Word of Honor quite close to The Untamed and thought WoH overused the slow motion scenes, and considered it just ‘all right’. But after checking out other costumes drama in 2021, WoH still stands out to me. Even though I enjoyed Duoluo Continent very much, it has more entertainment value than content. And I’m getting loss more and more with Luoyang’s plot lines, and find myself hitting the skip button quite a lot. The cut videos of My Heroic Husband were very funny, so I still got that drama and The Imperial Coroner to catch up.

word of honor is a good drama to watch but honestly i thought the worst parts of the series were the action scenes. they were too short and i felt like zhang zhe han was the only one pulling his weight.

Hey, Marcus! Thank you for your updates as always. I started to watch SSS. I'm a bit confused with the character Xu Fengnian. Not sure if I like him. I'll have to watch more episodes. My top 3 are Douluo Continent, Luoyang and The Long Ballad. Actually, TLB is tied with The Imperial Coroner. Yang Mi's a smart shopper going for that sale. 😊 Poor Xiao Zhan! I know how that feels.
