IMO, Moorish Idols and Copperband Butterflies have a lot issues with Cyanide being used to catch these fish from the wild. Most of the time they will die even with high fiber diets. Now Elliot mentioned about his moorish being in juveniles stage. maybe they have a different ways of catching them at that stage, but at adult these fish are a huge gamble. they can make it out of QT eating healthy with lots of nori, and then flatline in a month.

I kept a group of 6 green chromis in a 75 gallon for several years with no issues. I wish I could take credit for the success but it was purely accidental and all down my a-hole flame angel. As Elliot alluded to here, the chomis stuck together to avoid being picked on by the angel and the angel wasn't brave enough to take on the group. I've since removed the chromis during a move to a bigger tank and the angel is back to being his top tier a-hole self.

I'm setting up a new 180. New to saltwater. I've binged BRStv. You 2 are my favorite guests Ryan has had. I haven't filled the tank yet. I'm concerned regarding the most basic stuff. How to mix the salt water and what to do if you don't have it right? How picky do I really need to be? I've had many fresh tanks and I learned that stability was way more important than chasing precise numbers. New to marine, though.

Personally i think moorish idols are very easy to get eating initially, almost all healthy ones I bought in the past all ate instantly. The hard part is to get them back up on their feet and get them thriving, mostly larger tanks and constantly feeding help a lot I think, the sponge frozen food in memory is from ocean nutrition, it has some sponge in it but its not cost effective and the amount of sponge is not going to satisfy the idols, so just keep feeding nori, hikari seaweed extreme or sometimes you can add some boiled wongbok or lettuce on a clip as well

Based on your discussion of spawning fish, can the two of you discuss ways to help do that in captive environments for those that are difficult in future episodes?

I had a hard time with Achilles tang because they were very small 2-3 inches and was so shy and would really eat so I purchased a 4”-6”which completely changed the outlook and 3 years later is 7” and a model citizen but they must must must have algae then you train them on whatever you want to feed them but from time to time it really like when I turn all 5 MP60’s on constant 100%

Awesome video Than and Elliot! Tons of excellent info and some real reality checks in here for the hobbyist. We need so much more of this. I hope it’s clear that Ryan at BRS often portrays a level of reef keeping that most people, including him and the pros he has on staff, are not really ready for or capable of. Also, there are LOTS of exceptions to the rule in the comments! Getting a lucky draw at the LFS and perhaps some above-average husbandry accounts for most of this success. The other 99% of those particular species died in transit, at the wholesaler, in the LFS or in a private aquarium if they made it that far.

Had Zanclus cornutus vor 2 years, sold him healthy due to eating my corals… prefered cyphastrea, acans, symph, but also monti and acro…very unproblematic if fed with algae and mysis mostly, 1000 ltr tank is to small btw. At wholesale they are fed with whole mussels Now i have acanthurus Achilles since 1,5 year, had little problems in the beginning, but now hes thriving🤷♂️ same like all other acanthurus, must have algae, must have space, and if possible no stress.

Great video. Would a UV-clarifier help with ich and other fish parasites (looking at the new sicce one) or would I need a UV-sterilizer?
@tidalgardens4 ай бұрын
There are formulas you can find with what you would need to sterilize the water for fish pathogens. It is a combination of water flow through the UV, the power of the UV, and the overall size of the system. To sterilize you want to have slower flow through the unit to maximize exposure to UV, but you need a large enough unit that you can get enough tank turnover volume at those lower flow rates.
@gocedimoski7284 ай бұрын
Yes, and also ozon helps a lot by reducing bakteria and parasites(larvae), better look for deltec or if possible wiegandt!

How do people feel about taking these fish out of the wild. I'm not too thrilled about it. I recently went snorkeling on the GBR and saw alot of big fat copperbands and it makes me feel awful that people are removing them and putting them in their aquarius (where they will likely die sooner than later). I guess work needs to be done on breeding them. Please choose captive bread over wild caught and leave these wild fish where they belong.

Silicone in aquariums. Does it really matter if it is pure silicone or silicone with "anti-fungal additives"? Has anyone tested it, and if so, is there a video on the results?
