Surprising that Ken Rosewall made the list but not Rod Laver. I guess Rod had petered out by the 70's and Ken was on his last legs. These guys were all my heroes growing up. Neat video.

For me either Connors or Borg is ok as first, they are in a league of their own in the 70's. And Stan Smith is one of the most British looking American I have seen.

It's funny, because after 76 there was almost worldwide tv coverage, that's why they think that younger players were better than the others. They never saw Newcombe winning Wimbledon in 1971
@SuperHammaren
@SuperHammaren Жыл бұрын
@@hendrik19601 No, but I have (later) seen Borg winning Wimbledon in 76 without losing one set. 20 year old and Connors show what the new generation could do versus Rosewall in 74. So overall in my book the older continental grip player could not compete when covering the whole decade. Newcombe was a great player though and deserves recognition. As Rosewall and Laver.

There were many great players in the 70's, but Năstase is by far the most elegant and gifted. He was enjoying the game while the others were working and struggling on the court.

Raúl Ramírez was one of the steadiest players of the 70's and the owner, very aesthetically pleasing game. Certainly not top-10 but maybe honorable mention. Kind of the Tim Henman of the 70's.

I still have yet to see anyone hit as many winners from a backhand slice as Ken Rosewall. Attacking slice backhand just doesn't exist in today's game and his was the best when it did exist.

Your right Rosewall was past his best but he won more championships than Panatta and Orantes combined after the age of 35! That's the thing with Rosewall he won championships and a lot of them in the 50s 60s and 70s.

Vitas Gerulaitis over Manuel Orantes? That's a joke. Orantes reached No. 2 in the world versus Gerulaitis highest ranking of 3. Orantes: Same no. of Slams wins as Gerulaitis. Orantes: far more singles titles and singles wins than Gerulaitis. Orantes: Far more doubles titles and doubles wins than Gerulaitis. Additionally, Gerulaitis's Slam win was at the Australian Open, during an era when many of the top players didn't show up for that Slam. That said, a pretty good case can be made for Gerulaitis being inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame, which has yet to happen.

This is not the most well thought out list. But others have spotted that too. Where was Laver and Lendl (turned pro 78) and to leave McEnroe out with an honourable mention - insane.
@adrianboyddodd8007
@adrianboyddodd8007 Жыл бұрын
Only one of McEnroe's Seven Grand Slam titles was in the 70's in the 1979 US Open. The rest were in the 80's where he would be number one on most peoples list in terms taking the game to another level. So in think even an honorable mention for the 70's is a stretch. He was at that point in his career a potential great compared to the others who were proven greats by the time the 70's were over.

I don't know, there is a ranking, and what you do is only conversation. For example, one player who won 64 official single titles is ( according to you ) behind a player who won 29 titles !! And then, Connors ATP number one 74,75,76,77 and 78, behind Borg who was at the top of the rankings in 79 and 80 !!!
@SuperHammaren
@SuperHammaren Жыл бұрын
Well perhaps he count the largest tournaments the most? Borg has the most GS. He count GS as they do when they discuss the big three today. Connors first place in 77 and 78 was (and is) very debated also. As well as the value of the many small grand prix titles won by Connors.
