I don't get panic attacks often. Not to a point where I'd be immediately aware of what is happening. That makes it so much more terrifying, because I get confused and scared about what's wrong with me and what's happening. Vertigo, dizziness, confusion, fear, hyperventilation, nausea... and fear of humiliation on top of everything, so inability to ask for help or notify anyone that I'm having a panic attack.

Mine wasn’t even triggered by a specific event; I was under a ton of situational and reflected stress. Just sitting on the toilet minding my own business when it felt like my body was trying to turn itself inside out and all my muscles were contracting but I was extremely lucid and aware of the pain; I tried to focus on breathing because I truly couldn’t do anything else to keep from freaking the fuck out. It really was scary especially since my partner walked in and I couldn’t even stress what was happening because I didn’t know and he just walked back out assuming I was having a bad tummy ache or something. /:

This is all Satan deception to make people mind go crazy and he is #1 deceiver..1Peter5:8. Next time you find yourself starting to let fear into your thoughts, remember that God is with you always. This is His promise to those who live within His will. I pray to you all to seek kingdom of God and tell Satan, “I will rebuke you and accept Jesus Christ,”. Keep doing this daily and he will leave.n Satan is an isolator so think positive as of today. You can do it and live a new life in Jesus. Be with the believers of Christ in churches even though there’s no perfect people there but trust and read the Bible...focus on the book, not people but stay around them. “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” -Isaiah 41:1 This theme of “Do not fear, for I am with you” is something we can hold onto firmly. It is one of the absolute core messages of the Bible. The only question that remains is whether or not we are going to live our lives believing the truth that God is with us. Read the Bible which Satan hates and he will flee. People who isolate themselves it is satan’s tactic and he’s doing a great job of doing that to you. Don’t let God’s love be taken from you as Jesus is waiting and ask Jesus to come into your life now. John 4:7 says....”I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. Hope you read the Bible...don’t go down, instead towards God and you’ll find peace and love no matter what trials we face...🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽😇

YES! THIS! I have complex PTSD from childhood abuse and traumatic loss at a young age. However, I am also an Army veteran and people automatically assume my PTSD is combat related. I have broken down an explanation system that my psychiatrist thinks is pretty accurate and comprehensible for lay people. I explain there are three "categories" of PTSD. The most recognized is combat related PTSD, which is pretty self explanatory. The second is incidental or acute PTSD. Survivors of single or short term trauma fall into this category. Rape survivors, serious accident survivors, witnesses to murder or other violent crime, etc. fit into this category. Finally, there is complex PTSD, which is finally a real subdivision recognized by mental health professionals. Abuse survivors are the main group who suffer from C-PTSD- people who have been exposed to severe trauma over an extended period of time. Child abuse survivors, domestic violence survivors, sexual abuse survivors, etc. We all lived through a long period of abuse, usually at a time when we were extremely vulnerable to the abuser, e.g. a parent, spouse, relationship partner, or authority figure. All three categories have different triggers and different recovery. Also, we have a mental injury, not a mental illness. Usually the actions of another person, people, or a resulting situation caused harm to our brains. The worst part, at times, is dealing with the "If I can't SEE your injury, it doesn't really exist" people. I went to law school and it is rampant with those people.

Jo P. That is a great way of explaining it. I‘ll use that in the future! I also suffer from Complex PTSD and currently live in Austria where it seems people are even less informed and open about mental health issues than in the US. Here I never get the combat question, just always the usual „But how can a boyfriend rape you? That doesn‘t work. You‘ve given consent before when you had sex“ which is like a punch in the face every single time.

Tony's depiction of anxiety could not be more accurate. My sister suffers from anxiety so bad she can't have anyone touch her or be around her when she has an attack. She becomes angry, frustrated and tends to snap at people due to the fact she is so wired. She becomes hypersensitive (But doesn't like human contact in general). She has to be alone until she calms down and comes back to rationality again. But when she does, she apologizes and seeks out those she snaps at. Though she still needs her space again after snapping

I legitimately started crying at hearing Bojack's inner monologue about breakfast. I had a depressive episode a few months ago, and still slip back into that mindset every now and again, and sometimes the only reason I would eat at all was because my brain told me I didn't deserve to feel sorry for myself. Hearing Bojack's own mind say that to him was like listening to Will Arnett narrate the thoughts in my head. Is it weird that it's almost comforting knowing I'm not the only one who has those thoughts? That those thoughts are so common that a cartoon horse can accurately depict them?

