I did get to visit Russia as a teen. Over the course of a month we hiked a trail outside Nayfeld, visited Kamchatka and Moscow to do some sight-seeing and shopping, and then took a bus to Poland where we got to stay at a resort with various pools for a week. We ended the trip by flying to New York and stayed for Independence Day, enjoying the fireworks from a ferry. It had been an incredible experience and I consider myself fortunate to have been able to do this.

Speaking of giant animals, I live in the state of Virginia in the USA and in my part of the state we have what I've always called, "Mutant crows," because they are freakishly large, even bigger than vultures and other large birds that are also native to the county I live in, especially in my neighborhood and a couple surrounding neighborhoods as well. Have you thought about urban legends in british counties? Im from kent and we famously have the ghost of blue bell hill, but other places like pluckley that has over 15 different ghost stories and satanist stories, the ghost at leeds castle and so mamy more.
