The ever spectacular Simola HillClimb once again delivered a tremendous spectacle with plenty of High Powered, bewinged Monsters battling for the "King of the Hill" title. From 1000+Hp Nissan GT-R units, V8 Supercar beasts, plenty of Engine Swapped Lotus Exiges, be it Ferrari powerplants, Honda Turbo, VR38DETT and even featuring Active Aero. Here the term HillClimb Monster is truly put to the test, and this is how they stacked up in the end:

Pieter Zeelie & his MR-S will always be my favorite driver/car combo. Will never forget when he won Simola a few years back. "The Sheriff" and its big front mounted Wing reminds so much of Chris Rado's Time Attack Scion tC circa '09 though. Such a radical look, and wind tunnel data back then proves its effectiveness.

i hate to point out , these are municipality maintained roads, just a few years ago that was a gravel bush path going up that hill , that you needed a 4x4 to go up. i think the porpoising is from road undulations , that actual tarmac is not think, a few thin layers on top older clay/gravel roads.

@@jonathandalton2921 yeah I completely understand that these are not fully prepped race tracks that they are competing on, definitely going to be way more bumps and undulations, but it certainly seemed like an aero problem with the lotus rather than bumps comparing it to the other competitors. Not to take anything away from what an amazing car and build it is though

the sheriff was absolutely nuts. 1600hp and 2600lbs is just crazy. definitely needed that front mount wing and it made it look awesome as well. not only that one but that 800+hp lotus weighing only 1800lbs probably felt like he was getting sent to heaven going around those corners good lord!

Regardless of the overall standing, that R34 looked like it was seriously hauling! I was beginning to wonder if a cloud of asphalt would be rolling up the hill behind it by the end. Lots of quick cars in this one too, but that one was the standout for me.

With all respect (as a motosport enginer) the lotus (x a few)apart frm the last one) need FAR more suspension travel to ensure the tires are in constant (within reaaon) contact with the tarmac/less bottoming out/splitter hitting. Its easy to check out the N24 Porches who drastically increase suspension travel to improve stability/driveability (Mathenthy et all) from stock etc. But great cars, loving the engineering efforts from all competitors

With the levels of downforce they are running wouldnt it be redundant at high speeds to have more travel if it is just getting shoved into the bottom of the travel anyway at any higher speed than the start?

The Exige with the Honda minivan motor is my jam; that same J35A4 is what I'm planning on putting in my Series II NA Miata. Tiny car + grocery-getter power is no joke! My output goal with a turbo is only around 400bhp or, more likely, whatever I can make at 10psi or less. I think I'm going to cut part of the trunk out to accommodate a rear-mount snail that keeps waste heat out of the (cramped) engine bay.

The Ferrari powered Lotus kind of sounds like a crossplane V8 at some points, might be due to the turbo and headers setup

Iirc the Maserati engine you’re talking about technically is a Ferrari engine (F430 or whatever designation they gave it) with a different crank.
