I spent 15 minutes trying to figure out an 11th place episode I could live with, before finally just tossing them all out. I think the unofficial 11th place winner is "A Hunka Hunka Burns in Love" but don't quote me on that. (Also, The Blunders Years is pretty good and it is way too overhated by the fanbase.) 😛

I would probably go with "Homer the Moe" for my bubble episode, though I will concede they should definitely cut the trans joke out in future airings. But, I am a sucker for Moe, as he is my favorite Simpsons character of all time. Jims started the retrospective series on January 12, 2019, with the latest upload being March 21, 2022. This means there's 1164 days between whose, or an average of around 89.5 days between episodes. By this rate, Jims will reach the Season 33 retrospective on February 13, 2027, which means the Simpsons will be on its 38th season, so Jims will make a Season 37 retrospective around May 5, 2028.

The atmosphere in The Blunder Years is what makes it so good. Can't lose with those flashback scenes and nightly body searching. I also like the riot jokes in Poppa's got a brand new badge. Also I think the best joke in Half-Decent Proposal is not the Mont Carlmore, but when Lenny says there's nothing for him in that chopter, and then we see Carl calling him. Like Lenny was ready to die, if Carl wouldn't have been there. I am furious (Yellow) would also have been in the first spot on my list. Sweet and sour Marge also has many good jokes like Lenny and Carl arguing in the bar.

If “Poppa’s Got a Brand New Badge” has been the finale episode. The Simpsons it would have been remembered as the greatest TV show of all time. I know a lot of people see Seasons 3-8 as the golden years but if all we had were the first 13 seasons. We would have ended on a high note and wouldn’t be living in a world where the quality degraded over time. Also in that episode Homer lists almost every job he’s had over the 13 seasons. It really would be an outstanding finale.

Due to the retrospective I went back and rewatched the opening of Weekend at Burnsies as I remembered enjoying the "it's a murder" line and damn for a disposable act 1, it's a really bloody excellent top notch disposable act 1. Dare I say if you swapped it into an earlier season ep for say the tramapoline or similar it'd absolutely fit right into the best that the show had to offer. As for the rest of the season that you passed over, I thought the only one that I thought deserved more of a mention was the Lastest Gun in the West as in my eyes it's pretty solid. Maybe there's a case for Brawl in the Family too if only that the swerve of getting an entire episode arc done sneakily quickly to blindside the audience with the return of the Vegas wives is really well done. There's also some good stuff with just how much one of them can't cope with the Flanders home.

Weekend At Burnsie's has always been one of my favorite episodes ever, I was surprised to see it so high up on your list. Also, two random observations: Poppa's Got A Brand New Badge probably has the funniest act one of the whole season. It's weird how the whole plot of Half-Decent Proposal was kinda foreshadowed all the way back in season 4's "The Front".
@camelopardalis84
@camelopardalis84 2 жыл бұрын
Waitwaitwaitwaitwaitwaitwait (and also: Hello again, as we've conversed before): I just watched "The Front". The episode that I can never remember what it is about. The episode I always think is the one with Lisa's braces at first, but that is actually the one where the kids write an Itchy & Scratchy episode under Abe's name and win an award for it. Anyway. _In what way does "The Front" foreshadow "Half-Decent Proposal"?_ I know what its official B-plot is about - to me, it feels more like an episode consisting of two B-plots and no A-plot, not sure why, but I have a theory - but again, in what way does it foreshadow "Half-Decent Proposal"?

Off the back of this countdown, I just watched Brawl In The Family for the first time in years. I wouldn't go so far as to call it "hidden gem" necessarily, however I was surprised to find myself laughing most of the way through. (The wolves and cougars growling together in a huddle killed me so hard I had to pause the video!) Structurally it's a bit messy, but then that's to be expected from this era. The third-act reappearance of the "Vegas wives" is very random, but the two characters make the most of their limited screen time, and the final scene with Lisa commenting how the Simpsons end up victorious by "working together as a family" is a very sweet act 1 call back. This one would definitely make my list of top episodes from this era.

It's great to finally get the list for Season 13. I'm always curious to see what will end up on these lists now that we get into the later seasons where the show isn't consistent like it used to be, but funny how this season had no semi finalists when the last two seasons I think were weaker than this one. I was surprised to see Sweets and Sour Marge on the list when I heard it's critical reception was more mixed to negative, but I know Grift of the Magi was too, and that was in your best of Season 11 list. She of Little Faith, Little Girl in the Big Ten, Jaws Wired Shut, and of course I Am Furious Yellow were ones I expected to be on the list, as I know they are some of the more well received episodes, and it was good to see The Blunder Years and Papa's Got a Brand New Badge on the list since I too have them on my list too. I think one difference is that I would have had The Parent Rap on my list. I don't know if I am alone on that, but I find The Parent Rap one of the more enjoyable episodes from Season 13. It's one of the more consistent episodes in terms of it's actual plot and themes with no real swerves in terms of the story changing from one thing to another, and all the different moments even if they give focus to different characters at points still tie together. It also has a lot of fun moments like Homer and Bart having some bonding moments when they're tethered together, and the moments with Judge Constance Harm are all pretty funny. I don't know if I'm alone on this, but it's just an episode I would have included. Great list as always, and I cannot wait for your Season 14 Retrospective and Top 10.

“Ed O’Neil is… Soccer Mummy” I don’t know how this became one of my favorite Simpsons quotes in high school, but I still laugh at that every time. There’s no punchline really, but I love it. On another note, personally the parent rap and blame it on Lisa are in my top ten of this season.

