I don't know how true this is, but when Piazza got elected to HOF with Griffey, they were the highest (Griffey) and Lowest (Piazza) drafted players to ever be elected

He likely won't be a hall of famer, more like hall of very good. But I've admired Kevin Kiermaier for years now. 31st round pick from a little known college. Went on to be the best center fielder for a solid 6 year period, multi gold glove winner, platinum glove winner. One of the best all around players in the Rays franchise history. To me the Outlaw deserves an honorable mention and tip of the cap.

I disagree with putting Piazza number one though I understand the thought process behind it. Just to me, the difference in value of a draft pick in the 10th round versus the 20th+ round is so small that a guy like Ryan or Pujols represents a much bigger draft steal than Piazza.

If you consider he did what he did as a catcher it makes sense, plus 52 rounds is a lot. If pizza is 1B or DH he’d have way more impressive stats

OK so small correction about the famous Mike Piazza 9/11 home run. It wasn't the first game back from the tragedy. They had already played a few games in Pittsburgh prior to the series against the Braves. But that was the first game back in New York in the aftermath.

Dallas was the Fightins farm director and led them to the 1980 World Series as manager. He got a chance to run the show In Chicago and proceeded to pick the Phillies dry to build a playoff team in 1984. He was they who drafted most of them - Ryno, George Vukovoch, Dick Ruthven, etc.

I know he'll never be a Hall of Famer but Kevin Pillar was a LATE round pick, who has had a pretty good MLB career. The Bluejays only drafted Pillar to be a player to fill out their minor league rosters

I said first HAS to be Piazza. When I was a kid we went to Vero Beach to see a Dodger spring training game. Piazza left in the 5th inning. He started jogging, to what I assumed was the clubhouse. A couple other kids and I saw him start running. We trailed behind. Mike! Mr. Piazza!! He slowed down a little. It was us few kids and Mike Piazza. He turned while still at a trot. Looked me dead in my little kid eyes and said, "fuck off kid" and took off. We were all pretty stunned to say the least. 😂 Guess he was having a bad day. Lol

I think the reason Mattingly and Hernandez aren't in the hall of fame is because they are not prototypical 1st basemen. They were as good with the glove as they were with the bat but weren't know for their power (even though Mattingly had more than he was given credit for). If you say : all time great contact hitter + elite defender with a bunch of gold gloves, it should be an automotic hall of fame induction, but apparently not for 1st basemen. Maybe if Todd Helton makes it, Hernandez and Mattingly would be reconsidered

How about make a top 10 (or more) of MLB players who were undrafted or rookie free agents? Guys like Fernando Tatis Jr. of Dominican Republic and Johan Santana of Venezuela who were signed as international free agents at a young age, Ichiro Suzuki of Japan as a rookie free agent.

Considering that would, for the most part, be the "best non-US (or Canadian and US territories from 1991) players it kind of loses a lot of weight. You would probably want to do a few lists to cover them (those who fell through the draft, players from NPB, and general international signings at least)

I agree Kent deserves to be in the HOF but he wasn’t likable during his career (yees, that shouldn’t matter) and that works against him with the BBWAA. I believe he’ll be inducted by a future Veteran’s committee.

Pretty sure Kirby Puckett was super low in the draft also. Kirby was Minnesota baseball.

Not really. Puckett was drafted under slightly different circumstances than most players these days. He was drafted in the first round, just not in the standard draft we are used to. He was drafted third over all in the January Draft which was a draft set up for players that graduated in the winter. This draft was discontinued sometime around '86 or '87. My mom actually used to work with his sister and he went to college just down the road from where I live.

The big negative in Smoltz's career is that he was in the rotation with Greg Maddux, the greatest modern era pitcher of all time, and Tom Glavine, among the best lefty starters of the 90s. Smoltz is a great #2 righty. Gives you wins, innings, keeps you out of the bullpen. I forgot how much I respect that arm.

You should be encouraged by a look at his second half; after an abyssmal first half, Javy actually slashed .268/.310/.413 once he acclimated to Detroit. I'm a Cubs fan and I believe he's capable of figuring it out and finding his pop there. Unfortunately there's not much hope for his plate discipline, but if he can tap into his game power again, with development from Haase, Greene, and Torkelson, that team could cause problems in a weak division.
