So I thought it would be fun to try something different here. Which cards out of the original Base Set, Jungle and Fossil expansions are the most accurate to their Pokémon counterparts in the Red and Blue versions? Here is my top 10 list. And it was inspired by the challenge I did where I beat the Red Version using only the "cards" from the Overgrowth theme deck. Check that out here:

It's worth noting that it's not just the card game, the Pokémon anime has _also_ stated that Rock and Ground are subtypes of Fighting, which is why Bruno uses Rock-types and why Brock was allowed to enter Geodude into that one "Fighting-types only" tournament.

I love this. I used to think about this kind of thing all the time as a kid, and it always bugged me, too, that the Squirtle line was weak to Lightning instead of Grass. But not as much as Gyarados being weak to Grass and not Lightning in it's original card! I'd honestly love to see a companion list to this some time about the biggest goof-ups or inaccuracies to RB on the original cards

To be honest, I think Seel should've been the first. At level 12 it only has Headbutt on RB while Voltorb also has Screech. Also it's more consistent on the typing (electric weakness against fighting weakness). Also it's more similar in retreat and hp to the game. The only thing is that Headbutt is a bit weak.

keep in mind though, its not about poison sting being "that strong" its about the fact beedrill has more attack stat and therefore can do more damage with that move than Weedle

Yeah I don’t know if I made it clear enough that I’m not saying it should be changed or that I don’t understand it, just more so that I’m looking for anything that doesn’t exactly match up just to rank them better. I still put Beedrill in the top 10, but that’s just there to help me not place it at #1.

I'd probably give Seel an extra point for only knowing Headbutt, since that is the only move it can know at level 12 without TMs and the like getting involved. Whereas it is impossible for Voltorb to not also know Screech at level 10. And I don't think I would have dinged Ditto so much for Transform working slightly differently, especially since it was probably a necessary change to make to keep the game running smoothly.
@Paraspectre
@Paraspectre Жыл бұрын
I honestly think that’s the best they could’ve done with Ditto, but it didn’t feel right to have it on the list. It probably could’ve worked by only transforming once, but that could get messy keeping track of it or potentially mixing up decks or whatever

Here's something interesting... Star Freeze was actually meant to be a move in Red and Green, but was ultimately replaced with... Rock Slide. At least, this has been speculated due to the information existing in the same data slot, and the sound effect for Rock Slide being rather unfitting. You can read more on The Cutting Room Floor pages on Red and Blue. Buuuut I don't think Starmie can learn Rock Slide. :)

something worth considering w/ machop and seel: flinch is only an effect if the user has speed advantage. you can't go last in a turn, proc a flinch, and have it carry over to the next turn. so since machop and seel are slow as molasses, low kick and headbutt not being able to paralyze is only less accurate to them being able to paralyze, but only if they're specifically attacking a geodude or rhyhorn

