Isshin was not using his shikai with his fight with aizen to be very clear , he was only his regular engetsu in his sealed form with some kido spells..... The only time he revealed his shikai was with his fight against hollow white..... It is theorized that he cannot use his bankai when he is injured after battle .... And his shikai is a flame type zanpakuto which also uses his blood to boost his fire power .....and theoretically his bankai should act in a way that it uses both his blood and spiritual pressure which would give him massive fire boost but the effects of maintening the bankai would put a heavy toll on his body , so that's why he probably wasn't using his bankai in any of the arcs

Shinsui bankai maybe not most powerful but if it is used against the most powerful bankai then it will fail because it allow the user to manipulate the opponents to play according to the user rules . If they didn't then they will be killed by the shadows . Throughout it can make any childlish game into reality.
