I watch Kitchen Nightmares all the time, but the one with Amy and Samy is the only episode I refuse to watch ever again. They were absolutely vile. If I were Ramsay, I would have walked away the first day.

But charring romaine leaves actually adds an interesting flavor to salads. It is no different than people grilling zucchini, onions, peppers, & tomatoes. It is done all over northern Italy for antipasto salads. It was a foreign concept to Gordon at the time which made him shocked at the practice of grilling the romaine.
