Decent list, but it leans a little too heavily on recent composers (all WatchMojo lists seem to cater a little young at the expense of historical consensus, which is the closest thing we can get to objectivity in these fields). For instance, Danny Elfman at #2, but no Max Steiner? Still, they got the correct #1, and in the end, that's what matters. Also happy that Hermann was so high up.
@epon13579 жыл бұрын
Reading all these comments right now, I find it strange that hardly anyone has mentioned Hermann...
@NardoVogt9 жыл бұрын
Perhaps it has something to do that a current audience is doing the voting - so of course, it's a bit biased towards "younger" composers.
@chambeet9 жыл бұрын
Nardo Vogt Question: Are WatchMojo top 10s now entirely based on votes? From my memory, the earlier videos used to be somewhat based on voting, but largely curated by the editors/employees of WatchMojo. If they are now compiled entirely by online voting, it makes me wonder why they even employ anyone anymore, other than to put together the KZbin clipshows. I hope there is some effort that goes into making these lists other than online voting, since--you are right--the WatchMojo audience is largely young and inexperienced when it comes to the subjects of the lists. Not saying that's a bad thing, since I'm also quite young and inexperienced with MOST things. But I don't think I should be the final authority for any sort of accurate list either.

The piece that you showcase for Days of Heaven was not composed by Morricone, but by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns, from his Carnival of the Animals suite, Aquarium movement. Because it's the opening score of the movie, everyone mistakenly assumes it to be written by Morricone.

It would have been nice to have seen somewhere on this list the likes of Basil Poledouris (Robocop, Quigley Down Under, Conan the Barbarian, Starship Troopers) as well as Bill Conti (Karate Kid, Rocky). And I know they need to keep this video to a certain length, but it would have been nice to hit on some additional scores some of these composers have done: Jerry Goldsmith - First Blood and Alien; James Newton Howard - King Kong; James Horner - Braveheart; Alan Silvestri - Castaway; Hans Zimmer - Thelma and Louise; Danny Elfman - Spider-Man; John Williams - Superman. But I know that would make the video way long.

Star Trek The Motion Picture had the better score, but I suspect that it was too far back for their taste, so they picked one of the Next Generation films. And of course, Star Trek 2 and 3 were James Horner compositions. Star Trek 4 was Leonard Rosenman, who I confess I know little about...
@mustangsilver169 жыл бұрын
to be completely unbiased John Williams deserves to be #1 but I personally enjoy Hans Zimmer's music more. Watchmojo forgot to mention the Superman/Man of Steel score for both Williams and Zimmer. (even people who hated the movie Man of Steel said the score was awesome) Danny Elfman was a little high up on this list. He's a brilliant composer but a lot of his melodies are not only similar but exactly the same. Go back and watch Men in Black, Spider Man, Mars Attacks, and Flubber and you'll see what I'm talking about. And its pretty hard to tell apart the scores when he collaborates with Tim Burton. Williamns was were be belonged at #1, Hans Zimmer should've been #2 and I'd even put James Horner and Alan Silvestri over Elfman. There I said it. lol

John Williams never wrote an original piece of music in his life. Undoubtably a talented conductor, arranger and pianist, and great at creating timeless themes such as Jurassic Park and Star Wars. BUT, go listen to The Planet Suite by Holst, and you will have pretty much listened to every John Williams piece ever. It’s 52 minutes long, and every single bit of John Williams material comes from it.

I also love his recent work...did you listen to the soundtrack of Big Hero 6 yet?:) I guess he's not here, because he's still pretty new in the business in comparison to the others. He just didn't make enough soundtracks yet...but I'm sure there will be a lot of awesome stuff to come, which will bring him more public recognition. :)
@goth_fraggle9 жыл бұрын
MissesShelly The thing with Jackman is also, that much of his work is very Zimmer-ish, since he (like Djawadi Örvarsson and Gregson-Williams) is part of Zimmer's clone-army. He still doesn't have a really distinctive style. I really, really love his ABraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter score, but I think Örvarsson and Djawadi are far more talented. Pacific Rim and Mortal Instruments knock out all of Jackman's scores. Jacikman is good and talented and I hope he will sometime get a job where he can show his talents, but right now, there are far better composers out there
