One of my favorite bits of trivia: Patrick Stewart has played Claudius in two BBC versions, the first with Derek Jacobi (The Master) as Hamlet and the other with David Tennant (The Doctor). The Jacobi version also had Lalla Ward (Romana) as Ophelia.

Hamlet blew my mind completely when I had learned that all revenge plays of the time held certain tropes. The main character, a "play during the play", a reckoning with the father, and a villain. When you look at that with Hamlet as the main character, you get one set of answers. When you look at Claudius, you get another. When you look at, Fortinbras, what then, is the "play within the play"...

Man, the themes and characters of Shakespeare are pretty cool, but when you read it its like its another foreign language! It's like if you gave Shakespeare a text message that said lol, ttyl, g2g, etc lol

That is the moment when you're from Russia and you think that the best Hamlet film is a picture by Grigoriy Kozintsev. This wonderful work is now forgotten abroad, altho it won the first place on Shakespear festival in 60's. Sure, people in english-speaking countries may don't know russian cinematography, but i should recommend you to watch such an interesting adaptation. (Kozintsev also had wrote a book about Hamlet before he have started shooting)

my fave Hamlet trivia is the skull used in the BBC 2009 version starring a brilliant David Tennant was a fan of Hamlet. he wrote in his will that his skull was to be used as Yorick's in a production. well it was used on stage and screen with David Tennant's Hamlet.

You know the skull of yorrick was an actual human skull. Tchaekovsky loved shakespeare so much that he gave the productions his skull after death and it was used in david tennents 2009 adaptation.

I agree. They should have shown more of Branagh's version. Mel Gibson's version suffers from a weak Horatio and strong Ophelia. Branagh's is incredibly well done. Closest to the play -- he actually DOES the entire play -- and he makes the language accessible. Best version out there.

Hey man, if you look on Facebook, you can clearly see many other people with the name Hamlet. To me though, what's more unbelievable is the fact that I have met 2 more people with my name. One of them used to live right next to me, while the other went to my school. It's okay if you don't want to believe me, it doesn't affect me at all.

To be is not a question, it is a verb . Not to be is an impossible question , an impossible speculation. For none of us can imagine non being . Not even when we are asleep . Or in the deeper sleep in death . It's this fear that terrifies hamlet, the not knowing of what's next . To sleep ?

I don't know how accidental was the death of Polonius. It's dangerous work spying on the Prince in private conference with the Queen in her chamber. Nor is it clear that Ophelia's death was a suicide. We see her as "distracted' so it's quite possible her death was an accident attributed to distracted behavior.

Unpopular opinion: Gibson’s is the best. Franco Zeffirelli directs it beautifully with a great cast: Ian Holm, Alan Bates, Glenn Close(one of the few American actors who speaks the language adroitly), Helena Bonham Carter, & Paul Scofeild as the Hamlet’s father is unbelievable - everyone in the cast is terrific. Gibson’s Hamlet is direct and to the point: he’s in pain and out of control. You lose some intellect & deviousness but what’s gained is an emotional urgency. It sacrifices the philosophic for the dramatic. Branagh’s portrayal is obviously more encompassing of Hamlet’s vastness but for me is overrated. It’s: KENNETH BRANAGH PLAYS...hamlet. Branagh is an incredible actor & his Much Ado About Nothing is in my top 3 Shakespeare films, but(for me) his hamlet collapses under its own self importance: THEE HAMLET TO END ALL HAMLETS! There are scenes where he displays every emotion under the sun seconds from each other as he tries to keep up with the play & it comes off showy & false. I think it would of been better with someone else directing. Olivier’s is dated, Burton’s overly theatric, Hawke(yikes!), what I’ve seen of Law(blah), & not impressed by Tennant which so many seem to love. Ahywho, it’s all subjective & there’s no perfect Hamlet(Gibson undoubtedly narrows him) but as entire production & ensemble I’ll take Zeffirelli’s/Gibson’s.
