This movie made me cry, I felt so proud as a Dominican that was born in NYC and was raised in DR. Seeing myself represented on screen (regardless of some details being a bit off in the film) and seeing Latin culture all over was amazing. Made me very proud.

The clave rhythm is not borrowed from "America." Clave rhythm is a cornerstone of many Latin musical styles, which Bernstein also borrowed from for West Side Story. Miranda borrowed it from the source.

Yes!!!!!
@maipe69173 жыл бұрын
I came to the comments just to write this myself. It’s so annoying to hear Lin’s use of the clave being called borrowing from Bernstein and “America.” Especially because in “America” Bernstein started with the clave, the rhythm that is that is key to salsa, rhumba and other Caribbean Latin music and then switched to more Mexican rhythms for the rest of the song.

Wish they'd mentioned that in addition to it being a little bonus nugget, "You'll Be Back" is a fun bit of exposition for Nina as Kevin is calling about her tuition... Stanford is subtly saying she'll be back!

The clave rhythm 3-2 is a staple of Latin music. It is west Side Story that borrowed from the culture. Sondheim did not invent it. Come on now MsMojo!
@toniannerobinson7433 жыл бұрын
You are right…Sondheim didn’t invent it; neither did Bernstein. Sondheim was the lyricist on WEST SIDE STORY not the composer.

When we heard You’ll Be Back in the movie me and my entire family freaked out. Some of us didn’t get it at first but once we all got it it was awesome. I LOVED Christopher and Lin’s competing scene! It was awesome. All the cameos from other actors (and Lin’s parents) were so cool as well. And a whole lot of the movie was giving me West Side Story vibes 😂😂 All I’m learning in this video (and from many other things) is that Lin Manuel Miranda is such a clever, awesome, genius!!

One that lyrics change, you forgot to mention was the club scene. On Broadway Nina and Benny get into a fight and try to avoid eachother because mr Rosario fired him at the same time the bodago gets trashed, in the movie Usnavi and Vanessa get into a fight because Usnavi wouldn’t dance with her and goes straight to aubuella song.
@TheSouprGrrl3 жыл бұрын
You've probably already gotten mad heat about this but the clave rhythm was not “borrowed“ from Leonard Bernstein, Leonard Bernstein “borrowed“ the son clave 3-2 rhythm from afro-Cuban music. There are two clave patterns, 3-2 or 2-3. Bernstein and Miranda both use the son 3-2 pattern.

One big detail overlooked by many, is the absence of GOYA products in the Bodega. GOYA was/is a top food staple for Latinos. Yet, when the CEO openly endorsed Trump, many Latinos boycotted the products. The ill feelings were exacerbated when Ivanka Trump pandered and posed with a can of GOYA beans. It was so obvious what she was doing and it offended many. Yet, GOYA continues to be on the shelves of many Bodegas, just not in Usnavi's.
