You could argue that his strategy in the second game was flawed. He knew what was coming but nevertheless risked the life of all his teammates. Of course you could justify this by saying he wanted to get rid of Il-nam (no benefit from him) and Gi-Hun (great threat as sang woo knew he was good at most games) but if he wanted gi-hun to die he could have simply let him die in the first game (instead of encouraging him to finish the game)

@lucidjar3 жыл бұрын
@@Richardlizhu Eh, not really. Such was the nature of his character development and redemption arc. The game is such that there must almost certainly be a winner; whoever won is the main character. Plot armor makes no sense to invoke here and them killing each other at the end would have been dull. Many characters are sufficiently well developed that the winner is in a sense arbitrary. Had they won, the story would have followed them instead and the show's core, a meditation on the human condition would have remained intact. --- Imagine a game where 450 players have to correctly guess 6 coin tosses and each toss is dressed as a death game. Having at least one (or even 3-4) winners would not be surprising. Follow the path of the first loser and the show is over right away. Pick any other character but the final one and you're left with loose ends. Ergo we're constrained to follow whoever won, whether by luck or skill. Notice: following the story of whoever won and calling their guessing all tosses correctly plot armor would clearly be a strange complaint to make.

Another smart choice was Gi-Hun declining the Math teacher's offer to team up before they played marbles! By the next game (Glass Bridge of Death) we learn two things: the Math teacher defeated his marbles opponent, while Gi-Hun basically lost his game and needed old man IL-Nam to pretend he was losing his mind to help Gi-hun "manipulate" the old man to spark his comeback. In short, Gi-hun stood no chance in a game of numbers against the Math teacher, who proved brilliant with probabilities in the Glass Bridge game, and he had no relationship with Gi-Hun, no reason to spare him or sacrifice himself for him.

@@archipelagoose6137 I don't know, the math teacher seemed to love solving his problems by taking his odds into account. He probably realized at some point that each game was geared towards cutting the numbers in half and guessed that the next game was gonna have a similar objective. He has probably observed Gi-hun, who wasn't overly smart or educated but was lucky enough as well as a good team player, and thought that he was a weaker player as an individual who made it so far on luck and could use some of that luck if they had to work together but was also someone he had a definite advantage over if they had to play against each other. A deep-thinker like him would probably take a lot of things into account before singling out Gi-hun as his partner, he could both use his good luck and team play skills but prey on him if he needed to. Gi-hun was smart to reject someone he didn't know in favor of taking his chances with someone he knew had his back like IL Nam. He took pity on him but also knew the old man had his back and still had plenty to offer as long as it wasn't a strength/endurance-related game. I think it’s interesting how through out the show, no matter the situation, it is shown that Gi-Hun always has this whole “last minute” win situation. First we see that with the credit card where he gets all of his attempts at the PIN wrong, but he gets his last chance right. Then at the Horse race, he wins the very last game. Red Light, Green Light, he wins at the last second. Same goes for the Honeycomb, last second. Tug of War, being in the front, right when he’s about to fall to his death, he is pulled back and wins. For the fourth game, he makes the last minute decision to team up with Il Nam who chooses to let him win right when the timer is about to end. The Fifth Game, he is about to pick number 1, when is stopped by the other contender who he gives the number to, and then also reaches on the platform at the last second.The sixth game, he chooses to stop the game, which also meant letting go of the money, but Sang-Woo stabs himself at the very end making Gi-Hun win all the money. Then he meets Il Nam and makes a bet about the homeless guy who is rescued right before the clock strikes midnight. And then the last scene of the show where he’s about to board the plane but stops due to the call and heads back.

