im willing to bet that if not for blade of darkness, souls series would have been very different. the vibe of the game, the gameplay style, perhaps those were coincidentally similar, but then during the fight against one of the first demon souls bosses you hear soundtrack that is more or less straight from blade of darkness. i refuse to believe that to be just a coincidence. it is a bit of a shame blade of darkness did not receive a direct follow up, but at the very least it inspired games that still live on decades later.

I think you really hit the nail on the head with Blade of Darkness. The atmosphere of that game is amazing, it has a true sword and sorcery-feel to it and that mixed with the very assyrian/babylonian-inspired mythology of the game really sets it apart. The plot is very typical but the narration and the maps do tell their own stories through gameplay. In short, I freakin' love this game, replayed it many times over since 2001 :D

Other games which are not as good but are still worth trying: Rise of the Argonauts, Kult: Heretic Kingdoms, Dungeon Lords, Silverfall, Ultra Age, Viking: Battle for Asgard, Daemonica, Knights of the Temple, Loki and Venetica.

@clichk4gameplay You can cancel your attacks with dash button in combos in BoD to have shorcuts to next moves in combos. For example: You have Attack + ^v + ^ scimitar combo. You can do the third move faster with: Attack + dash + ^v + dash + ^. Dash is canceling current move in combo and allows you to do the next move faster! You may find many interesting undocumented combinations with it. There is also PvP mode for BoD :)

I was hopeful for the next game from the developers of Seven, but was disappointed to learn it wouldn't have any of the vertical exploration. Another extremely underrated RPG in my opinion is Crystal Project. It has vertical exploration too, multiclassing, good itemization, a MASSIVE world and a huge amount of potential sequence breaking. Took me 80 hours to beat too. Yes, it's a JRPG, but I liked it a lot and I normally hate JRPGs.

I've picked up a few games based on C4G reviews. My favorite by far was Dungeon Siege 3. What surprised me is how hard the game is. It's more of an action adventure RPG-lite, but the combat was closer to Dark Souls than Diablo. Some of the boss fights gave me that "can I even win this?" feeling I get on the harder Souls bosses, but you figure out strategies and builds that make the fight doable. It's a relatively short game and I feel I will definitely play it through again. Not entirely obscure, but my favorite "obscure" series I haven't seen C4G cover is Spellforce, probably because it's a RPG/RTS hybrid. I love that series though. It perfectly captures something that Lord of the Rings has but most RPG games do not: heroes fighting in large battles. It makes for a much more epic feeling RPG. The first game and it's DLCs are definitely the best, although I preferred the less-janky implementation of the second game.

i'll always recommend the original Blade of Darkness to the rerelease, it's a bit more work to get working but it reads combo inputs better and can let you bypass attack animations to get the longer special combos off without getting interrupted, i feel like a lot of the new features the rerelease tried to do didn't land all that well. also the enemies respawning were reinforcements, if you get the gem (i think it's the blue one) that spawns them in first the old bodies are still there