What I've learned is that there a many different voices. For me, there's the depression, that tell me I don't deserve an inch of what life is giving me. Then there's anxiety, which constantly worries about perceptions. Any perception, really. From really small stuff, to paranoia. And the one that usually keeps them in line is my logic. So that's the voice I listen to the most. There's always that small, small voice that I have to strain to hear that is positivity. For me, it's like my logic's sidekick. It helps to move me forward and anytime my mind gets chaotic, it helps me focus again on what I find important. It's all about constantly finding balance. And shit... It's exhausting, but at the end of the day so worth it.

don't all Superheroes have mental illnesses? I think if I was Spiderman as a teen I might go "crazy" having his secret plus having the ability to climb up huge buildings. i agree completely however where i disagree with is the brushing over tony's ptsd, he still has it but im betting being a mega-naire and genious he has found a way to cope with it, plus the fact that he is iron man it helps his mind push it asside in order to complete the tasks at hand, however i think with the end of infinity war his recovery will be set back.
@kitdubhran2968
@kitdubhran2968 6 жыл бұрын
andycuttie I think it's less brushed aside and more expressed differently. Anxiety and worry about protecting the world led to the idea of having something to protect everyone from what he saw out there, which later led to Ultron. He has anger management issues, and a tendency to react with snap decisions no matter what's going on, which can be caused by his ptsd, and anxiety, or any of a dozen other mental illnesses and disorders (my ADHD certainly causes me emotional blow ups). Throughout Spider-Man he regularly pushes peter away, and tries to force him to do simple less-dangerous things, because he's worried both that peter will do something dangerous and get killed, and also that simply being near Tony would be dangerous. Some of the reactions he has during civil war are very anxiety- and guilt-driven, and also his snap reactions to stressful situations. (Less about just his anxiety and more about the host of other issues he has, ptsd, Howard Stark's A+ parenting, etc) Then I just keep seeing the moment toward the end of Infinity War, after Peter. Where he just sits there, and holds his hands, and breathes. Because he's been dealt a shitty hand, yet again. But he's still here and has to clean it all up, or die trying, yet again. And so even while his world is sort of collapsing, he just has to push through, get back up, and get shit accomplished. Grand scheme, I think that Tony's mental health issues aren't getting brushed off, but he's developing coping mechanisms for them which make them either appear better or present differently. (Long comment is long.)

I get it’s a really important coming of age story for a lot of women but it saps a lot of the ambiguity and depth out of the memoir. They actually cut scenes where Susannah has some truly scary dissociative moments that were in the book she has to grapple and put into the story of her life. What’s left in is “I don’t wanna be normal! Leave me alone you fascists.” “But Susannah, what if… you chose to get well instead?” “Oh, ok!”

say what you want about Shameless, but Ian's bipolar is portrayed very well. from what it can be like to not take your meds, and the destruction that causes, to the way Ian doesn't feel like himself when he's on them, i think he should've be mentioned on this list. also Eli's bipolar is so well done that in my theater class when our teacher asked us to find monologues on mental illness and preform them, i went straight to Eli's play. You should've had Ian Gallagher from shameless (US). His bipolar disorder was very accurately portrayed and had a victim's POV to the pills and diagnosis in which, in the end, he accepts that it's who he is. You, also, should've had to the bone. The entire movie is about people with eating disorders recovering and proving that life is worth living.
@cass.n.m
@cass.n.m 5 жыл бұрын
Laura Cronin I can't speak for others but I found To The Bone completely inaccurate based on my experience of eating disorders. No ED treatment centre I've been to has ever treated the disorder by telling patients to just eat what they want, and that as long as they're gaining weight (or losing weight, in the case of the character with binge eating disorder) they're recovering. Getting to a healthy weight doesn't equal recovery from an eating disorder and I found the film really misleading in that sense.

