If I recall correctly at the time, there were a few reasons people believed it was either staged or her fault. Right after the incident, MTV CEO Tom Freston stated in an interview that it was staged by Jackson as a stunt. It was later elaborated that MTV staff come up with the idea and that Jackson was supposed to be wearing a red-lace bra underneath. The story goes that her bra "collapsed" during the performance and her breast was exposed. Jackson also gave a statement that said "My decision to change the Super Bowl performance was made after the final rehearsal. MTV, CBS, [and] the NFL had no knowledge of this whatsoever and unfortunately, the whole thing went wrong in the end. I am really sorry if I offended anyone, that was truly not my intention." It made it sound like she saying that it was her decision to change the show without telling anyone, and was her mistake. That's part of the reason people didn't blame Timberlake as much. As for why she got more blame, first, when her top was ripped off, she was wearing what appeared to be pasties over her nipples. People argued that why was she wearing those if there was supposed to be bra on and they weren't meant to be seen? Second, when her new album came out, she was topless on the cover (albeit with her back turned). I remember some newscasters at the time stating that they believed it was an accident until that came out, because it looked like she did this to drum up interest for her album. Third, she went on the David Letterman show a little after the incident, wore something very revealing, and when Letterman started pressing her about the incident she eventually cursed and had to be censored, which people took to mean that she didn't have a good answer, meaning it was set up. I'm not saying it wasn't also due to misogyny or racism. I'm just saying it wasn't as clear cut and dry as people looking back on it today make it look. Now, we hardly care, saying what damage did seeing her breast do to anyone? At the time, the country was more conservative than it is now.

For the same reason as when a woman gets raped, to some people it's still her fault. Historically among a.. conservative set, women are held to a much higher moral standard. Men are expect to "sow their oats," but an unmarried woman having sex -- horrors.

I agree, but O'connor is an iridh woman. The republic of ireland is still a Catholic country, the religion still has a hold on the country it even controls the education system of the country. The crazy thing about the Milli Vanilli "scandal" is that I remember when their first song came out, I saw a report on some TV entertainment show (possibly "Entertainment Tonight", but I don't remember for sure which show it was) about the fact that the guys on the album cover and in the video weren't the ones actually performing the song and that they'd just been hired by the record label to give the band a "better image". Then fast-forward a few years, when the lip-sync thing happened and it was like everyone had completely forgotten that it had already been publicly stated, years earlier, that they weren't the ones doing the singing.

Come on, now. It's safe to say a woman doesn't wear a tear-away top and pasties unless she's planning to lose her top. And, before and since, Justin Timberlake is not known for randomly ripping off woman's tops during a performance (I can't speak to his private time). It was and is, obviously, part of the show that they didn't get cleared, first. The attempted cover-up (absolutely no pun intended) by both singers and their camps was pathetic and showed just how little they think of the general population's intelligence. I agree with Derric, though, that it was BS that everyone made such a big deal about it. It was a nothing part of the show.

@austinswanson
@austinswanson 4 жыл бұрын
@@cnett486 No you definitely don't. That sound comes from making the pitch 100% perfect and in the process taking out any vibrato or pitch wavering at the end of notes. Since no one sings 100% perfectly on tune, thats more than enough for Auto-Tune to work; you can sing completely normally and get that auto-tune effect with programs like Antares Auto-Tune and Waves Tune. I think what you guys are attributing to Auto-Tune you ACTUALLY mean to attribute to pitch correction, which is the individual movement of notes into the correct pitch through use of a program like Melodyne. The distinction is that Auto-Tune is a algorithm and done broadly to a whole vocal recording where pitch correction is done to each individual note... so when using Auto-Tune you have to be within range of the tonal center of the note you want, but with pitch correction you could sing everything completely wrong and still move the notes to the right places (kinda).

@Trius well that was the pull,I remember when she was first live on TV on the late late show and it was the shaved head that had people watching...Bottom line is ":Nothing Compares to you"" was...and still is a classic even though it was written by Prince and he wanted it sang differently but as an Irish Roman Catholic I can tell you she was never forgiven for ripping up the picture of Pope John Paul the 2nd,and one of the main reasons was he came to Dublin and over a million people turned out to see him in the phoenix park just afew years before and he was probably the last great pope

The sad thing with the Natalie Kills and Willy Moon situation is that I remember the guy who got humiliated by them admit in an interview a year after that happen he was still bother by what happened and thought of it nearly everyday. I think he had also admitted to being bothered by his contracts and success because he wasn’t sure if it was out of pity or because he was that skilled. All I got say about those two is fuck them and it’s good they lost their fame. People like them get too huge egos with just a little bit of fame.

Here’s the problem (and I 100% support what she was trying to do): she didn’t explain what she was doing at all. The sex abuse scandal through the church was basically unknown to the wider world at that point, so to the audience it looked like she just ripped up a photo of a, at the time, beloved pope.

@WarriorCrimson plus in Islam, to get married both parties need to attain puberty so it doesn't mean that once you hit 10 you can get married. Stop spreading distorting views. Muslims are suffering enough already bc all of the lies that were made against them. It is just so sad when people keep talking what they believe when it's not the actual truth

Attacking/bullying someone so viciously for simply wearing a suit and rocking perhaps the most generic guy-haircut there is just blown my mind, I bet there were at least 20 other people in the audience who also wore a suit and had that haircut, the two suits were completely different anyways lmao.