@@kaidestinyz I fucking hate people who said "kAiJi iS bEttEr!!!" Or "kaIJi hAs BeTtEr GaMeS". These people clearly have not watched the show with their eyes wide-opened and only taken everything simply at face value. Just to get off my chest, yes, Kaiji is better when it comes to the types of games that the contestants play, but when it comes to the exploration of human nature when put in extreme duress, Squid Game prevails. Look at the protagonist of Kaiji, he is barely memorable other than the fact that he is observant and has critical thinking. The characters in Squid Game, on the other hand, act a lot more accordingly to real humans, and whenever someone is killed off, you can't help but feel for them. The games are so simplistic yet so intriguing. The best example is the marble game. IN this game alone, we know 3 things: Sacrifice, betrayal, and friendship. First of, sacrifice: When player 067 converses with her competitor, she explained the reason why she joined the game which was to get money to bring her mom from North Korea to South Korea so that her family could be reunited. Her competitor (I don't remember her name nor her number), on the other hand, had no primary goals when she finished the game since her family was all gone and thus when the two decided to compete, 067's contestant gave up her marbles willingly and sacrificed herself by claiming that she (067) still had purposes and reasons to move on. The scene was extremely impactful despite the fact that 067's competitor was introduced as a mild character who only got limited screen time. Does Kaiji have sacrifice? Kinda. For example, when the protagonist realized that the old man still had one last card but time had run out, he decided to go with him instead, which was noble to an extent but ultimately a stupid choice. If he actually cared about the old man, he should have taken full responsibility of the card instead of having the both of them be sent to labour camp so that at least one would be able to walk free and all the efforts wouldn't go to waste. Pretty imbecile for a guy who was supposed to be smart and observant. Second, betrayal: Ali and Sang Woo. Before we talk about them, let's talk about the events that lead up to them being pairing up since it is an important segue. When the contestants voted to leave the game, Sang Woo and Ali got thrown into a random location. Sang Woo, despite the fact that he was cash-strapped himself, decided to give some of his money to Ali for him to buy food and a bus ride home and lent him his phone. Yes, Sang Woo may do this not because he felt pity for Ali and more of "I'm a businessman and thus way much more superior than this working-class illegal immigrant so it is my best interest to help him", but at the end of the day, not everybody would be so willing to give up their money particularly when they are in a dire financial situation. Another important scene is when Sang Woo and Ali had major character development. Each of them talked about their personal lives and shared bitterness and sweetness with one another. So much so that a bond grew between them. You may not know but Ali called him "Hyung" which is roughly translated to "older brother". Because of this, when Ali called out for Sang Woo as "Hyung" when he couldn't locate him, the scene of him realizing that he had been betrayed by the same person that had helped him and whom he trusted was much more impactful and heartbreaking. Does Kaiji have this? No, it was just your typical "protagonist is smart" stereotype. Now, let's talk about the ending. When Gi Hun (the protagonist) won and went back to the world, he suffered from trauma, guilt and PTSD. He realized when he won, all the money that he won was ultimately all for nothing: His best friend, Sang Woo, was killed, his mother who had diabeetus died alone in her house no doubt waiting for her son to come home, and his daughter had gone to the US without him getting to say his final goodbye. This is extremely pivotal as it displayed a realistic broken man. Gi Hun may have won the money, but he lost everything and everyone that he loved and held dearly to. What about Kaiji? Well, there is none. The main protagonist, after winning the game, went out to party with the loan shark as if nothing traumatizing had ever happened. And when his loan shark stole all of his money and erased his debt, he simply went on with his life. I mean, what about the old man that made as a friend? Well, I doubt he even recollects him the moment he stepped foot back into the world. Hell, I doubt he felt any guilt for the old man. At least when Gi Hun reformed himself and put his life back together, his first priorities were to help his best friend's mother and help 067's brother and give them large amounts of money and bring the brother to Sang Woo's mother so that they could fill the gaps in one another: Sang Woo's mom now have a son-like figure whilst 067's brother has a mother or grandma figure. It is a bittersweet ending. Kaiji, despite having cool concepts and games and a smart protagonist, is still very much bland and uninspiring. The movie is just your typical and stereotypical movie of how the protagonists solve everything by themselves with barely any difficulties and barely any help from the other contestants. And whoever someone dies, I barely give a shit. Squid game, despite having simple children games, they're only served as a catalyst to delve deep into human nature and the capitalist society. And whever someone dies, it feels likfe a punch in the guts.

The thing about the sitting technique is that there was definitely enough room for them to try it and make it across safely, the rules only said that you had to jump to one of the tiles, not that you couldn’t test them out before hand. The last one was my favourite. Gi-Hun's story becomes so tragic. His mum dies, his friend/s dies as well as finding out the person he trusted turned out to be a sicko. And ffs, he can even see his daughter because of the position he's in. It's almost like he was destined to never have a happy ending. Because in the end, even if he got out of The Squid Game, he'd always be looking over his shoulder knowing the mastermind behind the games will always be keeping tabs on him. Poor Gi-Hun.

player 1, the old man, playing up his senality to mess with Gi-hun in the marble game was pretty clever. So was playing it up before the game started so no one wanted to play with him. He musthave known that the player who wasn't picked would be sent back to the room they were kept in, he made the games after all. So if Gi-Hun hadn't picked him he would be fine as well.The only reason he 'lost' that game was bcause he chose to give Gi-Hun his last marble, because it was more fun for him that way.

The Smartest move anyone could make would be to be the one who organized the game. That way you can do things like... Oh, I don't know... ... Make sure you are never targeted to get shot... Call in the pink suits to stop players from killing each other... Make sure you aren't dragged to your death in a game of tug of war by making your locks "magically disappear..." And knowing that if you are the odd person out, you can have the means to leave the game without anyone realizing it... It's fun to rewatch this series and see all the small things you missed.

@@mas8705 Do you honestly think he would have still had enough reaction time to quickly undo the cuffs (yes, we know that his shackles weren’t individually locked like the others on the team, but he was still cuffed to to the rope) if his team went over the edge in tug of war? I mean, you’re talking only maybe 2-3 seconds from when the first player goes over the edge to when the last player goes over it. I don’t think the old man would have had the reaction time to quickly undo his cuffs while he’s simultaneously being pulled forward by the players already dangling over the edge in front of him and being pushed forward by the players behind him. I just don’t see him being able to move that fast when they are quickly going down.

I disagree with standing behind the other players being smart. Ofcourse, it was supposed to be cuz it is a show but in reality it is very much possible that if the person in front of you messes up, you could either a) flinch b) they could fall on you c) it's possible for bullets to actually go through bodies, so you could also be eliminated for another person's mistake. But I mean it worked out plot wise so sure I guess. Also about the coin toss, just choosing offense itself was very dumb since doing "Inspector Royal" when the other player has a fricking knife is nearly impossible unless you catch them off guard with the sand.
