The cool thing about Moulin Rouge is that it doesnt feel like a Jukebox musical. If you are a teen watching the film for the first time it will full you and make you think its a musical with original songs. It happened to me when i watched it the first time. My second watch is when i took my mom to see it with me and she told me that songs already existed.

I call BS on this one. I would not count Happy Feet in this at all. If you count that, you have to count The Book of Life. Saturday Night Fever, they dont sing in it so you have to count all other dance movies. Also Moulin Rouge brought a resurgence to a then dead genre of film. Should be #1

2 of all my all time favourite movies Across the Universe and Moulin Rouge. My wife and I always sing Elephant Love Medley together on our Karaoke car trips. And Mama Mia is the last big movie I took my mom to watch before her Dementia hit. Happy and sad times. Thanks MsMojo.

Hairspray IS a really good film, but it isn't a jukebox musical. A jukebox musical is a musical that takes songs that were already written just as songs on their own and strings them together by adding a plot. Hairspray is just a regular musical, with original songs written for the purpose of being a part of Hairspray

Happy Feet is the best. This is a musical comedy that nabbed or took home the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature thanks to its amazing motion capture technology collaborating with computer animation and great film direction by George Miller. 1:44 Good thing for the dancing penguins making their way to the big screen. 🐧🕺🍿🎬 Least it's not a Pixar movie. Great work, Mr. Miller. And Animal Logic, thank you for working on your magic. The animation of the movie is amazing and wonderful. Way to make successful history. 👍👍👍👏👏👏

Singing in the Rain is not in this category. As mentioned, MGM recycled songs not previously used in movies, so this was definitely not a jukebox movie. It was a classic, one of the best musicals ever, but no one had heard these songs before the movie came out. Also, how was The Blues Brothers only a mention? It is THE BEST jukebox movie ever made.

Sister Act the movie, Priscilla Queen of the Desert (it's more of a musical than Saturday Night Fever). Purple Rain is not a Jukebox musical. I personally wouldn't call Singing in the Rain a Jukebox musical as it recylcled songs no one would recognize away from the film.

What I hate about 'Mamma Mia' is that all the songs sound exactly like the album versions - what's the point of that? I'm sorry, but some of these I would not consider "jukebox movie musicals"-- they don't sing in Saturday Night Fever, Jersey Boys was semi-biographical... I love Purple Rain to death, but it shouldn't have been on this list. It's almost a slap in the face cuz this genre is typically made fun of and made out to not be cool. Also, that movie is semi-autobiographical, so that should've been a disqualification from this list. (Also, you put Prince on any list- put him at #7 if he's not at the top of the list... it's his signature number like Purple is his signature color). With this title, I think of movies like Rock of Ages and Mamma Mia- and it felt like a lot of these were put in to pad the list to get you to 10 because not enough are out there to fill out a whole list.

Out of these movies on this list, I have only seen Happy Feet, Mamma Mia, Jersey Boys, Sing and Singing in the Rain. I mostly prefer musicals with all or mostly original score and enjoy Jukebox only once in a while. Depending on how familiar I am before with the songs.

Congrats for getting number one right - the best movie ever made and probably the original jukebox musical - before that was even a term. But you don't get what a jukebox musical is. It's a story that is built around an existing slate of songs - no original music. Often, but not always, they are by the same songwriter. Mama Mia started off the modern jukebox musical craze. Movies in this list that are not jukebox musicals: Purple Rain (all original music), Saturday Night Fever (mostly original music), Spice world, Blues Brothers and Jersey boys are pushing it because the musicals numbers in those shows are people performing music on stage for the sake of performance, not musical numbers that push a story forward. - ps - Rocks of Age and Mamma Mia stink because they used well known actors who are not singers - most of the singing parts of those shows are actually painful to watch because they are so bad.
