It's interesting that Kirby who wrote for some many comic book publications created the Eternals after New Gods. But if I'm not mistaken he wrote the New Gods for DC after he left Marvel. I think I remember reading that he originally was going to create the New Gods for Marvel after he created the inhumans, but due to some issues between him and Stan Lee. Also, I like the sleeves. Very cool. Kirby isn't recognized enough by either DC or Marvel. He probably created more characters for Marvel than Stan Lee but yet he isn't recognized nearly enough.

If I remember correctly DC and Marvel made a deal to allow the other to create a parody of JLA and the Avengers. Marvel created the Squadron Supreme; with Hyperian and Princess Power, and DC created a team that they didn't use until the 80's when they brought them in to Justice League International

I wasn't aware of any deal, but that does explain the lack of litigation... The Squadron Sinister first appeared as villains in Avengers #69 (cover dated Oct 1969). The Squadron was revamped as heroes and renamed The Squadron Supreme in Avengers #85 while the Champions of Angor appeared in JLA #87 (both cover dated Feb 1971).

The lack of litigation is because parody/homage is fair use. DC could sue Marvel, (or vice versa), but they can't win on the merits. Marvel can't make a literal copy of Superman, but they can make a character who is obviously based on Superman. They'd just have to change some of the details - which they have done.

You mentioned Hyperion and Power Princess, when most of this list could be members of the Squadron Supreme. The rest of the team (based on the 80s 12 issue mini series) is Nighthawk (Batman analog), Amphibian (Aquaman), American Eagle (Hawkman), Golden Archer (Green Arrow), Doctor Spectrum (Green Lantern), Whizzer (Flash), Lady Lark (Black Canary) and Nuke (Firestorm).

I would honestly be more concerned about Marvel having copied X-Men from the Doom Patrol, if Doom Patrol wasn't such a copy of Fantastic Four to start with. Which isn't to say I think DP copied X-Men, but that there are some concepts that are just very rich and easy to play with for different stories. I might have given Wolfman more credibility if he said he'd been inspired by Grace Kelly in It Takes a Thief. You should have said Squadron Sinister/Supreme instead of just Hyperion, then you would have had room to include the Imperial Guard as a knock-off of the Legion of Super Heroes.

The list is 'ok'. But let's not confuse potentiality with actuality. The Winter Solider/Red Hood rip-off doesn't count because Winter Soldier hit the stands first. The whole intent-and-changed at the last minute argument is irrelevant. You can only claim that the Winter Soldier was a rip-off of the Red Hood if character concepts were stolen by Marvel from DC behind the scenes. The author changing it because he wanted people to keep guessing essentially erases the whole rip-off angle.

Sentry isn't really a knockoff of Superman they are quite different in power set and characteristics. Hyperion and the Squadron Supreme/Sinister was a tribute to the JLA. Power Princess is a member but normally wore armor. Also the Eternals and the New Gods are very different and came from the same creator. I guess Kirby's distinct art style makes them seem the same but if you know the beginnings of both you'd think differently.

A Knock-Off is a cheap imitation and a Rip-Off is a stolen concept. Neither of those apply for The Eternals nor Hyperion. The New Gods was Kirby's continuation of a concept that Kirby was set to unfold in the pages of Thor. That was then continued in The Eternals and continued further in Captain Victory. This was how Kirby managed to hold onto his creations despite the circumstance that allowed non creators to hold onto intellectual property. Kirby had done this at least twice before with Captain America/Fighting American and Challengers of the Unknown/Fantastic Four. It's quite impossible to steal from yourself ... Try it sometime. A slightly different take on retaining ownership manifested itself when, fresh off his run on Legion of Super Heroes, Dave Cockrum brought with him a slew of unused character designs and costume redesigns meant for the Legion which resulted in The All New, All Different X-Men and The Imperial Guard. As for Hyperion... Roy Thomas doesn't deal in Rip-Offs or Knock-Offs. Roy Thomas deals in Lovingly Crafted Homages. Only a cynic would see it otherwise. Nobody, but nobody, ever loved comics and heroes as mush as Roy Thomas. His presentation of the Squadron Sinister/Squadron Supreme as a labor of love. Love for the JSA. Just as his melding of Rick Jones with Captain Marvel was in homage to Billy Batson and The Big Red Cheese. Many of his creations and revamps of existing heroes were done in that spirit. The Vision inspired by the Golden Age hero of the same name was an example of the former while his design of Yellowjacket as a recolored homage to The Fly was an example of the latter. While Power Princess was also a member of Squadron Supreme, she was created after Roy's involvement and I won't presume to speak of JM DeMatteis' or Don Perlin's motivations. Otherwise this was an entertaining presentation. Cheers!

