I love the show "The Gilded Age" and I am very excited to see season 2 on its way! I worked at the Biltmore Estate for years and am still enchanted by the history of the Vanderbilts and the gilded age period of history!

My favorite character is Agnes Van Rihn. Hilarious, cutting dialogue, well delivered. Every once in a while, she shows some kindness.

She is non-prejudicial towards black people (Peggy in particular) to a fault. That can't be taken for granted in her time.

It is interesting that Julian Fellowes linked the inspirational stories of two separate families, Gould & Vanderbilt (who also had railroad investments), to create the Russels.

Following character development is intriguing - the costumes, the sets are fabulous.And, it is somewhat following real History. I don't find it frivolous in scenarios, like some period series turn me off with.

Ward McAllister's "The Four Hundred" list (published in the New York Times) was so influential it even reached the Philippines ("Manila's (First) 400" due to being a former American colony) and was probably the inspiration for the Wizarding World (Harry Potter universe)'s "Sacred Twenty-eight" (the British pureblood families) I also hope future seasons (if they ever cross into the 20th century) may feature a British family semi-inspired by "Downton Abbey"'s Crawley family (County of Grantham)

I loved this video. I was familiar with the Astors and Vanderbilts but not many of the other characters. I feel somewhat caught up. S1 was great. And I just watched S2 E1. It made me think that S1 was all prelude, getting me to know the characters, S2 E1 was able to hit the ground running. I liked it better than all of S1.

Awesome video; I'd like to see my great great uncle, Dr. Bishop R. S. Williams make an appearance. He was an associate of Ida B. and was the 6th bishop of the CME Church; he attended Wiley, Howard, and Yale and was born to a mixed heritage in Caddo Parish, Louisiana. He worked civil rights with W.E.B. DuBois, Booker T. Washington, and was friends with Adam D. Williams, grandfather of MKL Jr.

I think it was his father who went down with the Titanic. I read that he put his wife in a lifeboat, smiled at her and said he'd see her tomorrow. But he knew he was going down with the ship.

That snobbery as you so eloquently put it, still exists. I grew up in a family of new money and no matter how much wealth my father had, we were society outcasts among the people from old money. It is what it is.

What if any real life person is Agnes Van Rhijn inspired by? Me favourite characters are Oscar Ban Rhijn and Ward McAlister (Nathan Lane). Audra McDonald because she played Sara in the broadway musical Ragtime that I worked for. Worst character is George Russell. He really needs a good shave!! Why don’t they use the real names of the characters that they are inspired after instead??
@makicabrera
@makicabrera 10 ай бұрын
In the case of the Russells it's a blending of 2 historical figures/families (Jay Gould and the Vanderbilts) so that's probably why sometimes they use real names and sometimes they are made up!

There actually is a Jay Gould in the series. They don't get into him alot but they do have him in a few scenes with George Russell and he's remarked as being a very wealthy man. I think George Russell is more cast like William Kissam Vanderbilt
