As a New Yorker I recommend... 1. Lake George - in the Southeast Adirondacks, about 55 mi North of Albany. Clearest water on the East Coast. Book early (Jan-March). Very popular with NYers/NJ and family friendly. 2. Two particular things in the Castkills: 2A. North-South Lake Campground and the Escarpment. You can camp out here or go for the day, and hike up to one of the best views you've ever seen (not that hard either - only 1/2 mile walk). 2B. Kaaterskill Falls - Near North/South Lake. Probably the best waterfall in NYS besides the American/BV at Niagara. About 3/5 mile walk through the woods. Be careful parking on route 23A, as parking's limited and close to moving traffic. 23A is great to drive as it climbs its way up the plateau from I-87 through a clove.

What has happened to the falls over the years is an absolute disgrace. When I was a young girl, my parents would take me there and it was stunning, well kept, vibrant and full of hustle and bustle. Now it looks like a scene from the walking dead. I live a good 40 minutes from there and refuse to go. If I were to go to the falls, it would be the Canadian side. As for Letchworth, it’s absolutely stunning. One of my favorite parks. Another place you may want to try is Ellicotville, and Allegany State Park. Allegany State Park is about 30 minutes from Ellicotville. Ellicotville, is a small town with, shops, restaurants, bars and nice B&B’s and if you’re into skiing, a great place to visit. It’s a bit pricey but gorgeous. If you ever try Allegany State Park, you need to visit Thunder Rocks inside the park. The foliage in the fall is absolutely stunning. It offers, camping, small lakes, snowmobile & Hiking trails and so much more.

It's a nice place indeed. But on an intellectual plane, it's more of a Hamptons in Upstate NY that draws a materialistic crowd concerned about fine wine and dine and of course gambling either horse racing or the casino. It's more about these things than the recreational outdoors.

@@michaelnoviello6302 Given that surveying the outdoors can be a very intellectual activity as it is physical, Saratoga Springs is better known as a resort for those looking to satisfy their lower appetites. Don't want to offend anyone who is from Saratoga Springs. I think it is a beautiful place but its main draw are the fancy restaurants on Broadway, the race tracks and the casino. The video mentions Ithaca as the 2nd favorite destination in NY. A college town with a very highly educated populace and surrounding outdoor beauty isn't what Saratoga Springs is about. Yes, it's another form of elitism that separates the material elitism of the affluent. "world famous woodstock, yes THAT woodstock" wasn't actually where the original woodstock festival was. It was in Bethel NY, Also in the catskills.

How can Saratoga be left off this list. The world famous racetrack and the quaint town makes it the place to visit in NY state.

I’m from Brooklyn, so the stuff I know is generally closer to the city, but the Palisades are really cool, and Riis Beach on Long Island is my favorite in the state. Other than that Ausable Canyon near Plattsburgh is a must see if you’re gonna be around the Canadian border.

Just a minor correction... It's Ausable Chasm, not Canyon. But I agree... it's a must-see if you're in that area.