Hi, new subscriber here and I'm literally loving your channel! It deviates from the average, also it is really nice tcg for gameboy, I would like to bring more challenges and videos in general about tcg2. Then, my two cents about your cards' review: Just a couple of premises before my opinion (my two cents!): 1. Considering the formulas of the original games, comparing the base stats to decree the HP makes no sense since they use completely different criteria in the TCG. But above all, precisely the formulas, are too different to criticize the HP of a card based only on that, otherwise Chansey should have 250 HP; 2. If it is true that the retreat cost is generally in function of the weight and speed of the represented pokemon (and it is, I agree with you) so is the cost of energy cards of the moves (see example of Zubat below); 3. The characterization of moves and types had to be a distinctive trait, having the card game rules too simple, for that many fire moves discard energies and many water moves increase in strength when you give it more, or many earth moves damages the benches, or wind (flying) ones switches opponent ones, but the thing has succeeded little in my opinion; ON SINGLE CARDS: 1. Blastoise: I think more or less like you: maybe a bit too fast with rain dance that allows him to charge all the energy available and attack without waiting for turns (which in my opinion translates into speed, something in which Blastoise is definitely not specialized haha); 2. Zubat really is too slow: On two moves, both require two energy cards. Supersound I would have done with a single colorless; 3. I think 3 energy for retreat cost for Machop would be too much. 1 or 2 is fine to me. Not so "chubby" Pokèmon (even if slow) for a stage 1 haha; 4. Seel should have at least 2 of retreat cost, you can not think that Machop has 2 or 3 and then find that Seel with 1 is right: either one or the other! 5. Maybe i'd gave Voltorb 0 retreat cost. 6. Charmander line should have less HP than Bulbasaur and Squirtle lines. For the base ones I'd give 50 all, or 40 to Charmander and 50 to the other ones: they're simply less fragile. Same for Ivysaur and Wartortle: 10 more each, and 10 less To Charmeleon. I think it was only on fanservice (i'm a Charizard user haha) and think everyone agreeds if i say that Fire Spin 120 is way too much and It has nothing to do with the move of the games but these are for another topic; 7. Clefairy deserved at least 50 HP, or 60 to me. Is just bulkier than starters; 8. I would give Ditto for its pokemon power to keep its original 50 HP as in the original games; 9. Also Seel should use colorless energy to me for Headbutt; 10(?) in the comments section yiou wrote that Kadabra has 3 retreat cost and it's true: but soooo wrong they did. Kadabra should have 1 o 0 to me. Those are my thoughts, no offense intended obviously! Hope You'll thik about them! Just a little random thought: How cool would it be if Machop's Low Kick (and similar moves on other cards) had dealt 10 damage + another 10 for each retreat cost on the opponent?
@SheezyBites
@SheezyBites Жыл бұрын
Vileplume at level 35 should have 119-130 HP Blastoise at 52 should have 176-192 HP Gravelar at 29 should have 89-97 HP Beedrill at 32 should have 103-113 HP Weedle at 12 should have 39-42 HP... which it actually does for once!!! Golbat at 29 should have 100-109 HP Zubat at 10 should have 34-37 HP... which is oddly lower than the card, but pretty close. Machop at 20 should have 70-76 HP Seel at 12 should have 45-48 HP... not 60! That's way high Voltorb at 10 should have 34-37 HP... again lower than the game, but pretty close. I think Weedle was undervalued here, but I get your decisions. The card game has a very weird idea of how HP works... but compared to the madness of base set's level 55 chansey with 120HP when it should have 374-391 it could definitely be worse...

Personally I prefer the early cards' type spread to that of the main games. Rock, Ground, and Fighting have enough conceptual overlap that lumping them together makes things tidy. Likewise merging Ice and Water, merging Grass and Bug, merging Psychic and Ghost, and eliminating Flying and Dragon from consideration entirely. I don't like later additions like Dark, Steel, and Fairy as I feel it upsets the cleanness of the card game's narrower set of types to begin with - Dark should've just been Fighting, Psychic, or Colorless on a case by case basis for the Pokemon species, Steel should've been Fighting or Electric, and Fairy should have just been Psychic.

@@Paraspectre I'm more inclined to think the main games have too many (sometimes redundant) types and the card game's initial mix of eight is more than sufficient. Oof, I think this is a really cool video idea but it's a BIT too nit-picky even for me. You have to accept SOME differences due to the limitations of the medium. Also, retreat cost is fairly clearly a mixture of speed and size with a splash of, like, "flavour". There's not really any direct comparison. But complaining that Poison Sting does 40 damage on a Beedrill, which is a Stage 2 evolution... well, I know it's not really COMPLAINING but yaknow. It was SO difficult to get a Stage 2 out in Base/Jungle/Fossil format, it would be insane to make it do 20 damage on a Poison Sting. I mean, they could've given it a different move of course. ANYWAY, I think it's a very cool concept. But I think you need to be a little more forgiving on some the aspects and rely a bit more on if things "feel" equal rather than basing it on pure numbers. For example, with the Poison Sting example, obviously Beedrill has a much higher Attack stat than Weedle so while the base power of Poison Sting is low, it would probably do at least 4x more damage on a Level 32 Beedrill than a Level 12 Weedle. Buuuut for the most part, really well done. I really liked that you checked the levels and mentioned when something would've had to learn an attack as an earlier evolution (and the Weedle being Level 12 and still not evolved means that a lot of Pokemon aren't evolving at the minimum level so this is justifiable). I always found the levels on the cards really interesting and when I was a kid I used to be like "UMM ACKSHULLY IT SHOULDN'T KNOW THAT MOVE YET"
@Ashfold_Eberesche

