For me, I can't NOT include Shadow Complex on a top Metroidvania. First, it's true Metroidvania where you unlock more powers to unlock more areas of the sprawling map, but also, one of the sweetest progressions in Metroidvania. You literally go from jeans and t-shirt to a near invincible super suited badass.

You should try Hollow Knight. It's by far the best Metroidvania I've played so far and it includes a huge amount of content.

RAG's Top eight Metroidvanias, along with an action shooter and a roguelite. LA-MULANA deserves a spot on any best-metroidvania list. I also highly recommend Hollow Knight. Treasure Adventure World was just released for PC a few months ago, and so far it is pretty good, though I have not beat it or made it as far there as I have in the original game, TAG.

Rogue Legacy is a rogue-lite Metroidvania and really, REALLY deserves to be in the list. Although I have not played Axiom Verge for more than 5 minutes combined, it deserves first place, hands down; I have never felt like playing a genre (Metroidvania) for the first time as much as I did playing Axiom Verge.

Lol, you talked about Shantae and the Pirate's Curse but over half the footage you showed is from Risky's Revenge. That's almost as funny as excluding Shadow Complex and Ori and the Blind Forest while you include two non-metroidvania games. Rogue Legacy is a rogue-like with platforming, that's it. Muramasa is a beat'em-up.

If anyone hasn't played Magicians and Looters, go now! It's probably the best indie Metroidvania I've ever played, and might be better than most big name Metroidvanias out there (depending on your preference)

I just played Cave Story after seeing it high up on these best Metroidvania lists and I was pretty underwhelmed with it. It was much smaller and more simple than I was expecting after seeing it on these lists. It was pretty much just a straight platformer where you had to go back and do previous stages again. Like there was no getting lost or anything like that. There were some side quests and multiple endings but it was pretty minor.

I actually have Muramasa and Dust: an Elysian Tale free on PS+. I didn't realise they were Metroidvanias. I should give them a go. Guacamelle is fantastic. The PS4 version has a new area and boss / character, so worth another go. Mutant Blobs Attack and Severed by the same developer, Drinkbox, are great games too.

The PROcrastinator muramasa is really light on the metroidvania elements. its a connected map but the only thing hindering your progress are colored barriers. theres no real techniques you learn like in Metroid or SOTN that help you get further. its still a GREAT game tho.. but it focuses on combat more. the platforming is an after thought and you wont be wowed by the level design. Dust is a very fun game and forsure mirrors the classic formula. i got 100% on it after two weeks. defo worth the play through for both man
