"Waiting for a Star to Fall" by Boy Meets Girl is probably overlooked due to the pair's other big songs. Oh, not for themselves, but for Whitney Houston: "How Will I Know" and "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)." They offered "Waiting" to Clive Davis for Whitney's sophomore album but he turned it down (which actually led to "I Wanna Dance" getting written and recorded) and then they offered it to Belinda Carlisle who did record it (story goes, though, that Carlisle wasn't really happy with the song so she didn't include it on the "Heaven on Earth" album). After those two strikes, the pair decided to record it themselves.
@raymondtitano3819
@raymondtitano3819 Жыл бұрын
The demo version of I Wanna Dance sounds like a finished production, the kind of track you could easily picture Jody Watley, Taylor Dayne or Gloria Estefan recording and possibly having a decent-size hit with. It makes sense that Houston would take a already-solid song and make it preternatural. (As a testament to how good the song is, find David Byrne's cover of it, and listen to how he rearranges it without diluting its character.)

Good one! I think there is probably a good list like this... music from the late 80s that really only became popular when Smells Like Teen Spirit freed college radio/alternate rock to flow freely into the mainstream. I was lucky in college (87-91) to have a friend who did the alternate rock show at like 1 or 2am on the weekends at our SMALL radio station, so I got to hear some of that early. But yeah... an excellent shout out.

How are these songs chosen as more underrated than thousands of others from the 80s? Was there a survey, a questionnaire? Underrated by whom? Not that these songs aren’t underrated, more precisely just forgotten, but I would suggest there are so many, many more underrated than some of these. It just blows my 80s loving music mind that these were randomly chosen, where you can make another 100+ lists of underrated 80s songs.

You list these songs as 10 most underappreciated, and you include "Waiting For A Star To Fall," "Gloria," "I Ran (So Far Away)," and "Don't Dram It's Over." These were big hits that are still played today, especially the last two, so they're definitely not underappreciated. 'Gloria' had a bit of resurgence in pro hockey circles, of all places. The St. Louis Blues adopted the song has their theme when they won the Stanley Cup a few years ago. Apparently, they were on a road trip and were in the midst of trying to turn around their season. They got drunk and played Gloria that night a bunch of times and it was a bounding experience. So... as they caught fire and went on to win more, "PLAY GLORIA!" became the rallying cry. And the organization would eventually play it in the arena after victories. The fan base LOVED it, and it was a huge part of that season's story.
