The thing that makes games like Five Nights at Freddy's good is the fact that if you look hard enough... you will find unsettling things that reveal the story. What gets me about FNaF is that the characters- at least on my Kindle Fire First Gen (it's available on most appstores for a lower price than on computer)- look like real animatronics you would see in Chuck E. Cheeses. As I used to live in America as a little kid, I went to Chuck E. Cheeses, giving the game an even more unsettling quality to it.

Not to be a critic, but some of these, despite being good games, aren't necessarily horror, contagion especially. Just having zombies doesn't make anything a horror. Don't starve is too morbidly light hearted to be at all freaky and Limbo is just dark and gothic which isn't necessarily scary. I'm curious about the #1 though, so, I may check it out.

Actually I felt Contagion was a hugely necessary game in establishing the roots of zombies. Too many times zombies are used simply as just arcade-y shooty things with no real threat. Whereas in Contagion, each zombie is a threat in their own right.

Fair enough, but that still doesn't add to the fear factor of it. At no point do you really feel afraid when you're around the infected as you have a weapon to fix your issue one bullet at a time, and unfortunately we've been flooded with so many survival "horror" zombie games that I'm sad to say it's lost all possible effect with me and I'm sure a lot of others.

#1 is a lot scarier than he made it seem. As he said, it has amazing sound design. That goes for the creatures that inhabit the world, and the darker scarier areas of the apartment complex.

After seeing Markiplier's playthrough of every mode, I disagree completely; I mean, at least with Slender, you have a chance of getting away if you're caught. Plus, the claustrophobic experience of being trapped in one room overseeing a demented cross between Chuck E. Cheese's, Itchy and Scratchy Land (reference the Simpsons episode itself), and the Tunnel of Glove episode from Spongebob Squarepants makes for a whole new kind of psychological horror, IMO.

I think Five Night's is brilliant and clever, it's a shame it gets bashed about being dull and not scary, cos it really is the oposite. that fear of not knowing and if you fuck it up, you die. I really respect the game

Five Nights At Freddy's is only a cheap jumpscare game. It is so repetitive that it loses the "scary" aspect of it and it just becomes so boring to play. Honestly, that game never did scare me. Shouldn't be on this list.

TetchyEquation I think most people would find jump scares to be well... scary. But to say FNaF is a "horror" game is to say those stupid mazes that end in a jump scare are also horror games. And what of youtube videos that start off normal and end in a jump scare? Are those horror videos?

Technically yes But some people might find those scary and some wont You can play the game and not experience jumpscares you just have to not die I personally dont find the series scary at all but some will I like it because its fun the story is interesting and it has a great concept? Five Nights at Freddy's certainly deserved the top spot. It proves you don't need insane amounts of blood and gore to make a game scary. The sheer unpredictable of the game is what makes it terrifying. The sequel is even scarier.

Farrah Morris alot of horror games have too greater emphasis on sanity and not sleep, hunger, thirst, social etc. Lone survivor was like playing scary Sims with all the stats, and i loved it.

Lone Survivor also has a similar game called Claire. I think these kinds of games are underrated, since sound design, story, and player choice get skipped in terms of graphics lately. (And screw the mechanic of the plush cat I thought having someone to talk to was better than nothing but apparently it took venting to innaminate objects to reality issue level XD)

Now indie horror games aren't anywhere as good as they were, for example we had The Very Organised thief, the midnight game, one late night, Erie, Slender the Arrival and a lot more awesome games, I really wish we get awesome games like those in 2019

I just finished playing the Cat Lady and I have to say it deserves to be recognized in a top 5 horror list most definitely, probably the best Indie game story I've experienced next to, to the moon. Don't understand the hate for FNAF, I honestly couldn't play the second game I thought I was going to have a heart attack within the first 3 hours of night 1. Honestly any horror game fan calling it not scary is full of shit. It's given me more anxiety and fear then any horror game I've ever played and I've played MOST. Seriously though if you haven't played it, play the cat lady. It came out a few years back.

How is Don't Starve a horror game? Sure its eerie, but it doesn't really have the shock value that a horror game contains. I would call Don't Starve more mystery/suspense because of Maxwell's constant presence and the looming sense if doom. But that is just my opinion :3

Alot of these titles aren't really horror games in my opinion, the primary objective of a horror game is to terrify the player so well that they can't help coming back for more, most of these games are more unsettling than scary I've played most if not all of the games shown and it's safe to say you could've done far better with this list, I would've added a few more free games too for example vanish or dungeon nightmares

I think Don't Starve In general isn't as scary as the other games you named on the list. Its very fun but other that I've never had a jump scare or overall have been scared of the night. (Outlast scared the crap out of me though!)
