These are the ten novels that have stayed with me the most/stuck in my head, that I continue to think about, years after reading them. While this isn't my top 10 favorite books, I did enjoy all of these and recommend them as strong reads for science fiction fans.

@@FIT2BREAD Absolutely, I got the Hyperion Omnibus because I knew it wasn't a completed story, so very excited to finish it. I will definitely read Speaker for the Dead, although I'm not always the biggest fan of sequels that greatly change from the first so I'll be curious to see what direction it goes.

Another great list, Michael / Kid! Some titles and authors here I have yet to encounter. Was interested that a MZB was on your list - I mostly remember her books as the kind of sword & sorcery books that were easy to get in the 80s. Had no idea that she has a murky story herself... Love that Kindred is on this list, and so interesting to hear your response to reading it. I feel like I've grown up (in mid-forties now) with SF as a genre of the cis-het white male. I've been overjoyed to find authors of colour in the genre, simultaneously raging that it has taken til the 2020s for me to discover them! I'm getting Hyperion from the library tomorrow - I'll finally be able to join in with the Sci Fi Alliance in talking about Simmons!

One of the things that I love about the Vorkosigan series is that they can be read on their own. I haven't read all of them, but the ones that I have work well enough as standalone stories that it almost doesn't really matter where you start or what order you read them in.

i read Bradleys "Saga of the Renunciates" trilogy set in the Darkover World and enjoyed it so much i bought the whole darkover series, then i found out about her life and crimes and haven't picked them up since. separating the art and the artist is something im struggling with on this one. I agree with many of these. One outstanding exception is "Dhalgren". Dhalgren is probably on more lists of DNF'd SF novels than any other book from that era. It was a "notable" book when it was published, so nearly every serious SF fan bought it. Like many others, I dropped it as unreadable, in my case probably 75 pages after I should have given up on it. Good to know that there is a real audience for it, though. My equivalent list would include some of these as well as some part of: The Beastmaster, Star Guard, Pandora's Planet, Tactics of Mistake, Three Hearts and Three Lions, Hammer's Slammers, Starship Troopers, The Forever War, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, The Caves of Steel, On Basilisk Station, and The Gray Lensman. (I wouldn't _recommend_ The Gray Lensman, but I read it at exactly the right time, and it was perfect for me then.) All of those were very influential for me.

Doug, fess up! You know you are just trying to bury me in titles you know I haven't read, ha. Just kidding. I have to give you a hard time for not buying into the gospel of Dhalgren. My lord I love that book. It's one of the few that I desperately want other to love and to experience the way I do..but of course I know that isn't to be. I do have reviews of Caves of Steel and The Forever War on my channel. The Forever War review is pretty recent. Hammer Slammers has been on my radar for a while. Thanks for the comment (and the slander)!

commenting live in order of mention. 1) Love the entire series, and Miles bonding with his "brother" is great, when you learn marks story and it's difference from miles. Miles was a victim of a botched assassination attempt that was an all at once situation leading to difficulty. Mark was tortured to match miles history of malady's. It starts with a nepharious replacement tale, and finishes with a sad tale of a torturned man, who ends up finding the bond with their target or antagonist respectfully. 3) Darkover is a fascinating universe, but there is a lot of disturbing things throughout the series, and after learning what a terrible person she is they made perfect sense. ** Dune and Foundation are legend. 4) Neruomancer is great. Just great. I recomend it to anyone interested in the genre. It's not the first ever, but it's close to, and without a doubt the most significant contributors to the world. 6) I know I read Kindred, and I refuse to not finish a book. I will choose not to finish a series, but not an individual book, and I Know I read it, but it didn't stick with me. 8) Enders Game was written to create the back story for Speaker for The Dead.. Both books are great, and it sticks with you, especially if you read it as a young man, particularly a boy, at the right development to be able to appreciate the various complexities that exist in both books. And Orson largely had a rather bland, yet dense and fulfilling way of writing. The passion was almost sterile, but it was steril for a purpose. No reason to comment on Strange New World. However you feel about it, it doesn't matter, it's so built into the zeitgeist that there is really no way to describe it without interfering with the things that people think they already know, though what they know is faulty. You just have to read it to get it, and what is being described is not the least bit complex, it's all in your face.

I’ll have find Mirror Dance. Don’t think I’ve read it before. I started Caliban (Asimov short story turned into a novel by McBride(?)). I’m liking the ideas but all the characters seem the same. They’re all good at discerning hidden truths from what was spoken or not spoken. The writing seems dated too. Each character is given a description in some way, either through someone else’s eyes or through the characters internal monologue, which seems forced. I don’t look in a mirror and comment upon what I see. Nor do I run through a list of my features and type of intelligence just as I’m about to interview or be interviewed. Feels like a stage play at times. Characters are one dimensional too. No nuance,

Oops. Posted by mistake. But I’m liking one of the concepts such as, is it worthwhile to get rid of a belief if that belief is what makes society function even though they belief is flawed to false? I can see how this plays into religion and there’s even two main groups who could pass for religious people vs non-religious/evangelical atheists complete with the factions who see different ways of achieving their goals. Without bringing in religion and the supernatural the author(s) are still discussing it by proxy.
