My favorite part about Mario RPGs is that most of the species of Mario enemies (Goombas, Koopa Troopas, Boos, etc.) are civilized outside of Bowser's Army and shared the same neighbourhood with the Toads and Yoshis, especially for the first two Paper Mario games.

Mario + Rabbids is a lot more fun if you approach it as a tactics game rather than an RPG. I don't think it was ever meant to be an RPG, and it weirds me out that it's lumped in as an RPG. It has some RPG elements, but if you're expecting a full blown RPG - you're going to be very, very disappointed.
@darkdragonmedeus70517 күн бұрын
Lots of people often call it "A poor man's version of Fire Emblem." Which it's both an RPG and a turned based strategy yes, but that's where the similarities end. Fire Emblem is more 2D gameplay, and plays on a Chesslike grid. The Mario + Rabbids series is more 3D and dimensions are closer to following real world standards such as using meters instead of square panels for movement and range stuff. It has more in common with Xcom; or even Baldur's Gate 3 (Combat wise, not all the other D&D stuff) than it does Fire Emblem

You do the Gamecube TTYD a disservice. The gamecube vession is arguably much better because of battle FPS, faster loading times, an actually good Power Bounce Badge and so on... Plus, Bowser's Inside Story is kinda better in a few ways than Partners in Time. If you want a cheap copy of any of these retro games... good luck as well.
@Miccat8718 күн бұрын
Eh... I don't really agree. I get that people will have their preferred version of TTYD, but saying the original is "much better" seems like a stretch, especially since a lot of the stuff you brought up is pretty minor compared to all the ways the remake improved the game, such as a greatly improved presentation, some brand-new boss fights, reducing the excessive backtracking sections, and allowing you to quickly retry battles so you don't have to rewatch long cutscenes that you already saw. I feel like saying the Gamecube version is "much better" just because of some minor things you don't like is doing the remake a disservice. Also, Power Bounce is still very good. I would know as someone who challenge runs both versions regularly. You just need to spend some time practicing it to get more used to how it was changed.
@superstar7playes30318 күн бұрын
@ Thank you for your detailed reply. The key word I used was “arguably”, as in not necessarily. Yes, I find the presentation very charming (music included), adding new bosses was great, and I am very relieved that they fixed the backtracking. However, (this is just me) I find the pace of the battles and adjusted superguard timing very annoying and tedious the play with. Not to mention the Vivian controversy, which I would rather been left like the American version but whatever, they were under pressure I guess. Anyway, nice chatting with you 👍
@RosieUniverseKitten18 күн бұрын
The way I see it is that for experienced players and challenge runners the GameCube version is better due to the better battle UI, but for people just playing a game to play a game the switch version is nice because of all its extra features

@Miccat8718 күн бұрын
Thing is, it's not just about the criticisms you have. It's also about the good stuff the game has to offer. While Brothership has its issues, I honestly think that in certain ways, it exceeds the games that came before it. I imagine that could be why it was placed higher on this list.