There've been many more knockoffs (I prefer sincere flattery vs. ripoff's), going both ways. And not just of individuals but also of groups. One of my favorites (because I was a fan when he first appeared - yeah, old guy) is Brin Londo, aka Timberwolf, who most (all?) agree "influenced" wolverine, ten years later, not just in powers but also in costumes and hairstyle. (I think, many think.) As always thank you so very much for the videos. (I I was a Top 10 fan/subscriber before there was "Me, Amanda", but if I weren't already a subscriber, I'm sure I'd be one. I doubt xmen was inspired by Doom patrol. It was too close, and the comic was almost called the mutants. Norman Osborn was a last minute reveal, because ditko and Stan disagreed on who he should be. Luthor wasn't a businessman until long after goblin debuted, though the Joker comparison isn't bad. I somehow didn't realize wade and slade Wilson were so close, because I rarely read dc. I think that's hilarious. Robin and Bucky have such a strangely similar sidekick history.

Monarch in the *_Armageddon 2001_* Summer crossover series of 1991 was going to be Captain Atom, but then DC found that too many readers had deduced that he was Captain Atom, so out left field they changed him to Hawk. It was a stupid decision which has had a number of bad results since. I think the lesson to take from this and from the double-reverse of the "Hush" storyline is not to try to change the Big Reveal of a story just because it isn't as much of a shocker as you thought it was going to be.

The Doom Patrol/X-Men connection is well established and I'm not going to argue against it, but I see a greater connection between the Doom Patrol and the Fantastic Four. Conceptually, Robotman is basically the same as The Thing. They are both the muscles of their respective team. Both are no longer human and are essentially monsters in their own view. Negative man and the Human Torch have the same powers to some extend : they can pass as human (only to some degree in the case of Larry Trainor) and can transform into "energy beings" able to fly. Elastic-Girl and Mr. Fantastic are both rubber band characters using the same power differently. Reed Richards is himself a rip-off of Plastic Man and Elongated Man. Rita Farr also plays the same role as Sue Richards in the team, but I agree that the Invisible Woman powers are unique (meaning that she has no counterpart in the other team). The Chief and Reed Richards are both geniuses in their respective fields, but I guess every team needs one genius to come up with brilliant plans to fight the bad guys and manage the group. Storywise, I think that confining Niles Caulder in a wheelchair works. He's the human element of the Patrol (the only one who doesn't see himself as a freak) and he may be a genius, but he has no power himself so he needs a team. Quite often The Chief is depicted as having a dark side, but so is Mr. Fantastic is some story lines when he acts without explaining himself before (neutralising the powers of his own son and risking Franklyn life in the process comes to mind). It's tough being the smart guy. 😉

The problem you run into it this is because artistic Creations can be similar or almost exact well-being conceptualized independently... I think about that in music where two different musicians can come up with exactly the same rhythm, but the one who uses at the first is defined as the originator. I’ve always felt the original X-men’s powers could have some inspiration from Superman. 1️⃣Freeze breathe = Iceman, 2️⃣Heat Vision/ (original solar absorption) = Cyclops, 3️⃣Strength Agility Durability = Hank, 4️⃣Flight = Angel, 5️⃣Golden Age Telepathy/Telekinesis = Jean Grey.
