I believe I've read somewhere that pirates actually wore eye patches so that one of their eyes was always used to the dark, making moving around below deck much easier.

The eye patch was for boarding a ship and going below decks. When they'd go below, they'd flip up the patch and thus have an eye already acclimated to the dark.

It was useful for that sure (tested it on Mythbusters) but some were probably one-eyed
@SketchpadWarrior5 жыл бұрын
Yep, that is for sure. There were undoubtedly one-eyed pirates. The funny thing is, I'm an artist and when I was getting my MFA in illustration, I studied Howard Pyle, the great illustrator from the late 1800s and early 1900s, who taught many illustrators who became legendary later on... Anyway, Pyle basically created the modern notions of how pirates dressed, etc., through how he illustrated his books. NC Wyeth, one of Pyle's students, also became influential in this. Even "Pirates of the Caribbean" used Wyeth and Pyle heavily in the costume and cinematography. So, as far as pirate wear and eye patches, I'm sure some of them used them for going below decks, and some of course used them because they were missing eyes!

#7: It's not just pirates who were amputees, it was sailors in general. The rigging of a large ship is a dangerous place. A sudden wind shift or a broken line could cause someone to be killed or severely injured by the ropes. Mythbusters disproved the idea that the whip of a rope was the hazard, but still a hand or foot could be sawed off by a fast moving rope.

Did you or the other 126 people who thought this comment was worthy of up vote, even see the video? The first item is the only one which relates to an actual pirate, namely the most feared, Edward Teach. Drake's mention was incidental to the distinction between buccaneers and privateers. It was not as you say top ten pirates, it only referred to the top ONE pirate and nine other facts thereafter. Morons.

ok good video but let me correct a few things, blackbeard has been thought to have named his ship because he was a privateer in Queen Ann's war, and just after the Charleston port hold up he purposely ran the revenge aground and made it look like an accident to his crew, he then marooned most of his crew on an island, so when Maynard the man sent to kill him attacked blackbeard was aboard a smaller sloop with around 8 guns. also buccaneer is derived from a French word (bo-can-ear) meaning a type of meat basically beef and pork jerky, now the people who made a business hunting and selling the meat to other ships where usually good maybe take a ship or two but that"s about it, now the Spanish thought that since they where the once who originally brought the animals to the Caribbean that it was their meat so the went after those people and in return they attacked and sacked many Spanish forts, so in essence the Spanish are the once who sparked the golden age of pirates.

The comment regarding a blunderbuss having to be fired from the hip is incorrect. The blunderbuss was simply a large gauge shotgun "smoothbore" with the barrel flared for easier reloading on a pitching ship or a coach. The sea borne guns were bronze or brass to prevent rusting. A 4 gauge blunderbuss was not unusual and can be fired from the shoulder without injury. I enjoyed the segment about Montbars, a good Frenchman!

Sirs , While on the whole I find your videos terribly well made , fascinatingly entertaining , and blindinly luminous I am compelled by justice to vehemently protest the validity of your Top 10 Pirates due to the conspicuous absence of Captain Jean Lafitte . A fierce creature of such unmatched prowess , power and prestige that one can scarcely believe the tale despite it's unassailable veracity . Cpt. LaFitte with the aid of his brother Pierre was a varitable King in the pestilenctial swamp in the Mississippi river delta south of New Orleans known as Barriterria Bay. He had such success plundering the cargo ships transiting the Gulf of Mexico that when the Governor of the Louisiana territory put a $500 bounty of his head Captain Lafitte responded by putting a $1000 bounty on Governor Claiborne's head ! He and his men where instrumental in the resounding American victory over the British at the Battle of New Orleans. Commanding the artillery with devastating effect only to be betrayed after the battle was won by future president and all around rascal , General Andrew Jackson . Jackson forced Lafitte out of his Barrateiria Bay stronghold in a most ungrateful manner after his service to the city of New Orleans and the fledgling United States. Captain Lafitte , not a the sort to be put off by a little thing like ingratouitous backstabbery , being a pirate and whatnot , promptly struck a deal with the Spanish where by Lafitte would act as an informal agent of the crown in any disputes regarding the disputed territory between the Sabine and Vermilion rivers in modern day southwestern Louisiana. The area was claimed by Spain , America and France . Declaring the area a "no man's land" the three agreed that none would garrison the area. Leaving it open to anyone that could hold it . With no meddlesome government to stop him Lafitte built a varitable wonderland of piratanical bliss on Galveston Island , TX. . He spent his efforts pilfering , plundering , and pillaging the Gulf of Mexico and presiding over the endless Bacchanalia of Pirvana until once again some anointed bink came along and booted the bollocks right off of the Captain's dream. Disconsolate , Captain Lafitte resigned to abandon Piratopia forever but not before he ordered the entire city of Galveston along with most his fleet burned or sunk and sailing away through the smoke never to be heard from again... Now , you tell me : With a story like that how in bloody blue Hell dosen't he make the top 10 Pirates !?! SO.... Amend ye scribbles , ye gaggle o' scurvied scoundrels else prepare thine souls for the setting of ye celestial sails !!

How about equal time for the ladies!! How about a video that highlights the daring of some of the women pirates? One such female that comes to mind for me is, Anne Bonny. Her name indirectly came to mind when I was watching an episode of the recent Tin Tin movie and there was mention of a pirate by the name of, "Rackham". She purportedly had a child by Rackham. He died (having been sentenced to death), she lived, became pregnant (purportedly) by him. She too was sentenced....the pregnancy apparently got her off the hook. Then not to long after this revelation she disappeared from all known written records. Mary Read is another female pirate. Hope you consider the suggestion. Thanks for the consideration.

Master and Commander has a great scene where the doc had to perform surgery on himself. True story.

Wasn't Blackbeard meant to be an enormous man? That would be scary enough by itself.

I don't believe the "Buccaneer Muskets" had a range of 300 yards. Lol.
@skrivbok8 жыл бұрын
Well... the bullet may reach that distance, that's possible - but the accuracy is practically zero with a musket if the target is further away than about 50 meters.

skrivbok Hence my point.

HighSpeedNoDrag muskets had pretty respectable ranges...

I could see them lining up a volley of ten or fifteen aimed at a helmsman of the opposite ship. Chances are that one would hit somewhere to wound or spook them off the helm. They probably didn't fire off a volley at 300 yards though.

Blackbeard's greatest weapon was his face because he would light burning ropes under his hat and he would look like a nut what's scarier than fighting someone you thought is crazy

The last pirate was not "hung" but rather "hanged." Common error.

Pirates, Buccaneers, Freebooters,and Privateers were entities WHOSE practices and predicaments, situations and circumstances would make which DESCRIPTION and DEFINITION appropriate and applicable to them. The one commonality amongst all of them is that they were seafaring " criminals. "
