Boxing everything is a great tip. Last year, when we moved I didn't realize it would be such a problem. My bedroom had a lot of things left that were not in boxes and it took longer than necessary to take everything. Another good tip is to purge anything you won't need. It saves space and time when you are moving.

Another helpful tip is to make a spreadsheet if you want to get really specific about what is in each box. (Or just to take inventory of what you own.) I label each box with a number and write the destination. For example Box #1 Kitchen, and then in a google spreadsheet list what exactly is in the box, like sponges.
@Bigotedechivo8 жыл бұрын
who "buys" boxes? Like, you can get them for free almost anywhere, drugstores, supermarkets, pharmacys. I got a HUGE box full with folded boxes inside for free at my regular supermarket. Boom, I didn't waste a single $ and then it goes to recycle

Exactly! I've moved a gazillion times and never bought a single box, I just get them from stores. I just ask an employee and they're usually very willingn to help, especially when they're stocking shelves. Sometimes I've been told to go to the back if they've already put them out, I just have to put them back together with mailing tape, but either way it's just very easy to get free boxes of different sizes. Just got some more boxes from a supermarket a couple of days ago. Walmart is also a very good place to get boxes, late at night when they're stocking shelves is the best time, you can get all different sizes from different departments in one single round.

Great tips! We're moving Friday and it's going much smoother than in the past. Love your overalls tip! And something that really helped me was a list I made last time with all the phone #'s and account #'s for utilities, credit cards, etc. and a check list to go down to remember to change addresses w/magazines, drivers license, registration, post office, etc. I'm so glad I saved it all. Oh, and we invested in about 10 plastic bins from home depot a few years back and the handles really help with the extra heavy stuff like books.

Thank you SO MUCH! (I didn't move with boxes I tried to use random bags and containers and it wasn't a great idea so YES boxes are IMPORTANT).

@ 5:10 You can also use an apron with big blousy pockets to hold all your markers, sticky-tape and measuring tape- also an important critical item for moving into a place & good to keep handy. Might also want to keep cheap heavy leather-handed gardening gloves and a few band-aids, and a tube of triple antibiotic ointment, as I know these are essential for moves. Believe it or not the gloves seem to give extra strength! It's a weird sensation, but maybe it's mechanism is to trick the mind into ignoring distracting things like the textures of boxes, and lets your hands focus more on the important things like power-lifting, hefting and slinging boxes onto the hand-truck & into the moving truck.
@neko878 жыл бұрын

Also, I highly recommend those plastic lidded storage bins instead of boxes, they’re reusable, I use them for holiday decorations and out of season clothes and coats. They also stack really well. I used about 10 for my move but I lay need 3 for regular storage, stacked they only take up 1/4 of a tiny hall closet
@ScoutAdams5 жыл бұрын
You’re so right about the paper tape. Other tapes doubles one’s energy spent on packing because it takes so much time to find the edge of that damn clear (and expensive) tape - that reqires scissors or a knife to cut. I’m moving and dread it, but as much as I want to move on the cheap, I’m taking your advice and hiring professional movers. Thanks for the helpful vid!

Don't buy boxes, all stores have boxes they will throw away after they restock at night. Call them and ask if they can save them for u or go in at midnight and yonk them. Also Number your boxes and make a paper list of what's in 1-30, u could even take a picture. Easier to check a list than 30 boxes.

Hey here's another tip!! You don't need to buy boxes. Whenever I was moving, I went to Walmart at night time when they were unpacking all their boxes and just asked them if I could have some of their empty boxes. Go for the toilet paper aisle or the cereal aisle. You'll score some nice big boxes there!

best moving tip I've ever learned- get some moving straps for heavy furniture. A duo using some straps can lift damn near anything. I was so freaked out having to move a couch by myself cause my wife is a little girl like in the video here (lul), was afraid I was going to tear it up. My father in law lent some straps to us and I gave it a whirl with the wife. We lifted that couch like it was 100% cotton. Other times I've had to move furniture either solo, where I'd have to drag it and fuck it up, or with other people, one person always needs to reaffirm their grip making it take 3=5x as long. Huge huge huge help. Never underestimate leverage and teamwork. edit- I think this is common knowledge and wasn't worth mentioning but there are 2 kinds of boxes you should look for. Grocery store boxes, and you can get creative with that. When I worked in a store bakery we were always happy to provide a shitton of boxes to anyone that asked. They get crushed and recycled otherwise so you're hurting absolutely nothing. Second. It's still in stores, but is so handy it needs to be mentioned separately. PRODUCE SECTION BANANA BOXES. These are fantastic for your medium to small items due to the open tops. They're sturdy, and don't require any tape to seal. I will never move without having at least 5 banana boxes on hand.

Lots of great ideas! I disagree with the overalls idea though. Easy peasy. One step at a time= make a list if you are lost and cross them off as you get them done. It also helps to do one room at a time. Start small: a closet. Clear it out completely. Then clean and if needed paint it and patch any holes. One small room done right is the best 1st step and gives us the confidence to carry on to do the next steps

Labeling boxes: maybe too much detail, but I label mine with A-Z, then AA-ZZ, etc. or numbers. Then as I pack, I write everything (pretty much) that's in the box on a list in a notebook. (I transfer the info to my notes app, but you can just leave it on paper.) I guess it slows me up, but I had a situation where our condo assoc told us we had to sell our condos to them (long story), and then it got delayed by TWO YEARS. I had a ton of boxes packed that whole time, and I am so glad I knew which box held which stuff.