I'm sorry I'm the one saying this but...... Super Paper Mario's only amazing aspect is the story and the characters. Gameplay wise is the second worst one, only beaten by Sticker Star, I can't believe how boring its to play, is a side scroller with one cool feature that never gets expanded on, with no power ups, and too easy, even for Paper Mario standarts. Also, Bowser Inside Story on 8th place is kinda wild........ But hey, its your opinion.
@elplaceholder17 күн бұрын
What do you mean??? The music is fire and the art style is insanely creative with its use of geometric shapes
@Gabi-dd7bq17 күн бұрын
@ Sure, the music is pretty good and the art style is unique, just like in most of the other Paper Mario games, but the only outstanding department which makes the game as memorable and special as it is for many is the characters and story. And tbh, I could stand a game with bad music or bad art style, but messing up the gameplay is a real killer.
@kumaranrvn571615 күн бұрын
Paper Mario games have always had pretty boring gameplay that gets repetitive after the first chapter. They introduce all the mechanics early on, and you do the same exact thing for the rest of the game. At least Super Paper Mario’s gameplay is more unique and interesting. The flipping mechanic was used pretty well. Even if it has issues like difficulty balancing, it its not fundamentally flawed like all the later Paper Mario games. I think the Mario and Luigi games handle turn based combat better.
@Gabi-dd7bq15 күн бұрын
@@kumaranrvn5716 I lowkey disagree since combat based turns are already way varied with the different types of enemies and ways to defeat them, next to the partners and new attacks you unlock. Super Paper Mario always felt for me like a worse New Super Mario Bros, too easy, with no power ups, and the same 2D-3D concept. The story is wild, but I’m sure as hell if it wasn’t because of it, and it’s characters, SPM would easily be considered to be even worse than Color Spash or Origami King. The gameplay is unique? Yeah I guess it is, but then again, so was the sticker system in Sticker Star and it wasn’t precisely fun.
@kumaranrvn571614 күн бұрын
@@Gabi-dd7bq All enemies in older games boil down to jump or hammer. Jump on flying enemies and hammer spiked enemies. You get partners in the same way you get new characters/Pixls in Super Paper Mario. Super Paper Mario is less of a platformer and more of an action RPG. The point is to fight enemies to level up. You can choose different characters/Pixls and buy items to get stronger. The platforming is just a way of exploring the worlds. The game has power ups, but they’re clearly not going to be the same as a normal platformer. Again, people wouldn’t think Super Paper Mario is worse than later games because it isn’t fundamentally flawed like them. At least Super Paper Mario has customization and gives you EXP for fighting enemies. Most people enjoy the gameplay and at worst consider it passable. Games like Color Splash and Origami King have no EXP, use consumable attacks, and generally force you to use one solution to fight enemies/bosses. I haven’t seen anyone say they like the gameplay. Don’t see any reason why Super Paper Mario would be considered worse. The only issue with the game without making unfair comparisons would be the difficulty balancing. The sticker system wasn’t unique. It was just consumable attacks, nothing special. The paint system in Color Splash was somewhat unique because it’s used to paint the world and makes attacks stronger. I would have enjoyed the gameplay if it wasn’t for all the other issues I mentioned earlier. Same with Origami King.

My love/hate for all of your picks: (SPOILERS) Paper Mario: The Origami King: NICE START! I’m glad you put this one on the list, I find it to be really underrated! Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle: SHUT UP! MARIO + RABBIDS ISN’T AN RPG! Aside from the turn based system, it’s nothing like an RPG! It’s deserving of its own genre! I didn’t even watch its segment yet and you’re just wrong! Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story: Nice pick! Everyone knows Bowser’s Inside Story is the greatest! Super Paper Mario: Uhhhhh… Ok, tbh, I feel like you shouldn’t have had this one on the list. Who cares about the level up system, because the gameplay itself, which is defines what genre a game is, is nothing like an RPG. Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga: Nice pick again! I’ve never played Superstar Saga, but I’ve heard lots of great things about it, so it’s probably deserving of a spot here! Mario & Luigi: Brothership: Ok, tbh, I haven’t played Brothership yet and didn’t watch its segment for spoiler reasons, but I’m glad it’s being recognized here! Only makes me more hyped to get it for this Christmas! Paper Mario 64: Like Superstar Saga, I’ve never played this one either, but again have heard good things about it, so good pick! Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time: This is another one I’ve never played before, but this time I’ve only heard mixed things about it, soooo… number 3? Idk… Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door: Another game I’ve never played, but have only heard good things about! Nice pick! Super Mario RPG: I fully agree with this pick as #1. It’s not truly my favourite Mario RPG, but as a teen in 2024 who only knew of the game when the Switch one happened, I wish I knew about it while it was exclusive to the SNES! I love it to death, so I’m glad you put it as your favourite! So in total, I hated three out of your ten picks, which is pretty good! Great vid overall! Also, I can tell you’re still sick, so rest up, take it easy, and hope you’re better soon!