Oh and because pedantry is the name of the game, Low Kick on Machop wouldn't flinch more than 70% of the time because flinch can't occur if Machop attacks second, which it would do often because of its low Speed stat. Obviously just poking fun, I'm not really that anal retentive xD
@Paraspectre
@Paraspectre Жыл бұрын
Yeah I was only looking for anything that wasn’t an exact translation just for the sake of ranking these. I’m not actually upset about them 😅. As far as retreat costs go, I mentioned that there’s no true representation of it to speed or weight. It’s kind of a combination of both, but seems to be more geared to speed in a lot of cases. But I DO think that 40 is still too high for Beedrill’s Poison Sting. As you said, it should’ve just been a different move. Or have it cost less for less damage or something. They made Kakuna way too good.
@Ashfold_Eberesche
@Ashfold_Eberesche Жыл бұрын
@@Paraspectre You did indeed mention it, but I hadn't got to that point yet xD I don't remember Base Kakuna, lemme check... 80HP is more than I remember. Oh ahaha the classic Stiffen Kakuna - how could I forget! You couldn't use this card in a game at school without endless "stiffen" comments. Honeatly they should've done a Pin Missile for the second move slot for Beedrill. Although I always hated their interpretation of multi-hit moves - they were almost always "x damage multiplied by number of heads" and zero damage should never be an option on any attack over 2 energy, especially on a Stage 2. Those types of attacks are awful and I don't think I've ever run a Pokemon that uses one except Doduo (A perfectly reasonable 1 colourless for 0/10/20 with a decent Stage 1 evo) Anyway thanks for the reply :D

You made me realize that Nintendo could have done a better job designing the Beedrill card. Twineedle is the signature move of Beedrill(13:11) and is weaker than Poison Sting. What would have been a good idea is if Beedrill had Agility instead of Poison Sting. Agility would be the same as Fearow's Agility. For Twineedle, the attack would attack twice. Each shot would do 20 damage each and have the player flip a coin. If heads, the opponents Pokémon would be poisoned.

I assume it just makes a lot more work for players always having to subtract damage for an attack. it seems to be mostly reserved for colorless flying pokemon having a resistance to fighting, or dark types having a resistance to psychic. you know, I think poison type has become the one game type to change the most times in the tcg? it started as a grass type in base set, changed to a psychic type around the start of the diamond/pearl block, and I think now they're considered dark types as of the sword and shield block.

Really enjoyed the video! I was skeptical about the topic but how the approach was defined in the beginning felt more justified by the end. The only thing I can disagree with is placements of Seel and Machop since at least Low Kick got its typing correct. Voltorb made full sense for the move's type as well if Colorless is considered as Normal. But that's a nitpicking. I would like to see similar videos again. TCG is my blind spot so this kind of topic is really nice way to learn about it. If there would be enough cards on Base Set - Fossil decks, maybe a video about Top 10 Original Pokémon Cards Most Accurate after Red and Blue Versions, so the Mud Slap Diglett could have a chance to shine.

Retreat cost really isnt designed to correlate to speed. The only thing I have found it correlates to is obviously first and foremost game balance. But most, or maybe all flying type or winged pokemon(like beedrill) or light weight pokemon have no retreat cost. The heavier and stronger they are, the more they have retreat cost. Not speed. Because if that were the case, this would correlate more and it never does. Higher stage pokemon with higher hp seems to correlate with, again, the winged/flying pokemon rule exception. I feel like beedrill should have had it so that it does 30 damage+ 30 if you had a fourth energy card attached. And then made poison sting 2 grass energy but deal 20 damage with a chance to poison which is more in line with relative power of those moves and their function.
@Paraspectre
@Paraspectre Жыл бұрын
For sure. And I said that retreat costs aren’t exactly based on speed, it’s just something a lot of them have in common. I mean Mewtwo and Kadabra are quite fast and not all that heavy and they both have a 3 retreat cost.

I don't disagree with anything you said but I did have an explanation for something you found odd with that Charmander card. I think one of the reasons why they would have the mechanic to discard an energy card is to replicate the power point (PP) feature of moves in the actual games. But ember isn't a move with very limited power points, at least not worthy of discarding a card.

Vileplume Heal being like Leech Seed? Though that deals opponent damage. But it's the closest to passive heal and allowing Vileplume to Petal Dance in the same turn. Would be fun to review why your rejections were rejected - any with moves at too low of a level? Some of your winning cards almost were, requiring delayed evolutions.
@Paraspectre
@Paraspectre Жыл бұрын
There are actually a ton of Pokémon that are too low leveled to know their moves. It was the reason I rejected most. And Heal could be like Leech Seed but the Oddish line can’t even learn it, at least normally. So that’s why I leaned more toward Absorb or Mega Drain

I would have put a lot more emphasis on the typing, maybe it's just because I play the games and not the TCG, but type is one of the most defnining things for a pokemon for me, and the TCG's type changes are the most obvious change that the TCG makes in my eyes, I don't think I would've included any pokemon who had their types changed in the top 10.

Hydro Pump is more iconical and elemental (it was really important for the first appearence on that media - the card game) and Blastoise have cannons which is its main characteristics, and since they've decided to give it a PKMN power and the cards has not more than 2 moves (or one power and one move) they had to choose to me.
