Love Reign O'Er Me.What a song that is,always grabs me and keeps me. Saw them at the legendary Isle of Wight fest in '70 and as usual, they blew me and everyone who was there away. I keep on about their cameo at The Concert for New York but it really is fantastic, sadly blocked on YT but available on the CFNY dvd.

Fully agreed. I'm never able to get fully into the studio albums. Who's Next does nothing for me. But those live shows... WOW! Shows they're talents much more. Live At Leeds is the perfect example: Entwistle's bass in loud and clear like the sound of thunder, Moon is doing all kinds of apeshit drum fills, Pete's guitar tone is amazing, and Daltrey screams up a storm as Pete would say.

Great list, Pete! Love your honorable mentions, too. I was going to say Boris the Spider for honorable mention, if you didn't, ha, ha, so you're right on, as usual. My very first big time rock concert was The Who, December 2, 1971 in Memorial Coliseum, Dallas, TX. I was 16 years old. This was the Who's Next Tour and Pete wore a spacesuit. We watched the concert through a thick haze of pot smoke and got to partake because at that time, hippies would roll continuously and pass joints down entire rows of seats. The cops did nothing. There was a wall of gigantic amp speakers behind the band (similar to AC/DC) so like, it was LOUD, and there were stage to ceiling scaffolded walls of car headlights surrounding the band and pointing at the audience, however they remained off until the first of two encores, when they did See Me, Feel Me / Listening to You. So building up to a climax of their most powerful sound, they go into Listening to You and the first time Daltry belts out "You" at that exact moment, all the car headlights come on simultaneously. The crowd orgasmically roars and we're all blinded by the light. They came back for a second encore, did My Generation, and proceeded to demolish all their instruments, amps, and the drum set and yeah, they tossed pieces of gear into the audience. Those were the days!

Nice list Pete. I love the fact you included Naked Eye and Young Man Blues in there. I couldn't have left My Generation, Behind Blue Eyes, and I Can See For Miles out, but as you said, there are so many great tunes by the Who that its extremely difficult to limit a list to just 10 songs. This list is one you could have done like you did Alice Cooper with a top 5 classics and then 10 more deep cuts. I really liked that format because it allows you to include great songs that you're burned out on like Won't Get Fooled Again and Baba O'Reilly while including songs like Sparks and Heaven and Hell. BTW, although I haven't written for publication outside of a few articles for my local newspaper back in the day, I do like to write and am passionate about music, with a wide and eclectic range of genres that I love and collect dating back to the sixties, particularly hard rock, progressive rock, fusion, blues, jazz, funk, reggae, and southern rock. For the most part I dig metal but my breadth of knowledge isn't as deep as some other genres. Let me know if I can help.

Cry If You Want is another gem! It was great when The Who brought back that song on the 2007 tour!

No mention of Let’s See Action? Never appeared on an album but it’s a banger. Love Quadrophenia, would probably make up half of my top ten. Much prefer it over Tommy but Who’s Next runs it close

Recently, what's left of The Who (Daltrey and Townshend) showed that they could still produce interesting music, with their "Endless Wire." The Who was the quintessencial rock band, more than the Stones. The group was always about great sound, loud music, even louder lyrics. As Daltrey said himself once: Rock is about having a good time ✌️🤟🤘

As much as I love the Beatles and their backing vocals, and though they were clearly superior in that dept to the Stones, the Kinks and the Who, I just love the Stones, the Kinks and Who when it comes to the way they did backing vocals in the 60s in particular. Each were great examples of how, in compensating for their deficiencies, they came up with something more interesting than the experts and the soulsters some of the time.