Same here.. this was the first Simpsons episode I remember watching when it premiered as a kid. I was just mesmerized by it; I taped that episode and constantly rewinded to that Soccer Mummy bit constantly. First ever parody trailer I remember. Plus honestly my first inner meme. Good times. It's honestly still just as hilarious now for it's randomness. It was meant as more of a dig at O'Neil for his constant failures around then but Modern Family killed that part but it still manages to work.

I never even knew Weekend at Burnsie's existed. I loved the simpsons as a kid, I receited entire episodes back to myself for fun when I was bored. Every other episode you've covered so far I remembered instantly. But I never had any videos or dvds or anything and presumably they censored this episode in the UK (at least on the timeslots/channels I was watching). There's plenty of later stuff I never watched, but it's an utterly surreal feeling to discover a 'new' S13 episode was apparently there all along.

The scene of Homer sitting through all the trailers is in my head every time I go to the movies, so that gag certainly had an impact if nothing else. Hard to argue with the top 2 here. Also very much agreed that season 13 is top heavy. Its best episodes feel like they could work as season 9ish episodes.

Stan Lee is so good in Furious Yellow. I don't think they would have gone that direction with him if the episode had been written after the MCU became a thing. Would have portrayed Stan Lee as a superhero himself or something in season 25.

The Parent Rap is one of my favourite episodes of all time. Soooo many good moments. From the introduction of Judge Harm all the way to the Clown is Down is just gold all the way through. It's better than the blunder years in my opinion. Homers screaming is way over the top, I remember my mother (who likes the Simpsons) always changing the channel whenever Homer's 2 minutes of nonstop screaming began.

@@stryke-jn3kv I remember seeing it on Channel 4 around 2006(?) or so, when they had bought the rights from the BBC and were showing “new” (if you lacked Sky) episodes. I had seasons 11-13 all on one VHS tape from those weekly Channel 4 showings. But IIRC those were on Friday nights, unlike their 6pm weekday repeats. Big Brother coverage came after them I think.

But I watched that tape so many times, it was a real surprise seeing the various comments like “I’m in the UK and I’ve never seen that one”. I think Season 13 starts a small renaissance for the show, after the travesty that was Season 11, and the slight improvement that was Season 12. Looking at my list of episodes, it seems we share 8 on this list. However, one of your picks I think is the worst episode of the season, and another is the second worst. With that being said, onto my list: 10. Sweets and Sour Marge - Good idea, flawed execution. It focuses too much on wacky Homer trying to get the sugar back, than focusing on the town and how it's affected without sugar. A worse verson of Homer vs. the Eighteenth Amendment in essence. If the episode more explored its own concept. We get like one scene of kids without energy at school, and it's never re-visited again in the episode. I want to know more about the town, but we just don't get it. 9. Jaws Wired Shut - Great character episode for Homer, and how losing his voice makes him a nicer person who tends to listen more to others than his own voice. What hurts this episode is the out of nowhere final act, which I don't care for, and wasn't built up in the slightest. I like the idea with Marge's character that she gets bored of the monotony in her life and sometimes wants to spice things up, that's what the Springfield Connection did so well. But this, just doesn't work. 8. Poppa's Got a Brand New Badge - I think this one is overrated. For some reason I remembered more happening in this episode and I got many of its scenes confused with those out of the Season 20 episode where Homer becomes a bounty hunter. Anyway, I liked Homer's ad, but the Fat Tony stuff just ended up being an inferior version of Mayored to the Mob for me. 7. Little Girl in the Big Ten - Suspending my disbelief, this is a good episode. Also Bart has to social distance to protect others from a Chinese virus he had. Did this episode predict the corona? 6. Tales from the Public Domain - Honestly in these seasons, some of these kinds of episodes were quite good. I hate the modern ones, but here they get good jokes out of the settings. I'd say I prefer Simpsons Bible Stories, but this is a close second. 5. The Blunder Years - Scully's last episode as showrunner, and he goes out on a high note. I do like this episode. 4. She of Little Faith - Does feel like a lesser Lisa the Vegetarian in some regards, but it's Al Jean's first episode as showrunner, and you can see a significant improvement in joke delivery and character writing. 3. I am Furious (Yellow) - Gotta agree here. The early internet stuff is on point. 2. Treehouse of Horror XII - I thought two of the segments were mediocre, but I downright loved the House of Whacks segment. Probably the best post-Golden Era TOH segment, and that's what pulls this episode right up the order. 1. Weekend at Burnsies - Simple premise, great execution. The best episodes of thoe show have simple premises. How much mileage can we get from "Homer gets high", Well, they made it work. I didn't like The Bart Wants What it Wants, or Half Decent Proposal. I find Greta Wolfcastle such a boring nothing character, and the love triangle between Bart, her and Milhouse is just boring. We've had jokes about 10 year old boy doesn't understand relationships before, and they were done much better then. And then Canada is a bunch of stereotypes about the place they're going to, my least favourite cliche of the show. Half Decent Proposal is fine until Homer breaks character in the stupidest way possible so they can get the climax at the oil rig. He just abandons his kids and gets a "death job". I'm a person who most strongly values character writing, so I can't like this episode with a character break that big.

To be honest, season 13 felt like a step down from season 12. However, the general highs here are better than that of season 12 (except HOMR) but the lows though, are really bad. My personal favorite from the season is Jaws Wired Shut followed closely by I Am a Furious (Yellow) with my least favorite being Brawl in the Family. Btw, great list. Finally, I see someone who actually hates The Bart Wants What It Wants. The whole love triangle drama between Milhouse, Bart and Greta from the middle of the episode was executed poorly. It made both Bart and Milhouse very unlikable. Also, Lisa holding onto the gates at the private school took way too long and the Canada part had so much potential. I actually put that episode on my bottom 10 episodes for the season.
