Tyra chastised one girl for leaving the gap in her teeth, yet literally had a dentist damage another girl's teeth to create a gap! Make up your mind.

@@PerpetuallyAnnoyed Absolutely. Any reality TV show that includes permanent bodily modification should not be allowed to exist, period. It is one thing if you have a gap tooth, another one is you widen it artificially...with time, the gap is likely to be widening and in a couple of years it may cost you your teeth!

Remember when someone literally got hypothermia after repeatedly trying to tell the photographer and staff that she wasn’t feeling okay and something was wrong, and then got chastised in judging for not speaking up? She literally told you but you didn’t listen. And the contestant who cheated on her boyfriend and then they recorded and aired both her and her boyfriend’s side of the conversation while she was sobbing on the ground trying to hide from the cameras?

Back in the day I remember hating Keenyah for how she was portrayed in the show, now, after years watching her cycle, I honestly don't know how she managed to pull it together with the whole criticism about her weight, being sexually harassed, even Shannon from cycles 1/17 stated how she was constantly pressured to be "more sexy", yet they lose it whenever a contestant has had a past as an escort or past work with Playboy, smh. Talk about double standards 🙄

Saying it “hasn’t aged well” is an overstatement because the show is not that old and it even got lots of backlash and criticism when it first aired. I’d say it’s not that the show hasn’t aged well but more so the target audience has grown up and learned that many elements of the show are negative despite being entertaining. I’d say the show is a guilty pleasure of mine but there were many things that had me going “WTF”. As for those who wondered why contestants who were discriminatory weren’t eliminated, it’s because they were only judged for their performance and behavior during shoots and challenges, not outside of that. It’s unfortunate, but that’s how it was.

Yes. But even more than the contestant, Tyra is the one who should be blamed. Because she created the environment in which such behavior was accepted without any backlash, at all. Most of the girls on this show are very ignorant, young and lacking life experience so I am not at all surprised they should express such views...I am much more bothered by the fact that Tyra did nothing to correct them. She had an opportunity here for intervening and teaching them a valuable lesson. It's not up to Isis to do so, she is in a very vulnerable position as it is, but up to Tyra who is the one in charge and with power. Imagine how powerful it would have been if she had showed these girls how rotten their attitude was...and then yes, by all means, eliminate them if need be.

It's not just a difference in times. Also, a lot of these ended up being teachable moments for those involved and the audience. I learned about Aspberger's for the first time because of Heather. I learned about transgender identity, sexual discrimination, racial issues, and to not judge a book by its cover. I take these lessons with me all the time and I always think about how I learned them from the show, despite all its flaws and issues. Lots of times, when Tyra talked about her personal experiences as a working model, it broke that facade of glamour and perfection that many people have. I don't know if Season 1's Elise is the best example of how badly the show treated people who wanted to pursue higher education. I 100% agree that going to med school is far more practical than a career that usually doesn't last much past 25 or 30! Being a doctor is an incredibly important profession, especially right now. I think people misunderstood how they treated some of the more educated contestants. Elise mocked religious girls, saying that were ignorant for having faith, and described some of the less educated girls as low class trash, so calling her uppity was about more than her educational goals. Frankly, she was a more toxic bully than any of the judges. I think the point they were trying to make was that the show was offering the contestants a chance to get their foot in the fashion door, to use the opportunity to have a career in modeling. That would only work if you were willing to commit a lot of time to it and move to a place where there were more modeling opportunities (like NYC or LA). I never felt like they were shaming people for wanting an education, but rather questioning if giving the opportunity to someone who was only doing it for fun would be a waste.

That “a long time ago” argument only works if ppl DO change. If this show was still going I guarantee Tyra would still do some of the same things. Your “a long time ago” statement can also be used for exploitation. For example, I can do wrong things NOW on purpose and get away with never apologizing for it because it will be history soon right? That’s just irresponsible. Another example. They don’t catch many murder of criminals til years later because you can’t always catch killers within a yr or 2. Even if that person DID change, does that mean they should escape consequences? No. We can forgive others but for the sake of justice, no one should escape consequences. Those killers still go to prison if they’re ever caught. And don’t try to use the”killing is worse so it doesn’t count” thing. There’s only 2 categories: right and wrong. There’s no middle. Thank you for pointing out that the show had the power to bring change to the modeling world, but chose to play into the toxicity. Tyra painting herself as a champion for women intensified that toxicity. That shoot with Keenya and that clip with Yaya still get to me.

Top Model is probably the reason the modeling industry is so much more progressive today. It made them look at how toxic they were. Millennials my age made fun of my gapped teeth all my life. Only in the last few years has it become socially embraced.

My friends used to think I was weird for not liking this show, but I was young and didnt know how to put into words exactly how uncomfortable some episodes made me. I just used to say "I just dont like it for some reason". But they used to say I was weird for not liking it and I started questioning myself. This video makes it so clear why I felt icky about this show, I'm glad other people see the issues too

What's even worst is that a black woman (Tyra Banks) actually pushed for the models to wear black/brownface. When it was used to mock black people in the past.

Danielle’s story always bothered me. Not only did they criticize her for her gap, not only did she only sprain a toe. But during that same season Tyra also criticized her accent and kept telling her that she needed to change her accent because she sounded to “country“ 😕😕

Okay Kaylen found out her friend died in the evening and the grave yard photo shoot was literally first thing in the morning, they can’t come up with a concept/location/wardrobe like that in just a few hours. Plus they told her she didn’t have to do the shoot

If she didn't do it she would be disqualified. Also yes they can do that. They have a lot of influence and a huge budget. Not only that it's not the first time they did something like that to a contestant. They made another contestant pose as a dead girl after her friend died.

Using Robin as an example for the forced nudity doesn't make sense though. In that shoot she exposed her breasts to Jay thinking it was ok since he is gay while Tyra was next to him after claiming to be such a Christian woman. What about the fact Jay didn't ask to be flashed like that? That move of hers made her stance hypocritical.

The hipocresy of the show is way too much. You have Tyra saying beauty comes in all colors, shapes, ages, etc yet the production always make fun of the older, black or full figured models specially during the photoshoots... LIKE COME ON!!!!

Unfortunately, ANTM was the exact reflection of the model industry at that time. It was such an extreme emotional experience to grow up as young woman inside that industry. I'm so happy with the changes in the last years, but I can still see the toxicity in the background.

The one that has bothered me the most was one girl can’t have a career it’s a gap in her teeth. Then one girl has her teeth permanently disfigured for her make over. I bet they polished that floor really good before those girls wore those heels. The rape victim having to kiss a male model. So disgusting. Not good tv, disgusting

It was my favorite show when i was in my 20s but now, it is not. I had learned soooo much that some things are just not worth money but yourself is worth more, like gap in your teeth, being proud to be black, gay, and transgender, choose not to do nude or just being a oversize. Self respect is the hardest thing to do but self-worth is priceless. Thx for posting this, Watchmojo! ❤✌🏾

I actually remember two girls getting eliminated for losing weight and being too thin. Sara fr Cycle 9 got eliminated because she lost weight as a plus sized model, and Anamaria fr Cycle 15 got eliminated for being too thin and was told to eat a burger. But Cassie and Keenyah were chastised for their weight gain. I never knew this was bad as I was a teen when I started watching ANTM. Now I know how toxic this show is

I felt Elyse’s critique so much. My supervisor called me out at work in a similar fashion and speaking approach Tyra had, about the precautions I was doing to make myself safer for the pandemic and it felt hurtful and demeaning. Elyse was such interesting person, I’m glad she found some success post-show, despite the hardships.