All of these depictions of "Bipolar" are *only* Bipolar I. Bipolar II should have its own name so people wouldn't misunderstand when I tell them I have it. I don't get psychotic, I don't have delusions, I don't get mania but my mood disorder is still real, serious, and often debilitating: chronic depression interspersed with "dysphoric hypomania" characterized by intense agitation, sensory oversensitivity, and irrational irritability. godsandmonsters I hate to be the “but actually” guy, but actually... Elliot doesn’t suffer from schizophrenia. Yes, he does experience hallucinations, and suffers with delusions and paranoia, but Elliot experiences the hallucinations through either knockouts (see S1 E4 as an example) or through drug usage (see S2 E3 as an example). Even though he suffers from delusions and paranoia (which are both symptoms of schizophrenia), they are not enough reasons for Krista (Elliot’s therapist) to diagnose Elliot with schizophrenia. But, Elliot does suffer with multiple personality disorder (or dissociative identity disorder) which is shown by Elliot’s interactions with Mr. Robot, as (spoiler alert) it is established in S1 E9, Mr. Robot is a personality that Elliot processes. Sorry for the lengthy paragraph, I’m just really passionate about the show. Totally agree with you on the other points though. It’s one of the most best depictions of mental health I have seen in forever. :)

In #10 you said he was diagnosed with a Panic Attack. Then the character in the movie says "you had an Anxiety attack". These are two completely different diagnoses!!! People think they are the same thing, but they aren't. A panic attack is where you feel impending doom, you feel like you are on the verge of death and no one can help you. An anxiety attack is the loss of control in a situation and you are powerless to get control of your emotions. The best way I can think of to describe it is you are falling from the sky and reaching out trying to grab tree branches to help you and you just can't touch them. But, you don't have the fear of dying. **My husband is diagnosed with severe panic disorder. I am diagnosed with anxiety and have anxiety attacks.

Dealing with serious mental illness(es) for over 20 years, I tend to be a little more open-minded about the huge range of depictions of them. Despite HOW successful these portrayals may be, I try to at least understand WHAT the piece was trying to achieve, and what value it may or may not have for both sufferers and the greater public. But this sh*t...this sh*t. . I don't even know where to start - almost nothing genuine, productive, or even just good comes out of this type of garbage. Mental illness is already super stigmatized and we all struggle, not just with our own crap...but with everyone else's judgment and fear. And this is tricky, painful, damaging stuff...nothing more so than suicide. Suicide and self-harm are known to come in 'clusters' or influence others to 'follow suit' - it's a real thing, and thus if a show is going to enter into that territory, it better come real f*cking right. So, if a show is going to pin its entire premise around suicide, it has a huge responsibility. It could be a great platform for exploring suicide and helping. It can't be exploitive garbage that uses real people's suffering to capitalize on drama. So, again, this SH*T! Not only does this demean people who are dealing wither with mental illness or those suffering alongside them, it actively courts ACTUAL death, by sensationalizing young pretty people dying young and pretty. All this crap does is (1) hurt people that are already suffering (2) create more fear and confusion for everyone and (3) in all likelihood, CONTRIBUTE to rather than reduce teen suicides. Honestly - F*CK this show.

Claire Danes is brilliant in Homeland, I already loved her in Temple Grandin, but I’ve a whole another level of respect for her after seeing her depiction of bipolar. Very very well done! I am surprised that Beautiful Mind and Girl Interrupted aren’t on the list. I so appreciate filmmakers and their empathy for those with mental illness... I would bet that some of their works of art have saved lives out there.

