A theory I have heard, and that I believe myself, is actually a crazy one. When I was growing up I don't remember my age or what grade I was in (before middle school for sure) but I remember hearing this theory that Clifford was actually Goliath the giants dog. Since Giants did exist in Biblical times it is believed or rumored that they had bigger animals that probably where actually prehistoric in nature. And times genes and mutations are passed down and could appear later down in the blood line. Clifford's parents of course are normal size so they had normal sized pups. But that either all the babies had it and died due to genetic failure, or Clifford survived because he loved Emily so much and didn't want her to be heart broken. That's why he is so big. Another is that the family that OWNED Clifford's parents where going genetic tests and after many litters failing or possibly dying, overall no success of a giant dog... they just sold the litters. I mean pets die everyday of birth defects and stuff right? Who would question the breeders if their puppy died? So they sell the failed experiments babies to make back their money and if puppies died oh well. But Clifford didn't. Because I remember an episode or a book.... I swear by it. That someone comes up to the family and tells them that they OWN Clifford and try to get him back through legal action. But it ends in either Clifford running away from the douche back to Emily. Or the douche losing the battle and leaving.

Clifford is actually more comparable to Inuyasha than King Kong. A Komainu (a mythological giant Japanese Temple Guard Dog) is technically what he would be considered if he was an anime character lol.
