Still my favourite fantasy series to this day. I remember seeing the behind the scenes of the Aunt Marge balloon effects, and being really impressed.

It's crazy to think that most of those practical effects are from the first three movies... and they are effects that actually made the first movies so... well, magical. The fact that an animatronic of Fawkes was able to trick many it was a real bird... and the fact they made an animatronic of the basilisc that looks extremely realistic... Not to mention how they managed to make Hagrid look like an actual half-giant on screen, inflate aunt Marge or make Moody's magical eye... And let's not forget about iconic scenes like the letters or the wizarding chess... Wow! Just... wow!

I love practical effects more than a CGI shows how creative people were before technology advanced as well as giving a more realism to the situation than pretending there's something there.

I totally thought the basilisk was 100% CGI. What a fantastic puppet effects crew they had!

If you know what to look for you can spot it very easily what is cgi and whats animatronic. Its kind of the textures in the skin and the teeth and the headmoves in this case with the basilisk. The middel and the tail shots its to smooth in movement to be a animatronic (plus at the time cgi wasent so smooth/lifelike in movements yet) where animatronics give these small movements that sometimes gives a "motor-like" hault to them. You can see exsample of this in jaws 1, jurassic park 1, and with the phonix in hp 1. This is also why i miss the practical effects because if you have a good mix between practical and cgi effects they will do magical things, plus some effects are just better in real life than cgi.

Man, practical effects and pre-2012 CGI was so much better than a lot of the CGI we see today in a lot of big movies (I’m looking at you superhero movies)

"Harry Potter" is the best fantasy movie of all time. All eight works from ``Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone'' to ``Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2'' were really interesting. I would like ``Harry Potter and the Cursed Child'' to be made into a movie as well.

we need more films to go back to props and not always do the CGI way, this shows how much heart and soul go into film making. I went to the studio tour and when I saw Aragog I was fascinated and scared at the same time

Son Ron's actor actually is afraid of spiders? I didn't know some of these effects were practical. I thought the giant beasts are fully CG. If it can be done without CG without too much issues then go practical. Not sure why Devilman in the live action Devilman needed to be CG when his in-between form appeared to use prosthetics. They should have used a full costume instead since he looked like a video game character and fake looking.