These may show mental illnesses accurately but, not as accurate as they should. These people are all able to function with their illnesses. Most of us... Are NOT! We struggle every day to just get out of bed, let alone hold a job, take care of a home or even basic hygiene. We feel alone in a crowd of thousands and overcome in a room with one other person and all exits closed. We continually scream inside our own minds while struggling to communicate externally. We sleep for 26 hours and then don't for 72 or more because our minds won't be quiet enough to let us. We have nightmares that we never quite awaken from and never EVER feel real peace, love, joy, pleasure, or happiness. Colors are either to bright or have a slight tinge of dullness to them as do sounds, textures, scents, emotions. Everything we eat tastes tainted, everything we touch seems to wither and die. Pain, fear, loneliness, and heartbreak are the only things that REALLY ring true and, even those emotions are all too biting. When you find a movie, even an actor/actress that can convey all of this, THEN you will paint an accurate portrait of mental illness!

Jenn Worthington ~ You are the first person that I feel who truly understands. Your words made me cry, not out of sadness but out of relief, to feel that there is someone else on this planet who knows, who gets it. You have pulled out the jumbled words stuck in my head and made them so clear and comprehensible. (I couldn't express anything... wasn't allowed to. I'd look too weak or be mocked.) Thank you for writing this. You blessed me today!

Jenn Worthington, I didn't realize that until you said it. That is pretty true. There are a ton of people who suffer from mental illness and can't even function. When they make a show with a character like that, let me know.

Define functional because a lot of these characters listed went through what you've described. Also I went through a lot of what you've described and I thought I was pretty functional since I had no problem keeping a job and was pretty good with paying my bills. I always made sure to do just enough to not have anyone ask me any questions. Also a lot of these people self medicate with alcohol and other drugs so where do they stand on the functional/nonfunctional scale?

Legion is one I honestly think ye missed. Yes the main character has superpower s but he also has schizophrenia and the way they handle it is all too realistic. The show itself, the second season in particular when looked at in its entirety really conveys what goes on in the head of someone with such a mental illness. The voices, the delusions and the one that never goes away... The irrational thinking. It also seems to be one big Marvel themed homage to Syd Barrett himself even naming one of the main characters after him and playing some more recognizable notes and extractions of his. Good job on the rest of the list though. And it may be a bit more extreme but The Machinist, Black Swan, Hannibal (the show), A Beautiful Mind and Pi are just some others I might suggest in a list as both TV and Film seem to deserve a respective list.

I'm so glad that mental illness is being portray in movies/tv. Its important that we erase the stigma behide it and know its a normal thing. Im almost 30 and I've dealt with depression most of my life. Also being suicidal. It wasnt until I was 25, when I finally acknowledged it even though I wasnt diagnosed until last year 2017. My depression comes from experiences in my childhood, and mental and emotional turmoil I've experienced throughout my life. I didn't choose to be depressed, or negative, it's my brain and the thoughts that enter it. I didn't choose to be stressed out, or being disrespected at work, or having those little voices in the back of my mind saying I suck and that I'll never be happy, crying no reason or being so upset that your in a fog of pain and can barely get out of bed. Depression isn't my own doing, but if I deliberately act out on my pain and hurt others, refuse to get help, being in the company of enablers or engage in activity that contributes to an early demise, than I become the problem. Depression is something that I have, a mental thing that I'm coping with, but it doesn't define me. It's not my friend, or my family. It's not a state that I strive in live in, it just a illness that I trying my damnest to manage. I may not overcome it overnight, but acknowledging that it's there and constantly working towards being a positive, better me is overcoming depression.

I have Bipolar Disorder and it's weird how you don't know what you are in that moment. It's like you are there, but not. Mood swings take over and by the end you can't have an anxiety attack cause of how you acted. It's hard especially due to the fact that it varies from person to person. Silver linings play book does a good job. The whole talk about meds is accurate. You just want someone to talk and yell it out and make fun of it while not acting like an ass.

Yes!! I have BPD and Crazy Ex Girlfriend portrays it so well. Sometimes I get stressed and I have to stop watching it because her decisions are SO MUCH like something I would do. BPD is really often stigmatized, even within the psychiatric community a lot of therapists don't want to treat it because they're considered like "problem patients". Also people with BPD are often seen as abusive and bad people, which is why I was so excited to get my diagnosis as well, but Rebecca isn't treated in that light she's someone who makes rash emotional decisions, not someone who is intentionally trying to hurt those around her.
