in July of 2020, I visited the USS Texas, and was able to secure a three hour-personal tour by the restoration head. I'll say this, at the time I visited her, the only threat to her continued existence was the fact that she was having trouble securing drydock space DUE TO THE PANDEMIC. that's not to say there isn't a lack of funding, as there always is a lack of funding for these vessels. it's the nature of the beast, I'm afraid. The Texas Tribune has a good article about it and even Drachinifel talked about it having catastrophic flooding. @BillBaronas3 жыл бұрын
I am an ocean liner fan as well as a warship fan, and I can say that Queen Mary isn’t in danger due to a lack of a market so much as she has been the subject bureaucratic arguments as to who is responsible for financial support for maintenance. She is owned by the city of Long Beach and has been leased and operated by a number of real estate companies. During this time, inspectors have been fired by the operators for exposing major issues in their reports, and lease disputes over funding responsibilities have really put a damper on repairs, which are becoming exponentially expensive from ongoing neglect. It is very sad to watch preventable problems pile up while different organizations fight over them.

I would argue that the state of the Mary is the fault of Long Beach, once you know more on the process of her conversion and the way she is run. Her conversion was half done, and all of the amenities that she was to have was not put in, affecting her at her opening and rippling down all the way to today. There's a couple folks on youtube which have done very informative videos on current state. For me, since I grew up with her, she has a lot of potential as both a museum and a hotel/convention center. That said Long Beach needs a drastic overhaul of her operations. Her hotel section needs a massive upgrade in the same vein as the SS Rotterdam (basically modernizing her rooms while keeping the historic elements that made them unique) and a segregation of her Hotel spaces from museum spaces (the idea that I saw that I liked was recreating the class separations and allowing tour guests use of most of the first class spaces while hotel guests utilize shared spaces in second class including a recreated second class pool area).

There's a Balao-class sub in Muskogee Oklahoma called the USS Batfish (SS-310) which I would definitely considered threatened. Our state received significant flooding in the spring of 2019, which caused the Batfish, formerly secured on dry land, to rise and break free of her moorings. Fundraising and repairs have been ongoing since then, but I have heard very little in the way of updates on the project. Do you have a comprehensive daily, weekly, or monthly inspection walkthrough? Just wondering how you organize the efforts to stay ahead of deterioration, while continuing to restore additional spaces...

We do an annual walk through of the whole ship then keep track of those that leak and check on them when it rains. Its always the same few spots. Otherwise, we have weekly and monthly checks of the tanks, looking for increases or decreases in water levels, checks of the cathodic protection monthly and quarterly, checks of the fire suppression as required by the local Fire Department. Deterioration is slow, so we get to spaces when we get to them and triage. Everyone has their jobs and specialties so as we see issues we call the right person, whether that's our beloved plumber or the guy who touches up the murals.

As a member of a longtime Coast Guard family, including WWII service in Hawaii, I recommend marketing her as "US Coast Guard Cutter - WHEC-37". She could also be referenced as "The RBT." Military historians remember plenty of U-boats and I-boats even though they only had numbers. Chief Justice Taney was a hot mess, however. Perhaps the Coast Guard and/or Congress could just officially rename the vessel as WHEC-37, with that designation never to be reused given the historical significance of the vessel. Some public relations expert probably has a lot more ideas as to how to deal with the name problem. Some pariahs can be redeemed with enough money and the right publicity.

her machinery is not the problem really. the 40's are actually in like new shape. her problems are deep in the ship, they are having to replace all of the structural supports deep in the ship so when she go's into drydock she does not just collapse. she has had a lot of leaks over the years so all the load bearing structure deep in the ship is compromised. but they have been going in for a few years now and rebuilding all of it and patching holes that are leaking along the way, just a very long process. they actually have some videos showing the work they are doing online, worth a watch. also after the drydock they are planning on having her out of the water so they do not have these problems again.

I live in Long Beach, The Queen Mary is owned by Long Beach, and was considered profitable before Covid, but in Need of work. The Ship has a Hotel, Bar and restaurants, Museum, and held Monthly Special events. It also includes an event space which was sometimes used for moving filming (Mostly inside the dome that was used for the Spruce Goose). All of the activity stopped during Covid. The company that has the QM operating lease runs several Hotels in Socal and is in trouble with the leases on many of them. If it does reopen, it is just across a Bridge from San Pedro home of the USS Iowa and SS VIctory Lane and would be the right place for a ships historian to stay for the night. The Hotel rooms are the former First Class State rooms of the ship, many with the prewar furnishings installed. I think that USS LCS(L)(3)-102 (i.e. Landing Craft Support, Large, Mark 3), moored at the former Mare Island Naval Ship Yard in Vallejo, CA, deserves mention. She is the last of the 130 "Mighty Midgets" (because pound for pound they were the most heavily armed US Navy vessels) which were built during the latter half of WW2 to provide close-in and ongoing fire support for amphibious landings. With a length of 158', a beam of 23'-6", and a draft of only 5'-8" they were the smallest, self deploying, blue water, US ships of the war. It is fascinating imagining her compliment of 6 officers and 65 enlisted working and living in such a small space. My grandfather served on LCS(L)(3)-37 at the Battle of Okinawa; supporting the amphibious landing, but seeing its heaviest action while performing radar picket duty, defending against Japanese "Kamikaze" attacks, suicide motorboats (which heavily damaged her on April 28, 1945), etc. When we last visited her in 2016, the staff gave my family and I a very thorough and personal guided tour of virtually every space on the ship which greatly aided my understanding of my grandfather's wartime service. Her small size lends itself to this type of intimate experience, but probably also negatively impacts her attendance and financial support. The LCS(L)(3)'s, as well as LCI(L)'s -713 (Portland, OR) and -1091 (Eureka, CA), which share a common hull design, are important elements of WW2 amphibious warfare history and deserve to be preserved.

I toured the Constellation 1995 and remember the the tour guides at the time were claiming the ship was the original frigate.
@BattleshipNewJersey3 жыл бұрын
The original restoration of Constellation called for her to be superficially made to look like the frigate for a major anniversary. And they just kind of left it that way leaving her to be thought of as the frigate for so long by so many that it kind of just became her story. By the 90s it was well established that this had happened and they were working to fix those errors but the myth still persists to this day.
@aj-2savage8963 жыл бұрын
FDR told them to do whatever half-ass thing was necessary to make it emulate the original frigate, and that was perpetuated over the years. Cutting a huge opening in the weather deck to achieve that way back when significantly weakened the hull. The original frigate Constellation was broken up at one location and the present one was built in a different location nearby. A few original pieces crossed over, as did some equipage, etc. ON PAPER, the Navy "rebuilt" the original, so it is the "same" Constellation in that sense. Materially, it is a different ship, built to a different design. When Congress gets cheap, you are allowed to rehab and upgrade and repair because that's the money they give you. They didn't provide money for a "new" ship. I've seen the same thing happen in military construction into recent times.

@BattleshipNewJersey3 жыл бұрын

@aj-2savage8963 жыл бұрын
Rubber coatings on subs are for acoustic stealth, not as a protective layer. Also, these days you are limited by being forced to use environmentally friendly coatings as opposed to what has shown itself to work best in the past. This usually involves some compromise in coating performance. It has come a long way though in the last 20 years. F-22 fighters and USS Theodore Roosevelt are compromised by the "green" coatings used during construction.
