You're Harlem is named after our Haarlem. Just as new York was originally new Amsterdam, brooklyn was named after Dutch town of Breukelen, coney island named after konijn eiland (rabbit island) flushing was named after Dutch city of Vlissingen. And even Yankees was a slur for Dutch colonials who often were named Jan, Kees or Jan-kees (that became Yankees)

Don't forget that The Netherlands was the richest country in the world in the 17th century. It's a small country with a rich history. They built New York initially New Amsterdam that's why you have Harlem in NY named after the city of Haarlem or Brooklyn coming from Breukelen near Utrecht. I'm French but I've been living in the Netherlands for 16 years near the Hague and Delft. By the way they forgot Delft in the vidéo which is my favorite city

You were wondering about the food, "D", here you are: "Dutch Food - 10 Delicious & Famous Dishes in Amsterdam" - Traditional Dishes (on YT) At around 20, I was an au-pair in Amsterdam. The lady originated from Indonesia (formerly the Dutch East Indies) and she was cooking divinely. Sunday brunch consisted of an array of specialty breads - some, I remember, made with onions, seeds, ... - and as many different kinds of cheeses (in the USA, you only know the Gouda but there are so many more that I wish you'll be able to taste some day) and jams. Then, particularly when there were visitors, there was a "Rijsttafel" [a rice table], which consists, in good Asian fashion, in a huge bowl of rice and a dozen or so dishes (meats, vegetables, sauces), all absolutely delicious. After a couple of weeks at her home, I could no longer zip up my jeans! And when I left a few months later, she told me that it was time because my appetite was beginning to weigh a little in her food budget... :o))) Eet smaakelijk !

The "waterbridge" refers to an aqueduct, and in the Netherlands, we have three types: the aqueduct, viaduct, and ecoduct. The ecoduct enables animals to cross from one part of a forest to another without encountering traffic. Great reaction! Thank you for appreciating our small country with its huge history!

Can you imagine tourists come all the way to the Netherlands and sometimes hardly leave Amsterdam, when all of this is location not even 2 hours away

The Netherlands founded New York but it was called New Amsterdam till the english bought and renamed it ;-) Who you think gave Harlem it's name? Indeed named after Haarlem. We sold it to the English in exchange for Surinam because 2 english settlements north and south of the area where already creeping up due to (hudson) river and we didn't want to go to war over it. But the people stayed so the english had a lot of people with dutch names like jan and kees... Now you know why new york is the home of the Yankees ;-)

It's not German architecture. It's Dutch architecture. They are not the same. Our Harlem was there first ;) The Dutch used to own New York.

Greetings from the original Haarlem! My city was the namesake of your Harlem in New York. Back in the days that it was still controlled by us, and New York was called New Amsterdam. I’d love to visit the Harlem in the US though! Loads of history in that area, especially when it comes to music. But do visit Haarlem too! You’ll love it, I’m sure. Good reaction! And that Flag-thing, it is the other way around: What was the French or Dutch flag before? The Dutch flag, in use since the 16th century, is the older of the two. The French flag in its current form only dates from 1794.

Do you know what I always think when I see these videos - there are super rich people who secure a place in a space rocket and go on a "holiday" in the ISS. It is certainly a great experience, but as we see again and again, there are so many wonderful places on earth that one lifetime is not enough to see and appreciate them all, to spend a reasonable amount of time there. If I had the money, I would see all these places and stay everywhere for at least a month and do nothing else except marvel at the beauty of our nature and the architecture and cultural creations of the people. But since I don't have the money, I think these videos and Google Earth are great. 😂

7:45 Yes people are living there, I live a little bit further away but still city center. And no I'm not rich, I'm a student with a 2 bedroom appartment as part of the social rent system (for which you just have to be lucky or spend a lot of time for to find something, but it definitely is possible). So rent is like 750 per month as it's protected (from getting too high) by the system. But yes, if I had to buy the property, that would be at least half a million.

Also fun fact, that castle was created by Cuypers, one of the most famous architects of the Netherlands. He also created arguably 2 of the most iconic buildings in the Netherlands, the Rijksmuseum and the central station of Amsterdam. Later, his son also became and archtict and he and his son designed the cathedral (one of my FAVOURITE in all of Europe, and actually, in the top 5 largest more recently constructed cathedrals) shown at 8:28. Such a talented family! Imagine being able to create stations, churches, museums and castles all while creating the best buildings in each category

1:19 on the flag. It is actually the other way around. The Dutch Republic was arguably the first modern nation-state (no king, not governed by the church, not part of some royal family's inheritance). Their flag (funnily enough called the Princes Flag, because the Prince of Orange was considered the leading force in the 80's years war of independence against the Spanish Empire) was the first tricolour (national) flag in the world. Originally it was Orange/White/Blue but the orange tended to quickly faded to red under the influence of the elements, so it changed to Red/White/Blue fairly soon. That flag can be seen on many paintings of Dutch ships and naval battles from the 16th century onwards (maybe even before that). The French, the Russians, Luxembourg and a few others later took inspiration from that flag. And all modern tricolours (flags with 3 coloured bands) can be traced back to that Dutch Republic flag.

Please please please react to more video's of the Netherlands. It is a very small but beautiful country. We are one of the only countries in the world who overwon the sea. Half of the country is below sea level but we made it a place to live. The Netherlands is helping out New Orleans (and many more places) with the fight against the rising sea level. I am from the Netherlands and last May I stayed in ‘your Harlem’ for a month. It is easy to dis on Harlem because of poverty, drug use and other problems. But there were also great people who cared for the poor in their community, interesting history and art, a church on every street corner etc. The history of how tens of thousands of black people fled persecution and discrimination in the south, came to Harlem and created great art and music in spite of desperate circumstances is not less valid than the story of the Dutch fighting the water for centuries.

As usual they only show places in the west and middle of the country, around Amsterdam and Utrecht, as if the rest of the country isn’t interesting enough but that isn’t true. These places are just farther away from Amsterdam where tourists use to flock. Maastricht and Heuvelland Limburg, Den Bosch, Nijmegen, Middelburg. If you use a wide angle lens, everything at the side of the frame is getting tilted. Your Harlem is named after dutch Haarlem.

7:42 if those houses are still peoples homes (most aren't because no-one can afford them, so these days many are businesses) they are indeed millionaires or more likely old-money billionaire families. They were built in the 17th and 18th century by some of the richest people on the planet making shedloads of money from controlling world trade.
