Ian Paice is No. 1 for me. While drummers like Moon were really busy, filling in a lot of sound, Paice's ability to keep swapping his rhythms around really added huge presence to the music. When we listen to Strange Kind of Woman on 22 Carat Purple, we notice the front sound of Gillian and Blackmore dueling. But listen to Paice behind them, changing rhythms, building to a crescendo before exploding the band back into the song. Just brilliant.
